Chapter 93: Obsidian Endeavor

I stared at the dark tunnel in front of me.

"Why was it necessary for me to dig a tunnel to a lake again? I'm unsure about how this will help me in the slightest." I said, turning around to face the last few feet of dirt between me and the lake.

{Well, we need obsidian, right?} The Gods asked.

"Yeah." I responded, not seeing where they were going with the question.

{We had the amazing idea that instead of bringing the water from a lake to the lava bucket by bucket, why not just bring the whole lake instead.} They explained.

I picked the bridge of my nose and glared at the wall.

"So you want me to essentially relocate an entire lake because it would take too long to get obsidian otherwise." I stated.

{Exactly!} The Gods answered.

I stopped pinching the bridge of my nose and instead facepalmed.

"I don't even know why I even went along with this." I said with a sigh.

{Because you were bored and we gave you a dumb idea?}

I paused for a moment and sighed once more.

"Yeah that sounds about right."

{So are you gonna finish the job?} The Gods asked.

I stayed silent and simply pulled out a bomb.

{We take that as a yes.} They commented.

I threw the bomb, and the Gods spoke once more as the bomb was mid-air.

{And now we let the water through the tunnel. What could go wrong?} They said.

I paused at their words and thought it over.

My eyes widened as soon as I realized what was going to happen, and quickly shifted to a resigned gaze as I realized I wasn't going to be able to avoid the following events.

"Fuck." Was my only response as the bomb blew up the only thing keeping the entirety of the lake out of the tunnel.

{We hope you know how to swim.} The Gods commented with an audible smirk.

And then I was submerged into the current.

I went to say something, but stopped myself before I inhaled some water.

'How the hell did you smirk audibly?' I asked mentally.

{We're the Gods, so logic doesn't apply to us.} They answered.

'I really wish it did.' I thought.

{But then you wouldn't be here right now.}

I attempted to glare, but was unable to due to my eyes currently being closed.

'That does not make me feel any better in the slightest.' I thought in annoyance.

I grimaced as my head impacted one of the walls of the tunnel.

'My opinion on this plan is getting worse by the minute.' I mentally complained.

{This plan is getting better by the minute!} The Gods said happily.

A frown found its way onto my face.

'I forget how much joy you obtain from my suffering.' I thought dryly.

{Of course we enjoy your suffering! You're one of the more entertaining heroes we've had, after all!} The Gods exclaimed in my head.

'Can you speak quieter? Your yelling is making my metaphysical ears ring.'

{We're not even sure you know what that word means.} The Gods commented.

'I don't. But it made it seem like I knew what I'm talking about at least.'

{But you don't.} They answered.

'Oh I know much less th-' I was cut off by another impact with the wall. '-an you think.' I finished.

{You're nearing the end of your tunnel now. It should only take you a few seconds before you're back in the caves.}

'Oh thank god! I don't think I've been so bored in my life.' I said semi-happily.

{Don't forget that you still have to find your way to the obsidian after you're out.}

'Of course I remember the main reason I did this. Do you really think I'm that forgetful?' I asked in a mock-hurt tone.

{You forgot that you got stabbed with a knife seconds after it happened.}

'Hey! That was a while ago.' I retorted.

{It literally happened last night.} The Gods corrected.

'Yes, and that was a while ago.' I replied.

I could feel that the Gods wanted to continue the conversation, but they were cut off by my emergence from the tunnel.

I looked at my surroundings and focused on the pat deeper into the cave, watching as the water rushed past me.

A grin found itself onto my face.

{Are you about to do what We think you're about to do?}

"Good question." I said. "We probably have the same idea."

{Ride the waterslide?} They asked.

"Ride the waterslide." I answered.

{Good to see that we're on the same page.}

I didn't respond, instead opting to jump towards the current of water.

My enjoyment lasted all of 10 seconds, cut short by the reveal of a very steep drop off into a dark abyss.

The main reason I discovered the drop was the fact that I had been flung into the open air by the current, easily a hundred feet above any solid ground.

"I should've seen this coming." I said with a straight face, looking down at the pitch-black abyss.

my flight through the air reached a peak, leaving me hanging in the air for half a second, and I heard the Gods snap their fingers with a laugh.

And then gravity kicked in.

I couldn't help but compare my situation to the old cartoons from the 1900's. All I needed was a sign and I would have been able to act out the scene.

As I fell, I simply pulled out a single hook and waited until the last moment before throwing it.

It hit the wall beside me and all of my momentum was erased, letting me fall to the ground without taking any damage.

"Well that was dangerous." I commented offhandedly.

{But it was more fun than it was dangerous.} The Gods added.

"It absolutely was." I agreed with a smile.

I looked over to the raging waterfall next to me and moved my eyes along the path of the water.

"Next stop: obsidian!" I exclaimed happily, excited to almost be done with one of the two requirements for better equipment.

And so I headed deeper into the caves, following the currents of the water.

It took only a few minutes of walking (and falling) for me to come upon a layer of obsidian the water had created.

"Finally." I said, glad to have finally obtained the component needed. "Now all I need is the hellforge..."

I was 2/3rds of the way to upgrading my gear.
