Chapter 434: Genuine, nice, kind people
"Are you sure Miss Yu?" Xiao Hai asked, even as he got out to open the door for Chen. She nodded as she got out. "My apartment is barely a five minute walk from here. But it will take half an hour if you insist on taking the car in. I will be fine. It's quite late, you should go back. Your office hours ended long ago." she said, shouldering her bag, which was heavy with her laptop.
Yu Chen had visited the Mo mansion after she Kio. She had found aunty Mo home, but uncle Mo had had an important business meeting, so he wasn't there. Chen had decided to wait for him, she didn't have much else to do anyway. Once uncle Mo had come home, he had insisted Chen stay for dinner. And that was why she had ended up being so late.
Chen gave a smile and a bow to Xiao Hai as goodbye and started walking in the direction of her apartment.
She was surprised when he caught up with her the next instant. "I will walk you back. It's basic courtesy, regardless of my job. Besides, five minutes isn't much." he said in a way of explanation and shrugged.
Yu Chen shook her head with a smile as they walked forward. Si Xia surely did hire good employees, not only competent, but genuine, kind, nice people.
"Say Mr. Xiao, how do you find working for Mr. Si?" Chen spoke, trying to make idle conversation. Xiao Hai shrugged and replied, "It's better than most. He is a good employer and a good person. He pays people appropriately and treats them nicely. Or nicely enough." Yu Chen stifled a laugh at the last sentence. "Nicely enough?" she prompted, putting special emphasis on the second word.
Chen was sure she saw a hint of a smile pass over Xiao Hai's lips as he opened his mouth to answer, but she was distracted by something else behind him.
Yu Chen barely had the time to let out a gasp and Xiao Hai couldn't even react when three burly men came up behind him. All of them whipped out large, deadly looking knives. One of them kept the knife at Xiao Hai's throat and the second one placed his knife at Chen's back. The third one made sure that no one was paying any attention to them as they ushered the two into a side alley.
Yu Chen was scared dead but her mind was working more sharp than ever. She looked at the men, they seemed big and strong, but also stupid and slow. She could overpower one with difficulty, and Xiao Hai could probably take one. But there were three of them. Her best bet would be to give these men what they wanted, if this was a simple mugging attempt.
If it was something else, Chen shuddered to think of it. She tried to discreetly reach for her phone but the one pointing his knife at her saw the motion. He painfully twisted her hand behind her back and a wince escaped her mouth. "Hands where I can see them." he spat out, and Chen had no option but to obey as his knife pressed closer to her back.
Once they were in the alley, safely hidden from view of anyone on the main road, the third one, who was leading them, turned around.
