(MC POV)
I find it boring to trek down towards their house using the long narrow slope in the mountain.
So I just jumped down straight to the ground a few miles away from their house and land on the tree trunks.
And just near where I landed, there was a boy with a hatchet, chopping a big log that ten-times bigger than him.
I smiled and greeted the boy.
"Didn't I tell you, that's my job from now on, Tanjiro?"
...
(Tanjiro POV)
"Didn't I tell you, that's my job from now on, Tanjiro?"
As I chopped this hard dead log with my weak arms. I heard a familiar voice in my back and I turned around to face it.
"Good morning, Uncle Kizuato!"
Like always, Uncle Kizuato would appear out of nowhere like a ninja.
If there are people I idolize, it would be my Father and Uncle Kizuato, definitely.
Their voice was soothing to hear and it's full of meaning of how life works.
When I was a child, I see father killed a bear using his hatchet which amazes me.
But for Uncle Kizuato, he killed a bear with his bare hands in one-punch.
I did tell my parents about it but no one believes me.
And Uncle Kizuato completely denied my allegation about that.
Even their graceful dance was amazing to look at too. But my father only dances when winter came, where Uncle Kizuato would dance every morning.
When I was free, I always sneak into his house and watch him dance.
"I'd wanted to help, Uncle Kizuato! I'm a man now, and my family needs my support which I cannot let them down!"
My Father's frail body was getting worse and worse each month.
As the eldest son, I needed to learn how to become the pillar of the house.
That is my role because I am the eldest!
...
(MC POV)
This boy... Sigh...
"It's okay to be responsible, Tanjiro. But your still a kid, you needed to enjoy your youth or you'll regret it someday, you know."
"Thanks for your kindness, Uncle Kizuato! But I'll never regret this!"
"You see, there's no need to be like that-!"
"Don't worry, Uncle Kizuato!"
"Listen, Tanji-"
"Never!"
This boy and his persistence!
I sigh and thought that I'll never persuade him to be what I like him to be.
"Okay, okay." I slightly pushed him away from me as my hands were on his shoulder. "What about the charcoal? Are you done?
"Yes, Uncle Kizuato."
"Good. Let's go to your house"
"But-!"
"No "But", let's go and leave that log there. I chop it later."
He lamented and heed my word.
We walk into the woods and arrived at their house.
A woman with white pale-skin was drying the sheets outside the house. Her dark-violet eyes were glistering with care as she teaches her two daughters how to properly wag the sheets before hanging it.
"Good morning, Kie." I greeted.
"Good morning too, Kizuato. We have a nice day today right?"
"Glad I am not the only one notices it."
With me and her family partnership in making the charcoal, I'd become close to them.
Kie invited me for breakfast which I always accept as the children would pull me inside the house.
As always, I and Tanjuro would talk about adult stuff while the children would cling on us playing.
Kie served breakfast. It was chicken-soup and small bread.
"Hmm... Did my last hunt already gone?" I ask.
"About the dear? No, there's still have some stock in the kitchen. I'm just conserving it so it can last for more than a week." Kie reply.
"Oh... Looks like I need to hunt again, huh."
"Sorry about, Kizuato. Its already been much that you helped my family." Tanjuro answered this time.
"It's okay, no sweat," I said in a sedate tone.
I looked at Tanjiro and ask. "Where're the goods?"
"Outside, Uncle Kizuato. Can I go with you, Uncle?"
"What about your little training earlier?" I'd reminded him.
"Ah! Yeah..." He said crestfallen.
After breakfast, the children play outside as I and Tanjuro looked at them while we sat in his room.
"Did you change your mind?"
I ask out of nowhere.
"That again? It's just a waste of time. I already accepted it, there's no way doctors could cure my frail body."
He said unfazed.
"It's not about you, you knew that right? Just look at your children. What would happen after you're gone?"
"That's why your there, Kizuato. I trusted you."
He said looking at me with his calm eyes.
I looked at him in the corner of my eyes. "That again too?" My word backfires at me.
"I hate to admit this, but that's the truth. I'll leave someday my family, and mostly Kie..."
He said looking back at his wife that resuming drying the clothes and sheets.
"Sigh... Well, it reminded me. Your wife was a total hottie ey."
I said meaningfully to infuriates him.
"Yeah, your right. Just look at those hips men, they're most thick. That's why you should take her after I died."
He didn't take my bait which irritated me.
"You knew that I am a hermit right."
"That's why you're trustworthy. I can leave my family safe to a guy like you."
Instead of replying, I stand-up and headed outside to take the charcoal to start trekking down the mountain.
"I trust you, Kizuato."
He said to me before I could've got to stand-up after I put my geta in my foot.
"I trust you." He repeated.
I looked at him in a few moments before I spoke.
"Look, Tanjuro. I can't promise what you want. The least I could do was to be there with your family when they are down after you died. You can count on me to that one."
I didn't wait for his reply and walked away from him.
I lifted the long wooden pole where six baskets were hanged and put my other hand to the cart where six more baskets full of charcoal was been packaged.
"I wanna come, Uncle Kizuato!"
"Me too! I wanna come!"
Hanako and Shigure insisted clinging to me.
"Baka! Uncle Kizuato already has too many to worry about, and the two of you wanted to add too!"
Takeo, the second-eldest son chided their plea as he heavily lifting the charcoal basket on his back.
"Then what are you doing?" Nezuko ask.
"Helping of course!"
I sigh inside and interrupt them. "Okay, you can all come with me if you're mother permitted it."
With how weak humans here, even what they call samurai was nothing to me as I babysit the children, so bringing them was not a hassle at all.
Their eyes glowed in star and insisted on their mother's permission to come with me.
She accepted and the children helped each other to lift one basket to help me which I stop them to do.
"You're help was really so much, Kizuato. I don't know how we can pay you."
Kie said with an apologetic smile on her face.
"Its nothing, Kie. Don't worry about trivial matters."
Besides, I am earning something here which you can't call a true "Samaritan".
"But still, thank you very much for your kindness."
Her smile radiated on her kind face.
Even though her looks were not top-notch, she enforces it with her loving smile and aura.
And I'm not gonna lie, she was really charming with her smile.
I felt a look towards me and I turned around who is it.
It was Tanjuro, looking at me with his signature smile.
I clicked my tongue in annoyance and start walking after I bid my farewell on Kie.
Me, loving someone?
I couldn't even make them happy as I neglected their feelings, and now, I have guts to love someone that I didn't love.
That'll be a shame as a man like me.
Or a lowly-life form if I would be discrete.
