Chapter 19: To Follow a Hornet

It was taking a lot longer for Hornet to show up. Viking and I waited and waited. We thought that she might have lost track of the time - which is understandable in this place - but she was taking too long. I decided that we should go look for her. The both of us left the tavern to search. We walked around the city and when we found her usual patrol, they said that she already left for her break. I wondered if we passed her, and decided to go back. And as we walked back, I tripped on some electric crossbow lying around. Strange, I thought. Really strange. But there was also a knife right next to it. When Viking took a look at it, he realized what it was. He gasped in shock. His mind went from surprised to happy to angry in seconds. For that moment, those two states of his merged into one.

"This knife belonged to my brother. It was the same knife Cutter first picked up when we spawned. He used it against that spider-thing," Viking said. Then, the two of us looked at the dark alleyway that met us. This route would go directly to the tavern. And it clicked. The crossbow belonged to Hornet. But the knife was a mystery. But Viking came up with his own conclusion.

"Those dark elves. They must have a grudge against us," he said angrily as he took out his axe, "First, they kill my brother. Now, they taunt us."

Mine wasn't entirely different. I did think those dark elves must have had a grudge against us. We did ride that blazing dragon into the city. They probably hated us just as much as General Kull. But, there was one thing that worried me.

"They not only taunt us," I said, "But they took our friend. We have to find her. We have to find Hornet."

"Right. Let's go, Roach," Viking replied.

I unsheathed my blade in one hand and held an electric crossbow in the other. Viking held his axe tightly. The two of us made our way into the dark alleys. But it led us to a dead end. The walls were too high, but I wouldn't be surprised if these dark elves had the acrobatic ability to do it. But then Viking spotted a sewer grate. He picked it up and threw it away.

"Good job, Viking," I said.

"Don't worry. I got plenty of motivation. I'll rip these guys apart."

I was glad that he had enthusiasm, but I was worried for Hornet. But they knew about Cutter. They left his specific knife as if to draw us in. These people must have found out a great deal about us. I wondered whether it was even meant to be left there. It could've just been looted from the battlefield. Either way, whether it was a trap or not, I knew Hornet was in danger. I had to keep going. The two of us dropped down into the sewers. Viking was first, and I second.

Little did I know, we weren't the only ones there. Above the building, there was an undead bat watching us - or more specifically me. And if that bat watched us, then the general watched us - although for what purpose, I was unsure.
