Chapter 29: Only Inhuman

"What are you going to do once you are Chained?" (Oana)

"I'm not sure. We've been here for over six years. There was no trade that I was being prepared for prior to coming here. What about you, do you have plans?" (Rehor)

"In my community, the women were housewives. None of them had any trades, to speak of. I think I was expected to just follow along with what was normal. So no, I don't have any plans." (Oana)

"I'm going to help out with my father. He's a blacksmith." (Lukas)

"At least you have a trade that you have some familiarity with. I was the third child of a farmer. I was just to be married off to another farmer." (Migle)

The four of us were roughly at the same level of training, and we were discussing what our future would be. Oana is still the main person that I lusted after. Lukas and Migle were two of other un-Chained that were here. They both were in the beginning of their training when I started here.

As we were the closest people in the same level of training, a lot of our interaction was with each other. I would not say that we were friends, but, they are at least companions that I understand.

Lukas was a little older than me. He was completely devoid of emotions when I got here. With him trying to act human, it took a little bit longer than normal. Though once he re-emerged from his shell, he became talkative. I am not sure if this reflected his original personality or not.

As for Migle, she was the same age as I am. She was nearing the end of her training. In a few weeks she was going to be judged on if she was qualified to be Chained. She was, honestly, the best at emulating emotions compared to the rest of us. She acted very lively.

"I've though about just being a wanderer for a while. I want to see if anything will draw my attention." (Migle)

"I can't see the practicality of that. Not having the comfort of a shelter seems kind of pointless to me." (Rehor)

"How will you pay for food?" (Lukas)

"I have some familiarity with hunting. I can always do that. And it's not like we don't learn how to survive in the wild." (Migle)

"You could always just live the life of a hermit. You are fairly good with healing, you could probably survive with farming." (Oana)

"True, but I would like to visit some of the other halls and see the differences between them. We don't communicate with the others that much. It would be educational." (Migle)

"Why not become a messenger? You would be able to travel, and get paid for it." (Lukas)

"I'd say go around and act as a wandering healer. As Oana said, you are good at healing, you could use that as a trade." (Rehor)

It is strange. Other than Lukas, whose father has a specified trade, none of the rest of us know what to do. We are nearly at the age of being adults, and we have no real clue on what to do with our life.

There was a time when I questioned about going back to my village and living near my family, but I do not see myself being able to live near enough to them. I am not able to keep my facade of humanity up for long periods of time. I do wish to see that they are alright, but living near them seems impossible.

"I don't wish to live a life of solitude. I know I would be comfortable with that, but… I'm not sure, it just feels wrong to me. I want to attempt to integrate with regular people." (Rehor)

"There is always the option of being a slayer. Though it's not that common, there are a fair few animals that become Unleashed. They are a danger to nature." (Lukas)

"I've thought of doing that, but I don't wish to lose myself that much. Slayers are known to become even that much remote from humans than even the rest of us." (Oana)

"They are also the ones that take most un-Chained away from their families. They don't have the understanding of explaining why un-Chained must leave." (Lukas)

"I was lucky. The healer in my village was an Unleashed. She was the one that brought me here. I believe that she explained to my family properly." (Rehor)

"I wasn't so lucky." (Oana)

"Same with me." (Migle)

Slayers, as the name implies, slay animals and humans that are Unleashed. They are often those that are not able to adapt to society after their training is over. It gives them something productive to do. Regrettably, for the most part, they just respond to orders. Most of their free-will has not come back to them. It is not something other Unleashed look down upon. In fact, we hold them in high regards. They are the wet-works of the Unleashed. Something most of us do not want to do.

Truthfully, all Unleashed are expected to act out the role of a slayer if it is needed. An animal that has become Unleashed can become a disaster for it's surrounding area. An Unleashed rabbit can control it's predator to leave an area, disrupting the delicate habit. We become population control in those situations.

There are also some human un-Collared Unleashed that end up making their own communities. A few of them have survived long enough to become foreign enough from what humans are used to, that they are not able to interact with normal society, in the slightest. Some of them have been around long enough that they are no longer able to be helped. And then that is where Slayers come to shine. To destroy those communities.

"I will probably go into some skilled trade so I don't have to talk any more than I have to. Probably going into something dealing with wood, as Father had taught me a decent enough amount about the different types. It can be profitable enough, that I can avoid doing more jobs than I need to." (Rehor)

"You will need someone to keep you from forgetting time if you do that. We all have problems where we get too involved in what we are doing, to the detriment to our health." (Lukas)

"And that is why the products of a lot of Unleashed become coveted as much as they do. We've got our power and our over attentiveness. We're flawed in the eyes of regular people." (Oana)

"Well, I'll just get married to another Unleashed, so I can have a caretaker." (Rehor)

"I'll be your wife. You can't find them like me anymore." (Migle)

"Are you being serious, or are you attempting to flirt?" (Lukas)

"Attempting. How did it seem?" (Migle)

"I didn't feel anything. I'm still trying to learn to reciprocate those advances. So, maybe it's just me." (Rehor)

"She is physically attractive. You could do worse Rehor." (Oana)

"I'm more attracted to you. But yes, she is attractive." (Rehor)

This is one part of the conversation that I know that I could never have in my previous experiences. Without any alcohol involved, I straight up to Oana that she is attractive. As a statement only, nothing further was implied by it. Nothing was lost from saying it.

CREATORS' THOUGHTS
ApollyonDais ApollyonDais

The need for humans to be human, is their feelings. If their feelings aren't in existance, what do they do? I'm not truly sure, but this is what I'm seeing.
