Chapter 16: Betty's burial
Linda was a shadow of herself, she could barely talk to anyone,always on her own. Talked to no one, she isn't ready to loose another because it seems anybody that comes close to her dies,so she decides to stay on her own, making no friends. the only friend she made in school was Doris her roommate. She hardly goes for lectures,not quite long her marks started decreasing. She is failing day by day in school. No each day passes by without remembering her lost friends which made her to cry even in lectures. That made her to stop lectures for sometime. She Missed writing test and assignments. Doris on her side started noticing that her friend has stopped going to lectures and secretly went to meet her course rep for her score in some courses and was sad to see such a low score unlike her. Although she knows that Linda and the late Betty made there high scores by paying the lectures through cash and kind.
When her course rep showed Doris the very low marks she decided to confront her. She came back to the room only to meet her still crying in her bed. Doris dropped her bag and books and went straight to her bed "Linda seriously speaking you are not helping yourself at all, you are failing, this is not why your parents spent there hard earned money to train you in school only for you to come with bad result,please my friend if not for anything, for the sake of your parents, wake up and start school and make good grades, Rita and Betty are no more, haven't you mourned them enough, is making you to loose your sanity, they are dead and will never wake up,try as much as possible to forget them and face your studies, wherever they are now am sure they are resting ,please Linda you can do this if you can allow it" Doris said. Linda looked at her with tears on her eyes "is so easy for you to say that, Rita and Betty were my very close friends in school, my best friend, so attending lectures, writing assignments and test without them seems like a very big whole in my heart,I miss them so much, they meant a lot to me,my school is incomplete without them don't you get it, you said earlier that you went to see my course rep,Doris why would you do a thing like that" Linda asked in anger standing up. Doris looking at her angered face replied "calm down Linda, I was only being concerned". Linda looked at her" really,concerned as per what ". Doris said" I observed that you suddenly stopped school and thought that with that,the lecturers won't spare you,so I had to meet him and asked for your some of your scores in the courses that are out, I saw it and was shocked, Linda you are failing drastically, yes I understand you are still mourning for your two lost friends, I did not say you should stop but please don't let that get to your studies please ". Linda looking at her said" Doris thanks for your concern but please don't try that nonsense again, you are not my parent, so allow me,I will be fine "she said and laid down to continue with her sleep. " Linda please am sorry for doing what I did okay,I was only being worried as a roommate that is all,I won't check your scores like that again " she said and left leaving Linda to think deeply on what she said.
A week later Linda got a call from Betty's father "hello Sir good morning,". Mr Johnson answered morning my daughter I called to inform you that Betty my daughter's burial has been fixed". Linda said " Sir what is the date". Mr Johnson replied" 4th of next month March ". Linda replied sadly" okay Sir we shall be there,thanks for the info God bless you " Linda said and hung up. Immediately Linda started shedding tears again. After some few hours Doris came back from her night vigil. "Betty's burial date has Been fixed" Linda said when she saw her entering inside. Doris replied "oh when is the date" "4th of next month" added Doris"okay no problem we shall all be there"Doris said and left.
In preparation of Betty's burial,there course rep announced the date and urged the fellow students to join him as they bury one of them,they agreed on the time to assemble in school before leaving for her village and everyone must put on black added the course rep.
On the day of the burial, every sit was filled up with students of law department, uncles ,aunties, friends etc waiting for Betty's body to arrive before burying it. Few hours later a siren was heard from afar,peoples started crying, screaming, wailing. Linda wasn't left out as she sat beside Doris who held her and was consoling her, preventing her from falling down from her sit. When the ambulance reached some boys were called to help carry the casket and lay on top of the table,opened it for people to see and be sure and to also pay there last respect. Mr Johnson was seen walking round the casket crying and asking God to grant her eternal rest.
A priest of God was called upon to pray for the dead which he did, and some boys went and laid her down inside the ground 6ft and it was immediately covered with sand. People continued crying and went over to Mr Johnson to console him and give him words of encouragement.
The students of law department was called to say there last tribute which they all assembled and did, Linda was among them,as tears couldn't allow her to say a word.
Few hours later, the students including everybody left leaving only Linda and Betty..
