Chapter 14: Bastille
We trooped in to the shuttle bay. Marching in step Mom on my right Dad on my left each holding a hand marching in step, me having a blast doing the same but jumping between steps, as my legs were too short.
Inside the bay we watched as the drone towing a battered survival pod entered in the bay. Mom used her wrist computer to interface with the drone to bring the pod closer, before having it detach and return to the drone bay for servicing.
We gathered around the pod examining it. There were no view ports. There was however a lot of blaster scoring on the pods armor at the base we found the mechanism for opening up the pod. It had a little scoring from glancing small arms fire. With a little jury rigging of the control pad we were able to open up the pod. First some retaining pins retracted allowing the thruster mount to swing out of the way followed by a door opening. Once out of the way we were able to see inside and saw several stasis bays, but only one of them was occupied. It was a 4 year old girl. I'm thinking to my self 'Bastille looks so cute' she was laying there in beige and brown garb, with some kind of head set over her head. Then the different screens and light began to turn on and off. Un till we heard a message.
"EMERGENCY POWER AT 3%. UNABLE TO WAKE OCCUPANT. TOTAL POWER FAILURE IN 15 MINUETS. LIFE SUPPORT AT 1% 10 MINUETS TO COMPLETE FAILURE. PLEASE EVACUATE OCCUPANT BEFORE CONNECTING EXTERNAL POWER."
And then it was quiet. Mom got one of the medical droid that were loitering around out side to examine Bastille and hook her up to its onboard life support before placing her on a hover Gurney and taking her off to medical. Dad had a Gonk droid come over and used an onboard power cable to hook the pod up to power. I then saw the headset that Bastille was wearing spark to high hell. Then a console access port fell open and a data storage device popped out of the housing. I grabbed it and brought it to Mom.
"Well this could be useful. Here is a lesson on cyber security. Never hook potentially dangerous or foreign items up to your main systems. Lets go to the lab."
We headed to the lab by way of medical.
I saw the doc droid and asked a question.
"Hey Doc how's she doing?"
Ah, Hello Young Starwalker. This patient is doing well. At this time I am stabilizing her condition. Her body is currently suffering from a mild case of malnutrition, and a case of hyper sleep sickness. I should have her conscious in a day or three. I will have a better estimate in a few hours. Is there anything else I can help you with?"
"Thanks Doc, not at this time. We'll see you later." I waved at Doc as Mom and I walked towards the lab.
Inside the lab Mom headed over to a console that stood alone with several emitters and containment shields with what looks like an EMP device.
"As you can see Eddie this is Moms Data Extraction Device with Multi-purpose Analog to Digital hookups or Mom's DEaD MAD. I only have to use this when ever I get data packets from an external source. It only gets fun when someone attempts to hack or introduce viruses and other bugs. I then get to see what it does. I then take it apart and study it. Some of the real bad ones get a returned to sender order with a few tweaks. Those are a lot of fun when the succeed. And when they don't I usually get a bouquet of roses and several prime choice Nerf stakes." she looks in to the distance with a shiver inducing smile. "Good times" then back to her more casual demeanor. "Now lets see what is on this thing."
She places the D.S.D. on the console and hooks it up with universal lead. She then steps out of the circle and flips a breaker. You then see light begin to light up and relays firing off. In front of my Mom is another screen that is getting the results from the first.
"Well...
It's a message for us, a message for her, and a biography. Other than that its clean. There is absolutely nothing else on it. Which in its self is odd. Usually you would include an access logger at least and something that tracks if the content was changed. But there is nothing like that included. So either this was done by neophyte with no knowledge about data security or they didn't want/mind not having any security features."
(In another place and time a portly and balding man who is watching TV sneezes. "Hey you need to clean this place its getting dusty." he called out over his shoulder. A disembodied middle finger shows up in front of his face before disappearing.)
"So what does the message say?"
"The one for us say- 'Please take care of my Daughter, she is all I have left.' the message for her says nearly the same thing- 'Welcome Daughter to your future. Its not pretty but it is the best I could do. As you are reading this I both succeeded and failed. The pirates that were attacking us paid dearly, as I am not there it means we did as well. Be safe my daughter and may the Force be with you."
"Well that was an odd affectation. You know Eddie, the people who use that ending are usually Jedi or rebels fighting for others freedom. Those who are Dark arts practitioners don't use that particular message end. So here is a hint for you. If they end a message to you with 'May the force be with you' then 19 times out of 20 they are an upright force user. If they don't its 50/50."
"That will be a useful piece of information when I go out on my trial. If you don't mind Mum I'm going to go sit with the girl for a bit."
"Alright sweetie you go and do that."
I ran off to see Bastille.
"Hello young master."
"Hiya Doc. How is she doing?"
"She is doing adequate. My estimate has not changed."
"Do you mind if I just sit with her for a bit?"
"Not at all, pleas be my guest."
