Chapter 3: Agent L

In a relatively empty bar playing cheesy EDM music, the young boy who was known as the Silver Thief was quietly sitting alone, taking in the rowdy sights of the drunken crowds on the streets, while he calmly sipped his own cocktail.

This boy, grew up in the northern slums of Paris' ghettos. An orphan who spent most of his early years begging for change to exchange for food at the red cross for cheap, or visiting the library to study on his own, he eventually got the knack of pickpocketing.

The life of most thieves begin as such, however, a lot of them only remain at this level. That wasn't the case with the Silver Thief, a renowned international criminal with an interpol red notice. Over time, stealing was no longer just a way to make money for him. Money was something the Silver Thief did not lack at this moment.

What he lacked was excitement! What he lacked was artistry. For the Silver Thief, the practice of stealing was like pulling off a complicated sequence of performances. He didn't think that running a successful heist was much different from conducting an opera or running a magic show.

Over time, Silver Thief's legend and his mysterious identity and his constantly successful and daring heists had created an underground fandom. Silver Thief was considered the Banksy of the heist industry.

At this moment, this young boy was lost in thought. Today, he suddenly felt that stealing was too easy. The excitement from before... had disappeared.

"I need to do something bigger. Something more daring than anything before." The young boy thought to himself, as his hand tightly clasped the cocktail glass.

At that moment, a beautiful looking woman suddenly appeared and sat down on the young boy's table. The woman appeared to be in her twenties, her eyes shining blue and her dark black hair was cut short. Her face was pale, but there were signs of a tan. The young boy squinted his eye.

"A tan in the depths of a snowing winter in Paris. I'm guessing you just returned from a trip on Australia?" The young man calmly asked the woman. Clearly, the woman seemed to know who he was and he was immediately on guard.

The woman looked slightly shocked, but then burst into an even bigger smile. "I truly cannot underestimate the Silver Thief. You can call me Agent L. I am a representative from MI7."

"MI7? I am aware of MI5 and MI6, but what is MI7?" The young boy asked with shock.

Agent L nodded as if understanding the Silver Thief's baffled appearance. "Those organizations deal with domestic and overseas threats. The threats we deal with are slightly beyond the scope of those two agencies."

Silver Thief raised an eye. He wasn't sure what exactly Agent L meant, but he had a few suspicions. As a globe trotting thief, there was a lot of things that he had seen and some shook the foundations of his understanding. As a pragmatic person, Silver Thief always stayed away from those events because he knew he would be overstepping his bounds otherwise.

"How did you find out who I was?" The young boy finally asked.

"We had infiltrated the shadow mercenary group two months ago. The theft of the diamonds today was a plant to bait you out and track you. Despite this, we didn't expect you to successfully steal the diamonds anyway, however, you eventually handed the diamonds back to us anyway." Agent L calmly explained as she observed the changes in the young boy's eyes. Inwardly, she was stunned by how young this legendary thief was.

"So the entire shadow mercenaries was a puppet organization? If my life hadn't been saved by that bastard, I wouldn't have joined this damned group." The young boy shook his head in dismay.

Agent L spoke again. "We have no interest in revealing your identity. I approach you for a simple reason. I wish to contract you with a job."

"A heist?" The young boy asked in doubt.

"Eventually, but it would depend on your ability." Agent L said.

"I can't possibly commit without knowing the details. A heist requires planning, one can't just perform spontaneously when there are obstacles at every corner." The young boy shook his head.

Agent L nodded appreciatively. "I understand your concerns, thus I'd like you to sign this non disclosure document before I explain the details."

The young boy nodded and took out a pen to sign, however, he was stopped by Agent L. "You can only use this." She handed him an extremely old quill.

The young boy immediately became suspicious. "Why?" He suspected it might be some kind of secret agent poisoning dart.

"You'll understand when you use it." Agent L calmly said.

Eventually curiosity got the best of the boy and he used the quill to sign his name. At that moment, he felt a burning sensation on the back of his hand, and he saw that the quill's ink was actually blood. His blood. He quickly signed the documents and let go of the quill, a slight fear within his heart.

"Just what... is that?" He eventually asked.

"A magic artifact. You are now bound to non disclosure by a blood contract, please do not reveal any details to non authorized personnel in the future, to avoid damaging your mind." Agent L replied.

"Magic artifact?" He mumbled in shock. His worst fears had been confirmed. There really was a supernatural side to this world.

Agent L smiled. "As of now, you can be considered an affiliate consultant with rank 0 clearance. I'll simply let you know that there are mysteries in the world we know little about. Your mission details are here. As is your new cover identity and flight tickets. This chip contains all the necessary information about the target and your task. Take this smart watch, it also functions as a communicator. I will contact you further as time proceeds."

Then Agent L got up and walked away, leaving the bar and disappearing into the street. The Silver Thief quietly looked at the documents, his eyes dazed and his mind reeling from the quill he had just held in his hand and Agent L's warning about revealing this to others.
