70% Look My Way Too / Chapter 21: 21 | A New Brother

Chapter 21: 21 | A New Brother

It was dawn when we had to hide from the villagers. The horses had collapsed along the way, but the villagers just over looked them and continued to search for us. We hid inside of the cliffs that ZhouHan had dug and covered up.

It was a dark and small hole. I couldn't see anything. My body began to tremble with cold sweat and I fell to my knees.

"Oi. What's wrong?" ZhouHan whispered.

"N-nothing. I'm fine." I replied.

My breathing became heavier and I felt dizzy. ZhouHan rubbed my back trying to comfort me.

"It's not nothing. Can you hold on a little longer?"

"Mmm. I can."

It wasn't until sunset when the villagers finally gave up. ZhouHan opened the wall and I almost fell over from taking a step outside. He catches me and gets me on Lowei and then mounted on his own horse. He pulled the reins on Lowei as he guided me.

"Get some rest. I'll wake you up later." He said.

I laid ontop of Lowei and slowly went to sleep. ZhouHan woke me up at sun set and we set up a fire to eat.

"Why were they chasing us?" I asked.

"You saw those horses in the stall right? Each one of them had bags and belongings that basically yelled out 'I'm going on a long journey.' Those travelers died in that village or more like eaten. The villagers there eat men and from the looks of it, they were starving. They love the raw taste of human flesh. Honestly, worse than the dead since some of them can control the elements. I didn't expect to run into them here though. They're practically extinct."

"How did you know they eat humans? They looked normal to me."

"Remember that dead man that possibly fell off the cliff? He had human bite marks all over his body. It looks like they chewed him up pretty badly before he fell to his doom. Then we encountered a village. There were human bones laying on the ground. Many would mistake it as animal bones, but not my eyes, I can tell if it's human or not. And lastly, the horse stalls. Missing owners and horses that carried way too much weight that none of the villagers touched. They can't stand the smell and taste of animals."

"You know so much. I would have died many times if I didn't meet you." I smiled.

"I just pay attention to the details. For example, you don't fear death, but you're afraid of small dark areas. You have nightmares every night, but you said you came from a happy family. Someone with a good upbringing would act more like me, but you're too humble and naive. You said you had brothers that protected you, but your body is covered in scars. You also said you had a brother that taught you things, but you barely knew what the elements were and worse you have no clue about the dangers of the world!"

"Haha... I got caught?" I smiled, but ZhouHan looked at me very sternly. I sighed. "You're right. I didn't have that great of an upbringing, but not all of it was wrong. I was adopted and I was hated, but there were happy moments too. I left because my existence bothered them too much. Even if they're kind to me now, I can see it in their eyes, their discomfort. I don't fear death, because there's no one who would truly care if I disappeared. It was better that way." I smiled at ZhouHan as he looked at me helplessly.

"Are you dumb? Ah no wait, I shouldn't say that, since you are. Why are you giving up so fast? That family just wasn't meant for you, so find people who are. Don't say you'll travel the world just to disappear and you're quite rude. I've been traveling with you all this time of course I would care if you died."

Tears fell from my face and an overwhelming feeling that I didn't understand took over. ZhouHan quickly came to rub my back as I cried. I have never cried so long and hard before. It was the first time anyone had said they cared for me, was worried about me, and comforted me. ZhouHan was the kindest man I had ever met. He protected and saved me many times. He taught me so much about the world and most of all, he always smiled. How can someone be this kind to me? It was unbelievable and it felt like a dream.

"Aye Aye. Stop crying now. Men shouldn't shed this much tears. From now on I'll be your older brother. I'll teach you everything and protect you from anyone who bullies you, okay? Cheer up!" ZhouHan smiled helplessly.

I couldn't help, but cry even harder. That night I cried myself to sleep. My nightmares occurred less and I valued my life more. The words I had always wanted to hear, he said them all. I was truly happy for the first time.

From that day on I stuck to ZhouHan at all times and everyday he would teach me or show me something new. I smiled more and I talked more. It was like I was a totally different person.

We continued our journey and bumped into multiple dangerous situations, but we always pulled through. Although the world had so many dangers, there was beauty as well. We stopped by a hot spring to bathe, we climbed the floating mountains, and we ventured through the glowing forest.

I have seen and done so much, but I didn't think that this short happiness would come to an end. We stopped by a lake hidden deep in the mountains and there were little creatures dancing on the surface of the water.

"Those are water spirits. They cleanse bodies of fresh water, but they don't usually show themselves like this. This is considered a bad omen. They're warning the other spirits." ZhouHan explained.

"Is something bad going to happen?"

As if answering me, several of the dead walked by us passing the lake. Usually when they're near the living they would attack, but the dead just kept walking and didn't care for us. It was strange, so we followed them. It was a long walk before they finally reached their destination. The few dead that we were following had fallen off the cliff and as we treaded carefully, below the cliff was a valley filled with the dead.

"So that's where they went." ZhouHan commented.

A few seconds later I could hear a flute and then a group of people in black cloaks had appeared. ZhouHan quickly picked me up and we hid in the trees where they couldn't see us.

"Ravens. We have to leave. There's too many of them."

Just as we turned to run suddenly one of the black cloaked people had appeared before us.

"Going somewhere?"
