Chapter 4: Why Are There Zombies!? (And an Eye?!)

As I finished the windows, I immediately realized how dark it was.

And the moment I saw some shadows of varying size shambling through the dark forest.

Since I had no idea what those were, I asked my local guide, Jacob, what those were out there.

"Those are zombies."

"Why are there zombies!?"

"because it is Nighttime."

"That's the reason?!"

"Yes."

"Why?!"

"Because magic is way beyond the realm a mortal mind can comprehend."

And it was at that moment that I realized that I was not getting any sleep tonight. But not because of fear... No, i need some kind of stress relief from having to deal with this world and its bull****.

And I just found what I considered to be a very good horde of punching bags, which means I get some stress relief by killing some zombies. And I did just that.

I left my house, at least remembering to close the door behind me, and headed to the nearest animated corpse.

Now whoever came up with the idea that zombies are slow should die in shame, because these guys were not slow at all (even when shambling along with one good leg). They could easily keep up with me walking at full speed, somehow even managing to outpace me.

Since I knew that they are not as slow as stereotypical zombies, I knew that they might also be more durable as well. Which turned out to be true, since hitting one felt like whacking a wet sandbag.

At that realization, I couldn't help but show a smile. I am finally getting the stress relief that I deserved, and boy am I happy that I can let off some steam.

And so I charged at the nearest zombie, slashing at its neck in hopes of decapitating it. It worked a little too well, since while hitting it with blunt force felt like a sandbag, slashing made them feel like wet clay. I cleanly decapitated the zombie with little resistance besides the obviously rotted bones in its body.

Now that I realized that my sword was so effective; I looked back at the zombie I had decapitated, and paled at what I saw. While the zombie looked normal while in one piece, the insides looked like somebody had their entire body replaced with an infected cut. Its blood had turned charcoal black, while its flesh had turned a sickening yellow underneath its pale green skin, which doesn't sound so disturbing if you ignore the fact that all of it was pulsing like a slug that had salt poured on it.

Since the other zombies were starting to get closer, I gladly switched my focus away from the grotesque sight and onto the approaching threats.

Since decapitation seemed so effective, I decided that it would be my main strategy of killing for these zombies. But before I could engage the zombies; I noticed something flying straight at me, which I tried to identify to the best of my abilities. As it approached, I immediately realized what it was.

A giant floating eyeball. And by giant, I mean GIANT. The thing was easily twice the size of my head, which is very concerning when you consider that it is just an eyeball.

Now Jacob did 'explain' the zombies to me, but I had no idea about this 'giant eyeball thingy', so I did the first thing that came to mind...

And punched it.

Now, I expected to feel some pain when I punched it, but instead all I felt was a wet forearm. At this point, my mind came into focus again, and saw a giant eyeball impaled on my arm, which is as uncomfortable to see as it is to feel. It felt as if I was being pressurized on all sides of my forearm, kind of like being forced into a hole that is a little smaller than you are. I immediately thought back to the first zombie I had killed, and realized why it felt like that, so I did the first thing that came to mind for a second time.

And used both my arms to try and rip it off my arm.

Either the eyeball was extremely weak (which I highly doubt), or I am inexplicably strong, since the thing pretty much exploded from how much force I had put into tearing it away from my arm. That sight is probably something I will never forget, because I had a front row seat to the show, as well as a seat at ground zero of the 'explosion'. The eyeball went everywhere, including my mouth which was open from the utter shock of seeing a giant eyeball. Now that I think about it, I really do NOT like the taste of giant eyeball.

Giant eyeball tastes like an expired mix of cheese and bacon, which would probably go together well in any other state than rotten. I'm also pretty sure it is poisonous since it feels like my mouth is on fire right now. So I tried to spit it out, which ended up looking like some image of a guy spitting in the ground while being slowly surrounded by zombies. the latter part I did not realize until about a second ago. (yay me.)

So putting off the part where I ingested an obviously poisonous substance for the moment, I decided to focus on culling the horde of zombies who are currently surrounding me. As I looked around, I began to notice certain types of zombies: bald zombies (Just picture a zombie that got scalped), pincushion zombies (Arrow pincushion), swamp zombies (Covered in some sort of plant), and the weirdest of them all: slime zombies (Literally wearing a slime on their head). And they all came in different sizes (small [5']/large [7']).

I decided to focus on the larger zombies first, since they are more likely to pose a threat. I decided to stick to my 'old' habit of decapitation to deal with them for now, which worked like a charm.

As I was killing the zombies, I moved on to the smaller ones, only to notice that one of the zombies had dropped a shackle, which was, well... glowing faintly. I decided to pick it up after eliminating this horde.

After killing all the zombies, I looked around expecting to see a field full of undead corpses, but instead only saw the corpses of the recently killed zombies. As I noticed this, I decided to focus on one of the corpses of the zombies. It was slowly disintegrating into a pitch black dust, leaving behind only a few coins copper and silver, something that seems a little too weird to be natural.

I completely forgot the fact that I am currently poisoned due to the intense confusion generated from a zombie turning into currency.

Putting aside the ever increasing number of questions in my mind, I decide to finally pick that weird shackle up. As I picked it up, I could only think one thing at that moment:

'What are you?'

And at that moment, a screen not too different from my inventory popped up, surprising me. Although when I saw what the box contained, I was even more surprised.

To be continued...
