Chapter 68: Sleepless Night

The day had gone by relatively peacefully (If you ignore most of the day), and it had finally become nighttime.

I laid on my bed, staring at my ceiling and trying to fall asleep. Sadly my mind wouldn't let me rest so easily.

I stared at the ceiling for 20 minutes, trying my best to fall asleep with no success. So I decided on the next best thing and got up.

It was time to go for a walk.

I walked towards my window and looked outside, observing the night scenery.

'Seriously, what is it with all these zombies?'

I was contemplating where all the zombies came from when an eye decided to say hi.

*Thud*

If it was me before all of this, I would have most likely jumped back and yelled in surprise.

But now I just looked at the eye that crashed into the window, disinterested in it.

I pulled out my sword and stabbed the grotesque eye, watching it dissolve into dust.

'Things really have escalated quickly, huh?'

{All these events tended to have a lack of breaks. You had no time to even contemplate your future, let alone your past.}

I looked out the shattered window once more, watching the living dead shamble by.

'I guess this was a welcome change, then.'

{Possibly.}

I decided that I should begin my trek, as the night wasn't going to pass by any faster without me doing something.

I leaped out of the broken window, taking shards of glass from the already destroyed pane. I plummeted to the ground from the second-floor window

I didn't even try to stop my fall, as I knew that this was nowhere near enough to injure me greatly, let alone kill me.

'All this running and fighting has given me a better idea of how strong I am I guess. Never realized just how well I knew my own limits...'

{We know them well, so we imparted you the knowledge of them as well.}

'I guess I can thank you for that then.'

{You've really mellowed out compared to before...}

I looked up to the sky, staring at the moon in the sky.

'I'll most likely be back to my normal personality in the morning, and we'll be back to our usual feud.'

{You seem like a completely different person... I like this calmer you better though.}

I smiled at the words of the Gods and continued to stare at the moon.

'This is just how I am when I'm sad. Contemplative and mellowed out.'

I started to remind myself of everything that has happened after I arrived in this world.

'Quite a lot has happened this month... some good, some excruciatingly bad.'

I looked back down to the forest and continued walking.

'Things never seem to get boring, do they?'

{If they did, we would consider ourselves failures.}

'I see that your priorities never change.'

{Haven't for a loooooong time.}

'How long?'

{We lost count after the first billion years.}

'Okay. Very long then.'

I continued walking in a random direction, not having a set destination in mind.

Several minutes of walking later, I found myself in a grove of gigantic blue and white mushrooms.

{It appears our resident truffle has been busy.}

'Yes they have.'

I walked deeper into the grove, looking at the mushrooms that covered every open space in the area.

"I was not expecting any visitors." A familiar voice spoke from behind me.

"I needed some time to lament all the things I had lost, so I went for a walk. Long story short, I wandered into this place."

The truffle looked at me, with amusement clear on their face.

"Sounds like something you would do. Well then, are you enjoying the view?"

I looked around once more, taking in the full scene.

Smaller mushrooms coated the ground, giving it a bright blue glow, while the larger mushrooms towered over the surroundings, easily reaching higher than the tallest tree.

"It's a wondrous sight." I spoke honestly, admiring the scenery.

The truffle 'smiled', and waved at me to follow them.

I adhered to their request, and walked with them. The truffle decided to start up a conversation while we walked, starting off with some information about the glowing mushrooms.

"These mushrooms are quite picky, yet they are also similar to weeds. They only choose one type of soil, yet the moment they get planted they explode into action..."

The truffle grabbed a handful of mud and a small mushroom and placed the mushroom on the handful of mud.

I watched as the mushroom began to sprout roots at an alarming speed, wrapping the mud in its roots. And then the roots began to recede, leaving a blue, grassy covering on the ball of mud.

"They stick their spores to any mud they can get their hands on, spreading quick enough to make places like this in days."

We walked for a few more minutes, chatting about random things until we reached a clearing.

"Welcome to my relaxation spot." The truffle spoke, still walking towards the center of the clearing.

"Is there supposed to be something here, or...?" I questioned, genuinely curious.

"This place is whatever I want it to be since I am a truffle, after all."

I watched as he waved his hand and grew mushrooms all around the area, only to begin gathering them.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Using my skills correctly." He responded flatly.

I felt offended by that statement for some reason, even though I had no clue why.

The truffle then proceeded to grab a handful of mushrooms and grow them into a set of chairs with a table.

'Interesting.'

"Come over and sit down, they're not poisonous." The mushroom said, clearly joking around.

I heeded their request and sat down in one of the chairs. They were surprisingly comfortable.

"Tell me about your woes." Shiitake said, clearly trying to be dramatic.

"I have been torn away from my home, losing everyone I knew and cared for all at once. I only realized this now and I have realized just how much I miss them." I stated, completely honest.

The truffle looked at me, the lighthearted gaze having been discarded without hesitation.

They were one of the few who knew what it felt like to lose everything, and I was hoping for some good advice.

The truffle looked me in the eyes and said a simple statement.

"Be positive."

"Huh? That's it?" I questioned, startled by the simplicity of the advice.

"You don't need to worry about not seeing them again since you're going to see them again someday. Just believe in the best scenario while preparing for the worst. That way you won't be so disappointed when either scenario occurs." He spoke seriously.

I looked at him like he had two heads.

"That has to be some of the weirdest advice I have ever been given." I stated honestly.

Seriously, who the hell just tells someone to expect the best and prepare for the worst while they are trying to cope?

Shiitake does.

'I should've expected this from someone who is as blunt as a wooden club.'

"It was how I avoided insanity during my stay with the crab."

I was surprised at how long Shiitake had kept his optimism since he was in that cave for over a century.

I spent the rest of that night talking with Shiitake, relaxing in the forest of mushrooms.

I felt that it was a night well spent.

This was more of a filler chapter since I may or may not have completely forgotten about Shiitake (I'm not even sure that's their name, to be honest.)

Anyways, I hope this chapter was okay. (I had a whole plan set up for the chapter but the whole plot for the chapter was FUBAR about halfway through so I just went with a random line of thought.)
