Si Xia came into view, descending the stairs, frowning, and..... shirtless!!!!!
Realisation suddenly hit Chen on the back of her head with an almost physical impact.
She stared from the woman before her to Si Xia, who seemed to be in a really foul mood.
As Chen stared at him, Xia's eyes met hers.
The two stared into each other's eyes for a few minutes, Chen seeming to get lost in those as black as the universe and Xia getting lost in a grassland fresh with dew.
The reverie was broken when Xia suddenly looked away and his face contorted into one of such agony that Chen felt her heart squeeze.
As she looked at him, Chen felt that he had seen him like this before, somewhere, sometime. But when? She could not put her finger on it. This stern Si Xia that seemed to be masking a sea of sadness seemed like something she remembered from a dream.
Yu Chen shook her head to rid herself of the dizzying feeling that the realisation had made her feel.
It took Chen some time to swallow back her tears and make sure her voice would not break when she spoke. By the time she was done, Xia was standing right in front of her, beside the woman, frowning.
"Xia I...I...." Chen stammered when her phone suddenly rang.
Thinking that it might be Hua or Zenghai, Chen decided to let it ring. But Si Xia's irritated voice came, "Stop that noise. Accept the call."
Yu Chen took out her phone and put it to her ear without even looking at the caller ID.
"Hua? Zenghai? I'm fine. Don't...." Chen's voice trailed off as Sam's voice came from the other end, "Huh? Chen? What happened?"
Without thinking, Yu Chen blurted out, "Sam?"
Hearing the name, Si Xia's eyes dimmed and the temperature seemed to drop down a few degrees. Yu Chen shivered, despite all her sweating.
She was about to cut the call when Si Xia said, "Talk to him. Don't interrupt your talk on my account."
And he shut the door with a slam, literally in Chen's face. It hit her already cold nose and stung very much. But Yu Chen did not notice as the dam in her burst.
Silent tears began to stream out of her eyes as she stood frozen. She was not yet thinking about the woman in the house or Xia being shirtless, her thoughts were only occupied with Si Xia's cold behaviour.
That seemed to sting differently in her heart, as though someone was scratching an old wound she had thought had healed but in reality, it had not.
Chen did not know how long she stood there, the scene from right now playing in her mind with another one in which Xia was climbing the stairs to reach her, the same expression.
But she did not know from where the latter one came.
Yu Chen's head snapped up as the front door opened again. It was snowing, the snow had settled on her shoulders and her tears still streamed on, feeling too warm on this cold morning.
Out came the woman and then Si Xia, now fully dressed. He stopped dead upon the sight of Chen.
