Chapter 4: Chapter 4

The stars were out now, the moon was full and not a trace of cloud was in the night sky. Nightlight and the pack have traveled through the giant plain field that was painted on the last landmark they saw. The stars in the shape of the wolf's head were right in front of them, which meant that they were going the right way. As the days went by, the pack became more and more confident on their journey. With no one to challenge them, it made their journey very easy. The crickets were chirping and the frogs were croaking, it was a peaceful night, until Vince barked an alarm.

"I smell someone coming. I can't tell who though." he says sternly. Nightlight turned around and so did the pack. Sure enough, there was something coming, but too small to be a wolf. It moved through the grass quickly as if it was on a scent. Nightlight barked a challenge. A little head poked through the grass, and looked at them. It was Sam, a fox and the Wild Pack's messenger. "Sam...What are you doing here?" Nightlight asks. "I came to do my job." he says soothingly. "I have a message from Alpha."

Nightlight looked at the others, who looked as confused as he was. He looked back at Sam. "We're listening." Sam cleared his throat and began to speak. "Alpha has given me instructions to tell you that he's getting tired and impatient for you. He says pick up the pace, or don't come back at all." Nightlight growled low. "It's not our fault this journey is taking so long. Tell him that if he wanted the collar so badly, then he should have gone to get it himself. Also tell him to buzz off and he can wait for his collar. Whether it's taking too long or not, he can wait."

Sam looked up at him worried. "You really want me to tell him that? I think you'll just make him mad Beta." Before Nightlight could answer, Atlas jumped in. "It doesn't matter. To be honest, everyone here agrees that Nightlight should be our alpha, and not him. I know this because when Nightlight and I were in our old pack, he was going to be the next alpha when the time came. But when our mother was forced to leave to marry Rune and was sacrificed to the cougars of their canyon when he found out about us, he left to start his own. The only reason Bandit is alpha now, is because if you don't follow his orders or do what he tells you to do, he'll simply maul you, or kill you. And on top of that, Solar is dead because of him. He made Solar come to get rid of him. He died because of his illness. Secondly, you don't have to call Bandit Alpha if he's not around. That goes for my brother too. "

Sam looked at Atlas stunned. "Wait...so you're saying Alpha---I mean Bandit, made Solar go with you guys? And he died on the way to The Hidden Forest?" Nightlight nodded sadly. "Not only that, Bandit said to me one day that Solar would infect the whole pack if he wasn't gone. It didn't make any sense." Atlas says. Moon stepped forward next to Atlas. "I think everybody back home will agree with us Sam. Solar shouldn't have come, he should have stayed back home where he would get better by our medics.

To be honest, Bandit makes sure he gets his way, whether we like it or not. So I think we all agree that Nightlight should be our alpha. If what Atlas says about him is true, then he is alpha by our most sacred law. If he was going to be the alpha of his old pack because he was first born, then there's no arguing that he should be our leader." Atlas looked at Moon, who gave a slight smile to him. He nodded, and turned back to Sam. Nightlight cleared his throat as he addressed Sam.

"Now what I want you to do is give Bandit a brief message of what you've been told. And if he gives you another message for us, then come back immediately. We still have half way to go, so you're in no hurry to come back. Okay?" The little fox bowed in a gesture of respect, then barked a humble "As you wish Nightlight" before turning back and walked in the direction he came. Nightlight sat down, raised his hind leg and began scratching long at his ear before lowering it again. "Is it true Nightlight? That you were going to be the next alpha of your pack?" Violet calls. Nightlight simply stood up and turned to face them.

"Yes, I was trained by my mother to lead the pack one day. She said it was in my blood to lead, and that I would be a fine alpha one day and make her proud. She's gone now, but I know she still watches over me." The pack exchanged glances, in shock and awe at what they just heard. Pandora looked at him with a soft and gentle expression on her face. Nightlight smiled at her and added. "If I was your alpha, I wouldn't be leading alone. Pandora would be at my side, helping me lead as well." Everyone turned to Pandora as Sunny walked up to her. "Is he saying that you'd be his alpha female?" she asks.

Pandora nodded. "He is. Nightlight and I would be in it together, and I love him deeply. I'd stop whatever I was doing and go to his aid. He needs me, and I need him. Together, we'd lead the pack without any of you worrying about being demoted or being mauled by doing something stupid or wicked." Nightlight padded up to her and nuzzled her. "And I love you Pandora. So much. You and I would be great leaders. That is...if the pack agrees with me." Nightlight looked at them all. All of their tails wagged and they barked agreements.

Sky stepped forward. "I will only be loyal to you Nightlight. You are the rightful alpha of our pack, so we should all be grateful to you." she bowed in gratitude with her eyes fixed on him. The rest of the pack copied her, and Nightlight looked at them all. He looked at Pandora next to him, and she nodded and smiled. He turned back to the pack, lifted his head and let out his long, deep howl. The other's joined him, and they continued on their journey. Along the way, Nightlight thought about the collar. If he was the true alpha, then the collar would only accept him as the alpha.

A few days had passed, the sun was in the middle of the sky, and the pack were resting under trees to protect themselves from the scorching heat. Nightlight and Pandora were laying next to each other as usual, Atlas and Moon right next to them. A little yip filled the quiet air, and Nightlight's ears perked up. Raising his head, he saw a little figure coming towards them, and he already knew it was Sam. However, he wasn't alone. Behind him, a blue grayish figure moved with stride and rage. Nightlight's fur pricked up ...Bandit.
