Yu Chen shook her head and picked up her phone. She needed to talk to someone, the loneliness was making her mad. It was almost eating her inside.
Yu Chen opened her contact list and muttered to herself as she looked over them,
"Xia? Maybe not. Hua? She's right here. Zenghai? Don't want to disturb him at work.
Kio? I doubt he'll answer. Sam? Oh the hell not!...." Yu Chen stopped as she stared at Mian's number. She had been her best friend since always, but what had happened to the two of them. Chen sighed as she called her. As expected, the number was out of network coverage area.
Chen sighed and scrolled through the list again. She finally found what her heart was looking for and hit dial.
The call connected after four rings and Yu Chen whispered, "Mummy?"
"Chen? What's wrong? Did something happen?" Mrs. Yu's worried voice came from the other end.
Yu Chen forced out a chuckle, "Why do you think something's wrong? Can't I call you just to talk?"
Mrs. Yu was still worried as she said, "Sure you can. It's just that...you call me mummy only when you're troubled."
Yu Chen blinked. That was true. She did not know when she had picked that up. Actually, Chen had not realised she said that until her mom pointed it out.
"So? What's bothering you?" Mrs. Yu's voice was heard again.
Yu Chen shook her head as she said, "Nothing mom. Just I've been a bit stressed lately."
Mrs. Yu: "Why? Has something been bothering you? Make sure to eat properly and wear lots of warm clothes. You are so thin now that....."
Mrs. Yu instantly went into her mom mode and Chen heard her quietly, her heart filling with peace, the uneasiness draining out of her.
"Say Chen? You're coming back for new year, right?" Mrs. Yu asked.
"Yeah." Yu Chen began, but her voice cracked. She cleared her throat and said, "Yeah mom. I'll be there. Don't nag please." Chen had not noticed that tears were spilling out of her eyes until she had to speak and her voice cracked.
Mrs. Yu was silent for a moment and Chen said, "Mom, I have to go now. I'll call you back later."
Mrs. Yu said, "Yeah sure. And Chen?"
"Hmm?" Yu Chen asked. "You really are happy right?"she asked.
Yu Chen was taken aback by this sudden question. She could mask her sadness in front of everyone else, but her mother had the unique talent of figuring it out.
"Of course mom. What brought this on?" Chen replied, still being stubborn and trying to act strong.
Mrs. Yu: "Well, it's just.....You know what, never mind. Eat lots and stay healthy. And Chen? Whenever you feel like you need a break, come right home. We'll always be here for you."
Yu Chen replied with an assent sound from the back of her throat. She could not manage anything else. She knew she would break down if she even tried to say one word.
After disconnecting the call, Yu Chen sat silent for quite some time, composing herself and taking deep breaths.
Just when she was in complete control of her emotions, Chen's head snapped towards the door as she heard a knock.
