Chapter 38: The discussion 1

The senate room environment sounds serious, with the sound of a group of people explaining things to the crowd, with the leader of the group stood in front of the big table. He is sitting while he explains the image shown on the white screen.

Dressed in a white lab coat, the leader explains himself as Dr. Jeffery Smith.

The other teammate sits on the audience seats when the leader presenting his findings. They are a group of people that NASA entrusted to develop a plan for an emergency deployment of commoners to space.

"As I was saying before, we have run several algorithms to predict what is happening around the earth. From the calculations, we can conclude that the Earth's core is experiencing some changes in pressure. The recent Toba volcano eruption, and as well as the San Andreas Fault collapsing,.. and the signs, given out from all of the volcanoes around the world, it can only mean that the core is trying to reduce its pressure.

"The pressure released will cause the tectonic plate to make major movements and this movement will result in earthquakes with unimaginable magnitude.

"The movement of the tectonic plates also will cause the magma inside the volcanoes to be triggered, and that explains why we are experiencing this unexplainable earthquakes in the past 6 months. The San Andreas Fault is the midpoint of two tectonic plates, and when it collapsed, the series of earthquakes that we are experiencing right now is just a minor effect, because it is only involving 2 tectonic plates. But what if, all the tectonic plates shifting together?

"If my calculation is correct, the movements of the plates will become more drastic in the next 2 months. In two months, the vigorous movement of the plates will result in the eruption of every volcano in the world."

Once Jeff said the last point of his presentation, sounds of murmur from the interpreter started to interpret Jeff's words to all of the leaders.

For the people who understand English, they already started to feel agitated and started to shouts in protest to Jeff.

"Why are you guys only telling us now? Don't you know how many countries have been affected by the sudden earthquakes? Do you know how many lives have gone? It's fucking 150 million of lives you asshole!!!"

Pointing his hand at Jeff, he said again, " If you guys are quick enough to do your work, those people could still survive. We could relocate them to the area that is not susceptible to quakes." Feeling helpless, the middle-aged leader slumps in his seat after he delivers his train of thought.

Looking at the dejected face of the leader, Jeff stood up, and he bowed 90 degrees to all the people in the Senate room.

The room suddenly turned quiet once they saw Jeff suddenly bowed to them.

"I, as a team leader of the Seismologic Department of USGS feels that it is my duty to protect the people, but due to the restrictions of my knowledge and ability, we cannot predict when, where, or how big the incoming disaster would occur. And thus, I am afraid, due to my team and I lack the knowledge to give out the prediction, I feel that those 150 million lives lost, are part of my responsibility. too, I am sorry." Jeff kept bowing his head in the 90 degrees position as he made his apology.

Jeff has been feeling awful, ever since the disaster strikes one by one all around the world. This time around, Jeff did not lie, when he said that he is partly to blame, he meant it. The sensors and probes are part of his duty, to monitor and ensuring that people will have an appropriate time to run and seek shelter, before the disaster strikes. Unfortunately, he did not receive any report on the incoming disaster, the probes and sensors were malfunction without him knowing, thus, resulting in numerous death all around the world.

The earthquakes and tsunamis happen every single day in the past 6 months. Many cities are gone, islands were wiped away, and the peoples are gone too. The world is in a critical situation.

"Please, I beg all of you. Unite, just this once to protect the people. We can do the blame game after all of this has passed. The continuity of humankind can only be achieved if we think of a solution together. I have the NASA research team here to suggest some ways to solve the issue. If you all are willing to listen and cooperate, we can somehow preserver."

The crowd went rowdier after they heard Jeff's plea. They have stopped complaining about the late information, but now they are arguing about who should be the leader for the project.

Every leader trying to show off how capable their country is, promoting their countries best research and engineering team.

Seeing the situation is getting out of control, someone shouted.

"Enough! Stop behaving like a greedy old man!"

The shout managed to steal the attention of the people who are arguing and quieted them down.

Seeing the people stopped talking, the gentlemen continue speaking again. "Whoever is in charge of the project is not important. Currently we need plans on how to save them, not some petty arguments! We have not even listened to the plans by NASA yet, but you guys want to discuss who will lead the project??"

The leaders who were arguing just now were stunned when someone younger than them scolding them in public.

"You are correct, apart from the plans that NASA is going to show us, we can also draft our plan to save the people. It is not restricted to one single project. But first, we shall listen to the plan, then... maybe we can cast a vote on who will be the leader on this billion-dollar project."

The middle-aged leader was trying to compose himself in this absurd situation, but the smile at the end gave him off.
