Chapter 26: And then there were two
We eat our lunch and continue to rant on and on. The bell eventually rings and we go to class. Laureen and I head to Personal Finance where Evelyn and Sam should be. Rumors have circulating that she's not here. I haven't seen her in the halls today, so it must be true. Come to think of it, I haven't seen her twin brother Shane either. It's only my second day, what the heck man?!
We enter the classroom and sit down. There's no assigned seats so we sit by each other. We scan the room even though not everyone is there yet. No signs of Sam, Shane, or Evelyn. At least Evelyn isn't here yet, unless she left for some reason. I just hope she's gone.
It comes to a point where more people come in and the bell rings, starting class. They're not here. None of of them. Not Sam, Shane, or Evelyn. We already suspected Sam and Shane not being here, but Evelyn? She was just here this morning...kind of explains why she wasn't at lunch. Oh well, she's gone and Mark can emotionally heal a bit.
Class goes on with no interruptions. No Evelyn coming in late, no phone calls from the office, nothing. In fact, the rest of the day goes on without any run-ins. I mostly can't get Alexis most likely liking Mark. I mean, I don't have any proof and I barely know her. I shouldn't bug her about it. That's kind of rude.
Eventually school ends and I meet up with Laureen again and talk to her. "Hey," I ask, "have you noticed that Evelyn isn't at school now?"
"Yeah," she responds, "it's kinda weird. I mean, she spiked Sam's drink. She could get into a lot of trouble for that."
"Wait, yeah," I respond kind of confused yet also 'wait a second', "why wasn't she arrested or something this morning?"
"Well they might not have had evidence. Also, she probably left second hour-ish time and probably got arrested. Sam doesn't usually hang out with Evelyn, but they were at a choir event and stuff like that."
"Wait, she actually got arrested?" I'm shocked, really. It's only my second day and this crazy woman got herself arrested my targeting one of my friends. What a time to be alive.
"Yeah, I just heard that Sam's body didn't take it well. So she's in the hospital and that's why Shane isn't here either due, to it being his sister and the school allowing him to be gone. They understand." Holy fuck, man.
"Well, is she going to be ok?"
"It seems like she's in a stable condition and overall going to be back soon."
"That's good. It could be worse."
"Yeah. I wish I could visit her, but I got work today. I work at the grocery store, I'm just a cashier, but it helps. I have a car, but I'm saving up for college. I've made a quite bit actually and my GPA is pretty good."
"That's great! I've saved up quite a bit too, I just don't have a car. My parent's have struggled with money before, so they're saving for retirement."
While we're talking Alexis and Mark pop by. They also join the conversation, but eventually Laureen leaves for work and Mark has to catch his bus since he's actually going home instead of us all hanging out. And then it was just me and Alexis.
