Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Weightlessness

 Em

I remove my head just as Sam's wings burst out into the chill air. I breathe in, absorbing the sight of them. Where her wings meet her skin, the scales blend from her skin tone to a white, maybe as white as my scales. They sparkle in the evening sun. When they reach the tip of the vertebrae, the end of her wings, they become speckled with blue and purple. Just like mine. I wonder why her wings are like mine. Maybe, our bond is involved. I'm speechless, but it's not me, it's Sam. I look at her. My Dragon Heart mark burns.

Are you alright, Sam? I ask. A few minutes pass without her answering and I start to become concerned. Just as I started to say something, she turns gently, I'm guessing not to hurt her large wings that she's new too. She looks at me, a smile painted on her face.

I'm not crazy right? I have wings… on my back?..., she says quietly. I chuckle, releasing all the tension from my body. I lower my head to help her stand, and she embraces my muzzle suddenly. I stop moving, she caught me off guard. I stay perfectly still, a few seconds later, without saying anything, she lightly presses on my muzzle so she stands. I sit on my haunches watching her as she explores her wings, she looks at me and giggles. I smile.

They suit you… Her wings, they gracefully move in the fresh air. She looks at them again.

But how am I supposed to fly if I can't move them? As she says this, her wings move to open a bit, it seems that she didn't notice. I chuckle.

What's so funny? Em?!... She sounds upset at me but I couldn't help it. I smile at her.

You already did!  She looks astonished as she looks at her wings and they move openly. She explodes in hysterical laughter, it startles me and I tense up. I giggle, soon turning into laughter. We both crack up for a short while. As we calm down, I explain.

They move with your emotions… Sometimes you control them like your, claw… or… I look at her, waiting for her to name it for me. She raises it and wiggles her own claws.

It's called a hand, these…  she wiggles them again, are fingers

I lift my paw and wiggle my claws as she did. I smile and giggle, getting back to the point.

Anyway, when you're new to them, they move when you don't want them to. But when you're more familiar with them existing. You're able to move them like your… hand.  That word… It's so foreign to me. I'm excited to learn even more. She giggles, slowly walking to the edge of the cliff, I follow her. I notice that her hands start shaking slightly as she admires the empty air in front of her.

You alright? I start feeling the excitement and anticipation coming off her like the heat emanating from a fire. She looks at me, a smile painted on her face, a glimmer in her eyes. Her eyes are bright blue now, they're the color of ice, shimmering in the morning sun, as it drips water, barely shifting the soft snow under the trees. I could become lost in those beautiful eyes, if I don't pay attention, time can pass so quickly while in that beautiful oblivion. Her eyes seem to look into your soul, your thoughts, your life, everything that has happened in your past and they seem to read everything that is going to happen to your future.

Emberlynn! She exclaims in my mind. I shake my head and look at her sheepishly.

I apologize, what did you say? I got distracted. I try to quickly find an excuse for looking at her for so long.

I said I'm more than ready to fly, but I'm kind of scared.  She says, smiling. I smile and laugh.

It's just instinct, you will find that you'll be able to get it.

As I say this, I walk to the edge, my talons curling over the edge. I look at her to do the same, she slowly walks to the edge, hesitant to look down. I feel fright sneak into my mind and seep into my body. I breathe in deeply to calm myself and I notice that she does the same. I slowly open my wings, I look at her to give her good advice.

Sometimes, she looks at me, I start to tilt forward, it's better to just...fall.

I start feeling that familiar weightlessness as I fall to the river that I didn't notice was right under the cliff. I hear Sam yell my mind in fear. The wind rushes through the ridges in my scales. I look past my shoulders to see if she had jumped yet.

Sometimes a push helps too… I say as I bend my body to use the momentum to go back up, I make a loud grunt as I swoop right past her, I hear her scream and I turn my body to stay what she's doing. I look down at her and I see her body in the air, but her wings aren't out the right way.

Emberlynn! Help me!!! I hear her yell, then I realize, my heart feels like it falls out of my body, I had to make a decision in a moment, it could change our futures, I don't know how I didn't notice that she's falling!
