Chapter 59: Death
"Grace," A random female voice calls to me, "dear, please wake up. You need to wake up, please wake up."
I open my eyes, but I don't exactly feel awake. I see...Sam? She's nudging and shaking me awake, but not too roughly. She's alone. But...something's not right. She's in her hospital gown, but she looks oddly pale yet perfectly fine at the same time. Something doesn't sit right, but what is it? It's dark around us and she notices that I'm looking at her now.
"Grace!" She hugs me, but I can't feel her. "I need you to come with me. I don't have much time left here with you. Well, not unless you come with me."
"Why?" I question her, "Why do I have to come? Do I have a choice? Why aren't you in your hospital bed?"
"Oh." She's surprised by the questions, "Well, I technically am on my hospital bed right now, I'm just at two places at once. And, well, you do have a choice. I just don't want to be alone, you know?"
"I get the feeling," I admit, but I'm not sure whether I want to go or not. "but what do you mean by two places at once?"
She doesn't answer, but I still get it. I hear running outside my door, nurses, and doctors shouting to each other, hurrying each other. I can't exactly tell what they're saying, but I hear one word over and over again. "Code-" I don't think Sam's ok.
"Well," Now she's answering me, "I think you know. Still, please come with me, I'm scared to be alone. I need someone with me."
"Sam," I'm not going to just drop it, "are you...dead?"
"Well duh, didn't you just hear what was outside your door? Anyway, do you want to come with me or not?"
"I-I..." I hesitate. I don't want to die, I want to see Laureen. But, a part of me tells me to grab her hand. It urges me, a small whisper getting louder and louder in my ear. She's looking at me, kind of smiling sinisterly, yet sweetly. "Fine. I'll go with you."
"Yay!" She jumps up and down, happily, "Let's go!"
She grabs my hand, and I can feel her this time. I'm jerked upwards and feel like I'm being ripped in half. It's not a pleasant feeling, but I see why it felt like that. I turn around and see myself, lying there all alone. My face is pale, the life sucked out of me. Did I just..?
"Hurry!" She drags me along as she floats out the door. I get why she wants me to hurry, and I hear it. I just flatlined. Do I want to do this? We float rather fast and get to the hospital entrance, a bright, glowing white light. "C'mon, we're almost there!" She goes through, no problem.
She drags me through, but I don't go in. I'm pushed back, I'm not allowed out. I try again out of curiosity but succeed to no avail. I'm stuck here. Is it not my time?
"Grace-" Sam starts but is dragged into the light. I don't see her again.
"Sam!" I call out to her, but she's gone. I feel something in my chest...but I'm dead. How? Then it hits me. More like they hit me. I'm dragged away from the entrance, back to my room. I'm sucked back into my body and I open my eyes. I'm back in my room with the lights on, surrounded by nurses and doctors. They performed CPR on me and woke me up, taking their hands away. I just died and came back. Well, shit.
