Chapter 8

Sarah panicked when it approached her. She hid behind the bed and hoped she was hallucinating. She felt a weight on the bed. She froze in fear. She felt a heavy weight on her head so she looked up. She saw a massive white head tilted curiously.

"...Nimbus?" She asked, tentatively.

It nodded its head.

She was so relieved that she didn't question that it responded to her question.

Calming herself, she reached out and petted her massive pet.

She heard a sound similar to that of an engine and realized Nimbus was purring.

Smiling, she got ready to go to work. On her way there, she called Callum.

"What the hell was that ball?" She demanded.

"Meet me on the corner next to my apartment building and we'll talk.'' He replied and abruptly hung up.

'Why can't he be straightforward?' She wondered.

"I'm leaving to possibly get more food." She said to Nimbus.

Nimbus sat next to the door.

"I can't bring you yet." She said. "I'm trying to figure out what the hell happened to both you and me. Also, I need to get a liscence for you so I can take you places."*

....

When she arrived at the corner that Callum's house was on, she waited for about five minutes before he came out.

"What the hell was in that orb?" She demanded.

"A soul." Callum replied nonchalantly. "What of it?"

"My cat turned into a panther!" She exclaimed. "How do you explain-"

Callum cut her off.

"I can explain souls no better than you can explain your ability to manipulate lightning." He said mildly. "And even if I could, I wouldn't."

"And why wouldn't you?" She asked, exasperated.

"Because learning is half the fun." Callum smiled, moving past her.

"Okay, you got me there." She resigned herself to a long, drawn-out explanation over several days.

"Wait." She moved in front of him. "How can I feed my cat now? Do I need to buy souls from you or something?"

She didn't think that she could afford souls from him if he was charging her.

"The one soul can replenish energy for your cat to eat over time." He replied. "I wouldn't mind it if you took some fresh corpses to me for soul extraction, though."

She looked at him, trying to tell wheter or not he was joking.

"You're joking, right?" She wanted to make sure.

"Nope. I need dead people to extract souls." He replied. "I use souls to grow my own power as well."

She let him move past her, processing what he just said.

"Hey." She turned and ran after him for one last question. "Did you kill Shawn?"

"He attacked Stardust first." Callum sounded like he didn't care.

"How did the knife shatter?" She asked, ignoring his irritatingly nonchalant attitude

"You'll see with your own pet." He replied, waving her off. "Your pet will show you when it's ready."

'What the hell is that supposed to mean?' She wondered.

....

That night, Callum took her to the graveyard. He had told her he wanted to show her his power.

"Watch closely." She was still trying to figure out whether or not he was serious when he stuck his arm into thin air and all the way up to his elbow vanished.

"Where did your arm go?" She gasped.

"Another dimension." He said. "I think. I don't actually know."

He pulled out a turquoise orb the size of a grapefruit.

"My best guess is that colour is grade, where violet is the best." He explained. "And size is the indicator for power."

"How big was Shawn's core?" She asked curiously.

"You know those small Cutie oranges?" He asked.

She nodded.

"About half that size." Her brows raised.

Is it about strength of the soul, then?" She wondered aloud. "One's willpower, perhaps?"

"I think it's the former." Callum said. "It can't be willpower because the children who died all had turquoise souls. Children have very little willpower."

"So Shawn had an incredibly pathetic soul, then?" She asked.

"Probably." Callum said. "Also, how can you speak so normally about someone who almost raped you?"

"Well, he's dead." She said, sighing. "That helps alot."

Callum nodded. "Once someone is dead, unless you have a firm attachment to them, you will rapidly start to view them neutrally." He spoke like a philosopher.

He gave the freshly acquired soul to Stardust so she could see how he ate.

Stardust inhaled and most of the soul turned into mist and vanished into Stardust's mouth.

"How does it restore energy from the core?" She asked, figuring the souls broke the law of the conservation of mass and energy.

"I have no idea." Callum said in defeat. "I also have no idea how I got this ability, why I have it, and how I'm going to avenge Salem."

He appeared to be fighting back tears.

"I have to forge a path of vengeance that has been untrodden for centuries." He said, laying his hand on a tombstone and pulling out another orb.

"I have no information on the killer and no way of obtaining information on the killer."

He stopped pulling souls out of thin air and demonstrated how to absorb one.

"I only hope I can find the killer before I die." Callum said.

....

When she went home that night, she was greeted by a strange sight.

"What the hell, Nimbus?"

How is it that I manage to make a perfect 900 word chapter?

Oh so satisfying.

*Yes, you need a liscence in some places to bring your pets. People need to register the pets as emotional support animals or as disability animals.(Animals that assist someone with their disabilities such as a seeing-eye dog.)
