Chapter 2: Start

The last week of school for this semester came by fast. The awaited summer vacation of students came and everyone is set to their vacations.

"Hurry up, bro! I'm so excited!" Donte in his floral blue polo shirt and khaki shorts. Extremely in his vacation mode spirits is running around the street. Donte's parent was laughing at the sight of their kid's high spirits. While Jamie couldn't help not to get embarrassed how laid back his friend is when infact yesterday the same guy is dreading how he just got the average mark not to go to summer class.

"Again, Auntie and Aunt. Thank you for bringing me along." Jamie smiled and gratefully send his thanks to the Handerson couple. The two was pleased on how he acts and thank them. Mr. Handerson reached out to Jamie's shoulder.

"Don't worry, Jamie. You're like a son to us. Don't be shy if there's anything we can do or you if you want something." Mr. Handerson told Jamie as he pats Jamie's shoulder. Jamie just smiled and nodded them followed his friend Donte.

"Yow! Check that out!" Donte said as he pulls his sunglasses down and looked at a woman passingby wearing a white one piece swimsuit. Donte looked at the woman's body until she is out of sight while Jamie just looked at the waves of the beach's blue ocean.

"Let's go and be out there! We might find the love of our life there!" Donte said and urges his friend to stand up. He did and took of his shirt to enjoy and cold beach water refreshing everyone from the summer sun.

He was hesitant at first to come, because Jamie's relatives indeed invite him out to spend the vacation at their home. Although upon explaining, they told him that there's no problem with that if it is what he wanted.

He was relieved to know that. After all, ever since the incident 7 years ago, he has always been alone. Thanks to his parents saved up money and non-scheming attitude of his relatives he was able to live out his life. He might be alone from a young age, but he was not maltreated because he was an orphan. Although no one came to his side to take care of him, he manage to do so by budgeting his parents saved up money.

Anyone at this point would have cursed out their life for being alone at a young age, but Jamie understood that this is his fate and there is nothing he should do. He just needs to live out his life. That's all there is.

"Donte! Jamie! Could you please do some errands for me! It seems we forgot some things on the van." Mrs. Handerson called out to the two guys. They swim out the beach and went to their place where they are settled.

"What did we forgot, Mom?" Donte asked as he pat himself dry with a towel. Jamie does too and just listened.

"There should be a white reusable bag that contains the ingredients for one of the dishes I am going to make. You should be able to see it at the back of the van. Could you two boys go get it for me?" Mrs. Handerson said as she is busy skewing meat at the metal rod for her to put on the grill.

"Okay. Will do, is there anything else?" Donte set aside the towel he used at one of the chairs nearby. Jamie saw it and neatly fold it and hanged it to the chair with his is also neatly set aside. Mr. Handerson saw what he did and couldn't help not to smile. He is thinking that despite not being raised by anyone in his teenage years, he learned manners alone. This must be because it is necessary for Jamie to do so because he is alone which then he felt bad.

They only get to know Jamie because of their son Donte who adamantly looked after Jamie after they met 4 years ago. Well, if we're looking, it seems that Jamie was the one who was really taking care of their son.

"Jamie." Mr. Handerson called out. Jamie looked at him then went near.

"Yes, Uncle?" Jamie asked. Mr. Handerson reached out to his pockets and took out the keys for his van and also took a few money bills and gave it to Jamie.

"Donte will probably went ahead without asking me the key, so take this in advance and just mess with him a little." Mr. Handerson said and secretly laughed. Jamie smiled and nodded then he showed the money given to him confused as to what to do with it.

"There's a convenience store down the block near the parking. You guys might want to buy something, okay?" Mr. Handerson smiled and get back on reading his book. Jamie nodded and then Donte grabbed him at his shoulder to go ahead to the parking.

Jamie is just looking at his friend waiting for him to realize that Donte did not asked for the Van's key.

"What?" Donte asked him. Jamie just shrugged and let out a silent sigh. His friend is really impulsive is what he had in mind. Donte was confused but he just smiled and saw their van. He was about to open it when he realized something.

"Oh shoot! I forgot to ask for the keys!" Donte said in despair as he realized his mistake. Jamie laughed silently and hid the keys.

"Well, it is expected of you, haha. Just go and get it back. I'll be here." Jamie said and laughingly consoled his friend. Donte looked at him tired from walking, but think that this is his fault so there's nothing he can do. He nodded then went to walk away. When he was almost gone, Jamie opened the back of the van and found the reusable bag at the side. It contains vegetables and some condiments. Jamie shut the van and locked it. Then walk back and saw the convenience store Mr. Handerson mentioned. Thinking his friend will already be on his way back here tired and will be pissed. He bought two drinks that will help his friend replenish.

Jamie just waited outside with his phone on his hand and not so long, he sees his friend unhappy face looking at him.

"Geez. If you had the key, you should have told me." Donte said panting and sweating as he glares at his friend. Jamie laughed and offered a drink.

"Uncle told me to do so, since it was obvious you'll forget to ask the keys to him. Here's your share and here is the bag." Not caring about his friend's glare. He gave the bag and the drink which Donte still accepted. After resting for a bit, Donte and Jamie walked to go back.

The two is just silently walking back under the summer heat. Jamie looked at his friend and suddenly felt nostalgic. He has been friends with this guy for 4 years now and although he is a handful and childlike most of the time that needed being taken care off. Donte has been the great guy who looked out for him.

"Thank you, Donte." Jamie suddenly said and stopped on his tracks. Donte was walking ahead and then turned around to see Jamie who suddenly gave his thanks.

"Wow! You're suddenly thanking me. Do you feel guilty about earlier?" Donte teased then laughed. Jamie just smiled and looked at his only friend.

"Not really. Just thought that I might have worst as I am now if I didn't met you." Jamie said. Somehow he wanted to say all of this today to his friend. Donte was caught off guard from his somewhat nonchalant friend to say all of this.

"What? You're still the worst you know?" Donte tried to just end it with a joke, but then he smiled.

"Well, as for me. I want to thank you as well. No matter what happens, I will never forget you." Donte said and raised his hands to give his friend a high-five.

"Me too, I won't ----" Jamie was about to answer when he heard a familiar sound. A screeching of rubber against the ground, sound from the friction of car wheels that lost control.

As if time went slow and he was the first one to see the incoming vehicle. It was not directed to him, but to the friend in front of him. In his mind, flashed a memory of where his father jumped up and save his mother by embracing her in the middle of the road when they her mother was about to be hit by a vehicle as well.

He couldn't let this happen again, not to his friend this time. That's why he pushed his legs against the floor and dashed to his friend and using this hands, he pushed him away. There was no time for him to get up and ran away. He just looked at his friend who was shocked at what he did and just smiled.

Jamie was contented this time. He was able to do something. This time he didn't watch at the sides.

------

Before Jamie's body could be hit by the vehicle. The time stopped and everything around stopped moving. The wind, the earth, the fire, the water, everything stopped.

Light slowly enveloped Jamie's body and within a few moments he was gone. There's no single trace of him was left in the place. Not in this place, not in the Handerson family's tent, not in the school, not on his home, not anywhere. He's now gone to this world.

The time started moving again. All the people who witnessed what happened continued with their screams, fleeing, running, and living.

When the vehicle that went rampant on the street was stopped by the house hit. Everyone looked around if there is anyone who was hurt. There are minor scratches from people who hurriedly flee the scene. One guy, a blonde guy opened his eyes and looked at the scene.

He remembered how he was almost hit... but at the moment he was able to save himself. He laughed and checked on his body. He had some scratches but that was it. He took the bags her mom asked her to get. Then hurriedly run back to their tent near the beach.

He once turned back to the truck, he felt like he should be looking for something. He turned back and saw his Father's Van Keys.

"Phew! Thank goodness I didn't forget." He said and picked up the keys then moved on back to his family.
