Chapter 4: Chapter 4
April landed in Beijing late in the afternoon. She walked out of the airport and wanted to hail a taxi when she number into someone.
'I am so sorry, are you okay?' She looked up to see a dashing man in front of her. She wanted to stare, but quickly corrected herself. 'I am sorry' she said again, this time more like a whisper. When she heard no response she grabbed the handle of her suitcase again and walked away.
She denied the urge to look back and hailed a taxi. 'What is the destination?' The driver asked. April looked at the address on her phone and read it aloud. The driver gave a quick nod and started the car.
When she arrived at her destination she saw an old looking building. It had three floors. She walked towards the building and knocked on the door. A friendly looking old lady opened the door. April had to bend her body and the lady had to look up to see eye to eye. The lady took a step back and invited April in. She wanted to walk right in when she saw the lady looking at her shoes. 'Is there anything wrong?' The old lady hesitated for a bit when she said: 'Just take off your shoes and put them on the rack.'
April rented a small apartment on the top floor. She walked two stairs with her heavy suitcase and bag. When she opened the door to her apartment she walked right into the living room. There was an old sofa right underneath the window. She walked towards the sofa, sat down an closed her eyes. She instantly fell asleep. April was never able to sleep in a plane, so she wasn't able to sleep for 24 hours.
When April woke up the next day, it was already 11 in the morning. She walked to the kitchen and opened the small fridge. 'Seems like I am going to die this morning because of starvation.' April searched for her wallet and found some Norwegian Crowns a few Euro's and 200 Yuan. Now she only had to find a store to buy some food.
A small 20 minutes later April found a foodstall. She didn't really care that she was eating candy for breakfast. As long as she didn't die it would be fine. She walked back to her apartment and asked for some cleaning cloths and started to clean her apartment. Especially the doors were very dirty. And after an hour of cleaning she was happy with the result. This would do for now. When she wanted to put the cloths in her hand away, she slipped over some water and fell hard on the floor. Everything went black.
Two days later, when she opened her eyes, she found herself lying in the hospital. 'You are finally awake. That's good!'
'What happened?'
'I only know that your landlady found you unconcious in your room las night.'
'Okay, thank you'
'You're welcome'
After an hour the landlady came to the hospital. 'You said you would pay the rent after two days.' 'Yes I said that' April said 'Hasn't it only been one day? Was I already unconcious for a whole day and night when you found me?'
'Yes, so I would like you to pay the rent now.' The landlady said. 'I need my wallet to do so.' The landlady gave a long sigh: 'Okay, I'll collect it tonight at seven.' 'Perfect' April said with a huge fake smile on her face.
