Si Xia was taken aback by Sam's words. "I am not smothering Chen in any way. She is free to do whatever she wants." He replied, his tone hard.
Sam's lips curved into a small smile, "You don't even believe that yourself." He then turned serious, "You know, I'm not here to start any misunderstandings between you and Chen. You know, she's a really good friend of mine. And I'm only here to tell you some things she's too scared to say herself."
Xia frowned upon hearing this. Chen was too scared to say some things to him? Impossible. He remembered how she had acted, only this morning. It was impossible that she was being smothered by his love.
Samuel spoke again, pulling Xia back from his thoughts, "I just want to relate one incident to you. What you do after that is up to you."
Xia said, his voice expressionless, "One incident?"
Sam: "Yeah. Well, before that. I know it's no point hiding it from you, since Chen knows it too. I like her. Like really."
Xia: "I know that."
Sam: "Did Chen tell you?"
Xia: "Doesn't matter how. I know it. Now back to the incident."
Sam: "Oh yeah. You know, once she said that she was really scared about how much she loved you."
Xia frowned.
Sam slapped his forehead, "I'm not going about this the right way. The talk went like this....."
Yu Chen and Sam Darcy were sitting on the roof of Chen's dorms one summer evening. It had gotten dark and the sky was overcast with clouds, so thay no moon or stars wete visible behind the clouds.
"I just can't understand why, Chen? Why?" Sam whined.
Chen sighed, "We've been through this Sam."
Sam: "But I still can't understand."
Chen: "I love him. That's it. There's no space in my heart for someone else."
Sam: "Yeah I get that. But what I'm worried about is...."
Chen raised an eyebrow, "Is?"
Sam: "You might love him with all your heart, but what about him? I mean, you guys were together for what? No time really. You had one date and that too with no real commitment. And since then you've been here for two years."
"What are you trying to say?" Yu Chen said through gritted teeth.
Sam turned his head to look at her, "I'm not trying to anger you. And if I am, I'll stop."
Chen took a few deep breaths and said, "It's all right. You're just expressing your point of view. I'll keep that in mind."
Sam: "Yeah. So like I was saying. You might love him with all your heart, but you guys barely know each other. And you, boys are fickle, I ought to know that."
Yu Chen was silent for some time before she said, "So you think he is cheating on me?"
Sam shook his head, "Not really. And you can't take my opinion to be objective. I'm too involved to have a neutral opinion. All I'm trying to say is.....Take care, don't get so emotionally invested that you're not able to get out, even if you someday need to."
Sam had expected Che to burst out at him in anger, but she didn't. Instead, she turned silent, deep in thought.
Once she looked up, Chen said something that Sam would never have expected.
