Chapter 6: Peace in the Valley

Late spring, early summer had finally come. The days where it is almost freezing at night and the days are able to make you sweat in a moments notice. It was the time of year when everything was needed to be done as soon as possible. There was never enough time to get done what was needed to be done.

With Mother being pregnant, and me finally being able to, I was tasked with taking over a lot of things that she had previously been in charge of doing. Simple things; hauling water to the house, for cooking and cleaning, tilling the soil to plant the crops in for the up coming season, and laundry. Who says that it was only a woman's job to do laundry. It is harder than it looks to keep up on laundry for a household of four people. Especially, doing it without washing machines.

Today, especially with having rained the previous night, was a good day to work on tilling the soil. It is not like we had some type of beast of burden to pull a plow. No, it is a little bit more involved than that. Initially, to break up larger chunks of soil up, you had to, by hand, use a hoe or a shovel. From there, you yoked yourself on to a plow pushed by hands. If you had not broken up the bigger pieces of soil, trying to plow would be rather painful. Learning how to till the soil, I have received a rather bit of bruised shins and shoulders. Suddenly stopping when using force, well, inertia is a bitch.

Though, still fairly young, and small in size, Katarina was helping out where she could. As it was one of those days, where it was conducive to taking care of the garden, I was not able to be as aggressive at getting water for the house. A five or ten minute walk, a couple times, would have dropped productivity, in an already busy time. So, Father had tasked Katarina to get a few buckets of water. It might have taken her more trips than either Father or Mother would have taken, it was still helpful. And, with Mother being close to popping, any help was a blessing. I'm not sure how Father was able to keep up on the chores, when Katarina and I were born.

"Rehor, take a break, and get your Father back here for some lunch. He should be down by the hollow, near the waterfall. Hurry and get him." (Mother)

"Yes Mommy." (Rehor)

It was not a huge waterfall that was being talked about, just a foot high drop. When only called it a waterfall, as descriptor for the surrounding. Without any time of landmarks, forests are confusing and easy to get lost in. Yes, I have gotten lost, when I was younger. And I was only less than a mile from home when I got lost. As an adult, in mind, that was embarrassing. Luckily, Father was able to locate me in no time.

Since I knew where Father was, roughly, it was simple to get to him. At least, now that a knew the area. Just a few minutes of walking, and I was able to find him.

Now, since he was engaged in his work, using an axe, I did not call out to him. While not as sharp as knives, axes are sharp in there own right. And using the force need to drive the axe into wood, you do not want to be distracted. I had gotten in trouble for that when I was younger. Well, not in real trouble, just more of a lecture of why you should not yell out to someone when they were doing that type of work. It, actually, makes some sense.

There are so many things, in living this type of lifestyle, that I realized I did not know how to do. Yes, I did some camping, when I was in school trips, so I knew the gist of starting a fire. But, that was using matches and lighter fluid. Try to start a fire with flint and a striking plate. It takes a lot more skill than I had ever realized. That is one of the more simplistic things to be educated on. I could not imagine trying to the same thing with a fire bow.

Eventually, Father came to a point where I could get his attention. It was only a few minutes of waiting.

"Daddy, it is time for food. Mommy is waiting for us." (Rehor)

"Head on home. I will be back after I clean up a little." (Father)

"OKAY!!!" (Rehor)

It has become a habit to talk as a child. It does help that I am still learning a new language, and do not have all the words an adult would have. But, it does, to some extent, grate on me that I think as an adult, and talk as a child. I have complex thoughts, but speak simplistically. It makes it even more difficult, since I have to act as a child, which I do for my parents. I do not have the cathartic release of ever dropping the facade of a child and act like the adult I, mentally, am.

While I start heading back towards, and am almost there, I hear Mother screaming in pain. Not the cries of pain, where you start cursing, no, it was not that type. Instead it is was the type where you have lost your breathe, from pain, and are finally able to exhale.

I freeze. I do not think I have ever heard Mother in that type of pain. I would have loved to say that I bravely ran up to her to try and give some type of comfort. But no, I locked up. What could "I" do? I don't know anything. I am useless. I am failure as a son and as a human.

OK, I'm finally done with the initial world building and need to start advancing the story. Rehor, is only 9 at this point in the story. And this is what I feel like a modern person would act in this type of situation. The knowledge we know isn't useful in practical sense. And yes, we pick a random bits of information here and there in our life, it's not enough usable information. We would not be some type of fount of knowledge that would be able change society.

Thank you for reading the story. I hope you are enjoying it.
