Chapter 5: The Houses

After Amara received her first wand that cost 5 Dragot or $539.45, she heard Ollivander still selling his wand at seven galleons or £366.39. After that Amara also realized the importance of having a wand holder like her uncle Joshua. So in her desperate attempt to haggle her uncle to also buy her one, she got one that looks like a holder of a sword in broken white color. This small shopping for her school necessities turns out to be massive. From wand holder to wand care set -Amara bought five of them as she reason with her uncle it was for the whole one year she is going to Hogwarts-; from her first-year course books to a whole seven years, Amara insists it was better to buy all of them now than buying things like that when school season started. The shop will be full of first-year students of Ilvermorny or Castelobruxo, as it is said that Dragonite Mall has an entrance for students both in North America and South America.

In Dragonite Mall not only they purchase with Dragot and Sprink but also Chrysós, Asími, and lastly Broúntzos for students and people of South American. Chrysós, Asími, and Broúntzos are the currency of South American wizarding folk it means gold, silver, and bronze in order. Even their value is the same as Britain's currency Galleon, Sickel and Knut. 1 Chrysós means 17 Asímis and 17 Asímis means 493 Broúntzos'. Because of this reason, Dragonite Mall has its own Gringotts Wizarding Bank as the place to exchange No-Maj currency either to Dragot or Chrysós. It is a known fact that Gringotts is entirely worked on by goblins and the only wizarding world bank.

==========

Waiting for July 15th to come was very tiring for Amara. Not only she has to play by herself because her eyes are so weird to a No-Maj. Because of that, she can only play with the same fellow from his uncle's friend and their family. Weasley's family for an instant is really quick in integration. Not even five minutes her father, Alexander Hill, and this head of the family met, they already hit it off like some old school friends.

'Maybe this is my chance to ask about Hogwarts.' thought Amara.

"Um… Hello, my name is Amara Hill. Can I ask you a few questions about Hogwarts?" Amara asking a boy around 2 or 3 years above her age.

"Hello, the name's Jordan Weasley and yes I can tell you about it," Jordan smiled at Amara.

"What is it like to attend Hogwarts?"

"It's very exciting every day, we have good food, Hogsmeade Village and we have quidditch cup," said the boy with the health skin color of a tan.

"Are you in your house's quidditch team?"

"Yeah I'm one of the chasers for Gryffindor last year, this year I have to make another trial to become our team official chaser or I'll be kicked out of the team, even first year can also sign up if they want to compete against senior who is in the team."

"Even though you're already an official member last year? Is it in the tradition of Gryffindor to let the first year in the trial?"

"No. It wasn't only us that hold that tradition, nowadays all houses also do the same. Some first year was found to be very excellent, prodigy if I may add despite his age. He is the second after 'Harry Potter' cause he was officially the seeker of Slytherin."

"So you're in Gryffindor, how about other houses? Sorry as I only know about Hogwarts from reading this book by Bathilda Bagshot, I still don't understand what characteristics of four houses have in detail. Can you tell me?"

"Which one if I may add?" Jordan tilting his head.

"Hogwarts: A History," answered Amara.

"Ooh... sorry but I never read it. I'm just gonna directly narrative what I know to you. There are four houses in Hogwarts, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and lastly Slytherin. The first house I'm gonna tell you is my house Gryffindor. Gryffindor is one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and was founded by Godric Gryffindor. Gryffindor chooses students possessing characteristics he most valued, such as courage, chivalry, and determination. Its emblematic animal is a lion and their colors are scarlet and gold also our House's ghost is Nearly Headless Nick." Jordan paused to continuing what's he knows about Gryffindor.

"Our Common Room is located in one of the castle's towers named Gryffindor Tower because we reside in it, the entrance to the common room which is located on the seventh floor and is guarded by an oil painting of the Fat Lady, who is garbed in a pink silk dress. Her singing voice terrible by the way. You have to say the right password before The Fat Lady can let you in."

"Is the fat lady sometimes gives you trouble?" Amara asked as Jordan kind of become gloomy.

"Yes, she has. Do you know when it's already midnight after astronomy class, we were so sleepy and just want to sleep on our bed and she won't let us in just because her singing voice can't break the wine glass."

"So what happened in the end?"

"She just smashed the glass on the wall behind her and said it was because of her amazing voice."

"AHAHAHAHAHAHA..." Both of them laughing out loud because of the hilarious situation at that time.

"How about Hufflepuff?"

"Hufflepuff is the most inclusive among the four houses, they value hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in magic in its members. Its founder was the medieval witch Helga Hufflepuff. Their emblematic animal is a badger, and yellow and black are its colors. Also, The Fat Friar is the house's patron ghost."

"Then how about their Common Room?"

"The Hufflepuff dormitories and common room have never been seen by outsiders and is the only house with repelling devices in case of intruders. They are accessed through a pile of large barrels, found stacked in a shadowy stone recess on a right-hand side corridor near the kitchens. The barrel two from the bottom, middle of the second row, will open if tapped correctly. If you're wrong, there is a case when a student above my year who's trying to sneak up to Hufflepuff Common Room then he wrongly does the tap thing so the result is one of the other lids bursting off, drenching the impostor -the boy- in vinegar." Both of them cringed at their imagination and the smell of vinegar.

"The Ravenclaw house's founder was the medieval witch Rowena Ravenclaw. Members of this house are characterized by their wit, learning, and wisdom. The emblematic animal symbol is an eagle, and blue and bronze are its colors. Though many from other houses regarding them as nerd or bookworm." The last sentence Jordan said in a whisper.

"The house's ghost is the Grey Lady, otherwise known as the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw, Helena Ravenclaw. The Ravenclaw common room is in one of the castle's towers named Ravenclaw Tower. Unlike the other common rooms in the school, a logical riddle given by a bronze eagle-shaped knocker must be answered to enter their common room."

"According to one of the past prefects, 'Ravenclaws are so competitive when it comes to academic success that they are known to backstab each other, and likely other students to get top marks.'" He said with a shudder.

"And at last Slytherin, even though in the past we are like fire and water, now we somehow became best of a best friend with some of them."

"Ahem..." Jordan clearing her throat.

"Slytherin is one of the four houses, founded by Salazar Slytherin. In establishing the house, Salazar instructed to pick students who had a few particular characteristics he most valued. Those characteristics include cunning, resourcefulness, and ambition. Many Slytherin students tend to clique together, often acquiring leaders, which further exemplifies Slytherin's ambitious qualities. The founder highly valued and favored pure-blood students and the Sorting Hat admitted that it can be a factor when being Sorted. Students of any blood status can now be placed in the house. However, a Muggle-Born student from that house is considered to be quite rare."

"What is Muggle-Born?"

"Ah! That's what we call No-Maj-born in America. Muggle-born are expressions referring to witches or wizards who are born to two non-magical parents. Their magical abilities do not seem to be at all affected by their Muggle parentage. Many Muggle-borns have been among the most talented witches and wizards of their age, such as Lily Evans who was Harry Potter's mother, and Hermione Granger who is the Ministry of Magic in Britain now."

"Wow... they are so incredible, can I become strong and successful like them too if I go to Hogwarts?"

"Maybe someday, Amara."

"Shall we continue?" asked Jordan "Yes, please!"

"The Slytherin common room is in the dungeons of Hogwarts Castle and underneath the Black Lake. Because of this, the light in the common room is green. To enter the Slytherin common room one must merely speak aloud the current password in front of a stretch of a damp stone wall; once the word is uttered a concealed stone door will slide aside leaving a rectangular hole in the wall leading to the Slytherin common room."

"After your story about the houses, I think I want to go to Gryffindor. For Hufflepuff I don't have the patience; for Ravenclaw, I don't want someone backstabbing me; as for Slytherin, I just feel I don't belong there." Amara said her reason with conviction.

"If you want to come to Gryffindor, the Sorting Hat can help you as it takes your opinion as well in its consideration to which house you will be part of."

"Really? Thank you, Jordan."

"You're welcome," smiled Jordan.
