All That Glitters Is Not Gold

'Alright, I've only got a couple hours before Father shepherds me away to the Goblin's treasure trove, Gringotts Bank. I think it's about time to get some of my planning underway. The timeline is very sensitive at the moment, so I need to be extra careful not to change anything too drastically.'

'Pocket, annotation mode'

'Current Timeline/Projection:

1926 - Newt makes a mess in New York City

1926 - Tom Riddle is born and sent to Wool's Orphanage in London

1929 - Lucien and Orion Black are born

1938 - Tom Riddle attends his first year at Hogwarts

1940 - Lucien and Orion Black attend Hogwarts

1942 - Riddle opens the Chamber of Secrets

1943 - Riddle creates his first Horcrux

1943 - Riddle makes Peverell Ring his second Horcrux

1945 - Dumbledore defeat Grindlewald and retrieves the Elder Wand'

'It's a must to remove the weed at its roots. There is no way in hell I'm letting him make a single Horcrux. Offing Tommy boy is the easy part since I already know where he will be for most of the next decade. I could figure out how to do this now but he needs to meet Dumbledore. I have no idea how finding Riddle could have affected him and his battle with Grindlewald. Plus it will make everything easier when I go and get the Elder Wand.'

'The most likely date for his demise will be after I start attending Hogwarts. This way I won't have to rush anything too crazy before I get my wand. I was originally planning to get close to them to see what else I may need to do to clean up this timeline of Death Eater scum. Then I remembered that those guys suck a big fat one and I can get all the needed information from Riddle's mind before he disappears. Maybe there's a way to learn Parseltongue... hmmm.'

Arcturus walks into the sitting room to find Lucien with his notebook lounging in the afternoon sun.

'I can't believe he forced me to make that for him,' thinks Arcturus.

Trying to get a rise out of him, Arcturus taunts him about his invention. "What're you doing over there Luci? Playing with your empty journal?"

"Father, for the last time, it's called a notebook. It's for notes and thoughts... it's not that complicated. I only asked you to stick some papers together..." says Lucien.

"You had me duplicate a piece of parchment you drew lines on two hundred times! You're lucky the Gemino Charm doesn't cost very much magic."

"And that's why I've got about thirty exact copies in my room. I can't believe you didn't even want to help your own son. If Mother caught wind of it..." Lucien let out lightly.

"Don't you even think about it," growled Arcturus, "and you better have put the original away somewhere safe since I'm not making you another one."

Lucien gives his father a cheeky nod and closes his notebook.

Arcturus sees this and says, "Good! Now go get ready, we will be leaving shortly."

*******

As the father and son duo walked into Gringott's Bank, Lucien appraised the skill of their smiths. He was amazed at the intricate metalwork and the craftsmanship of both weapons and armors alike.

'There's a reason they are known for being at the pinnacle of the art. Goblin-made silver really does cost a fortune.' thinks Lucien as he and his father make their way up to the teller.

Arcturus looks at the goblin teller and says, "Please tell Furgok we are here to meet with him."

The teller nods as another goblin goes to inform Furgok. The two Blacks are lead to an ornate conference room covered in red and gold decor.

As Furgok enters the room both Blacks stand to greet him the short goblin.

"Furgok, good to see you. I hope you have been well," says Arcturus to his account manager.

Furgok replies, "Yes of course, you as well. Ah and you've brought one of your sons I see."

Lucien turns towards him and bows. "May you watch the life leave the eyes of your betrayers," greets Lucian in goblinspeak.

Surprised the goblin responds, "And may your enemies gold gleam and shine in your vault.

"All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; the old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost," Lucien retorts.

Furgok looks contemplative for a moment before giving Lucien a slight nod.

Arcturus is surprised, as even he didn't know that Lucien could speak Gobbledegook. Furgok then motions for them to take a seat before getting down to business.

Arcturus begins, "Young Lucien here would like a chance to learn some skills from the goblins. Though I told him it's rather unlikely to happen, he wanted to come anyways to plead his case."

Furgok looks at Lucien with a malicious smile and says, "Oh, and why is it we should teach you anything? Like plated metal, most wizards say they speak truths when it is merely a wrapping for deceit."

"Truth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold," Lucien chimes.

Furgok waits for him to continue.

"Truthfully, I don't require any teaching. I'm only here to obtain the curriculum and corresponding literature used in your curse-breaking and enchanter training. I know that these are post-Hogwarts level topics, but let's just say I like to read ahead."

Lucien continues, "I know that you will not part with these easily, so I have come here to make a bargain."

Furgok looks at the seven-year-old intensely and grins, "And do tell, what of worth you have to trade?"
