Chapter 31: South East Asia
While Sam and Jeff were still in a daze staring at their tablet and phones, the USGS office was in total chaos, with the buzzing sound coming from the computers. Most of the staff were struggling, to update their system and also updating Pentagon for the devastating news. Their phone has been ringing non-stop, as media trying to reach them for news.
Some of the higher-ups who have already received insider news were not that surprised, as the others, who are totally left in the dark about the possibility of Lake Toba eruption.

"Shit, another buoy detected an incoming tsunami! We have a total of 25 alerts received from the buoys of an incoming tsunami... its just minutes after Lake Toba Supervolcano erupted, but the tsunami has traveled all the way to Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. The Toba lake surely stands on its reputation as one of the VEI 8."
"Uh, the Sumatera Island is going to be divided from their Northern Part after this... wait, does anyone have any news from the neighboring country around Indonesia? I would like to know how are they coping with this disaster."
"Someone, could we have the NASA to show us a clearer live satellite image on the disaster? Mine, is so lagging..."
The idle scientists, were like a spectator, enjoying their disaster movie show, are sitting with their arms crossed together as they looked on the satellite view of the Lake Toba volcano erupted. From the screen, white patches of smoke were seen to be spreading from the Northern Sumatera to the rest of South-East Asia at an alarming speed.
"Wow, is this how a VEI 8 eruptions look like? Its effects covered such a vast area! Pheww... I have never imagined that I got to see all this while I am still alive! I mean, Wow!"
"Oi, be a little bit sensitive will you? Real people are dying over there. How come you are here speaking like you are watching an apocalypse movie instead?!" Dr. Rafael was pissed off when his colleague was behaving like an insensitive jerk.
"Yeah, I know, but, as a Scientist, this is a huge phenomenon that will be recorded in history. The last eruption from a VEI 8, is around 75,000 years ago... So, for the volcano chose this time around to erupt, and allowing me to be one of the scientists that have made the discoveries, sure is an honor to me, you know?"
"Hmm... I hate to agree with you, but with us, warning the surrounding country about Lake Toba's situation to them, I am sure necessary actions have been done by the authorities, to minimize the casualties in their country." Dr. Rafael was crossing his fingers, that the authorities were not being biased, as to spread the news only to the privileges and keeping it hidden from the rest of civilians. If they do keep the news under the table, hundreds of millions of people are going to lose their lives.
"Yeah, right. I am very, very sure that those who can afford to migrate to another country would have done so, before the eruption takes place. While the under privilege would have stayed back, and wait for their time to die. Dying slowly, as miserable as possible... "
"You do realize that there is no news, what so ever, that reported about the Lake Toba situations before the eruption? The affecting countries actually sit together and discussed this issue before. They, have decided to keep the news among themselves as they are afraid of mass migration to the other countries would be happening, seeking refugees in the other part of the world, and oh ya, don't' forget bout the panic and chaos it would create."
Dr. Kim Jae Yong one of the scientists sneered cynically as he made remarks, about the ugly truth of the politics that is happening around the world. He has been long one of the people who despised the government's action, but who cannot do anything to rebuke their one-sided actions.

The government has no right to keep the news regarding the possibility of the people to die, after being affected by the Supervolcano eruption.
They said, to think it again from their perspective, as chaos and panic would have killed the people first, days before the eruption killed them. Their worries have some points to them, but they still should have not kept them as a secret from the public.
Few of the countries even resolve to trick their people by saying internet connectivity was cut as the cable from the deep sea was experiencing setbacks. Very barbaric and inhumane!
Without the internet, news regarding the possible disaster could not have spread among the peoples, without them, airlines could not operate, thus, making the country susceptible to an incoming danger.
They are like birds, in a cage that is waiting to be captured and eaten.
When the volcanoes erupted, magma, volcanic rocks, and toxic ashes will be all around scattered, burying the people underneath. Buildings will collapse as it can no longer contain the weight of the ashes, and with the gigantic tsunamis as the post-eruption process, it would only make it worse for those who have somehow survived from the eruption.
The people are going to die, trap within, with no way out.
In the name of humanity, it is a very cruel thing to do. The people could have been taken as a refugee, somewhere, in the other part of continents, if the country leaders willing to sit together and discuss about the possibility of relocation of their people. Unfortunately, greed and ego tops everything. Even human lives are a game for them, despicable!
"Kim, they probably have other hidden issues that we still did not know about. We can make assumptions like we know it all right? Probably, they have discussed among them, and they decided to live or die in the country together. Who knows? They called it as being Patriotic!" Dr. Rafael pats Dr.Kim back as he said them.
During this disaster, Dr. Rafael did not think by being angry and aggressive would solve the things that have already happened. All they can do now is to work harder and alert the people of any incoming danger that mother nature will bring to them.
"Let us give a moment of silence as a respect to the dead." Dr. Rafael feels that now is the best moment to give their respect to the dead.
Dr. Kim bows his head in silence as he heard Dr. Rafael.
'May all of them will rest in peace, and... I am sorry.'

great1white For this, the VEI 8 (Volcanic Explosivity Index), it is often called as Supervolcanoes. It is deadly, and I specifically made this story about Lake Toba, because if it does erupt, I won't be alive anymore (T_T)
