Since Ryder had such a high reach, there was a chance that he could get federal agents to investigate, which would've put him in trouble.

If the Federal officials came to investigate and talked to this man, then there was a good chance that the truth would be out, which was not beneficial to him.

The man kept screaming, but all he did was get even more beating.
