Chapter 106: Get well soon. Wake up quickly.
Soon, Mo Kio was discharged and the three sat on a bench just outside Hua's theatre and opposite the bench where Mr. and Mrs. Xi were sitting.
It was clear that Mr. Xi did not still approve of Chen, but he said nothing.
After about half an hour, the door of the operation theatre opened. They all gathered around the doctor who took off his mask and said, "The patient is out of danger."
They all breathed a sigh of relief.
The doctor continued, "There was a minor injury on the head, which is actually really lucky. Seems like the girl had quick wits to adjust herself in the air so that her head was not injured."
Mrs. Xi: "So how's Hua?"
Doctor: "The patient is fine. The head injury was not very serious. We have relocated the bone and removed the clotting, so she is out of danger. But...." The doctor bit his lips. He took a deep breath and continued, "As I told you, her legs were downward, so they are very badly injured. We have patched them up the best we could, but we're going to have to call an orthopaedic surgeon to perform proper surgery."
Mo Kio: "She will have to go through another surgery?"
Doctor: "I'm afraid so. Her legs are in a really bad condition. Many bones are broken and some have been badly crushed. But, the child is young, with a proper surgery, the bones will repair themselves."
Yu Chen: "Can we meet her?"
Doctor: "I do not want to have too many people in her room. So go inside in batches of two or three. She has been shifted to room 589."
All five of them went towards room 589. When they reached there, Mr. Xi immediately started to go in. But Mrs. Xi pulled on his sleeve to stop him.
Mr. Xi: "What?"
Mrs. Xi: "Let the kids go in first."
Mr. Xi: "She's not their daughter, is she? She is mine."
Mrs. Xi: "We can stay her for the whole night. But these kids need to go home."
Mr. Xi: "You will not stop me from going in."
Mrs. Xi: "I'm not trying to. Just let the kids go in first. We can't waste time." After some thought, she added, "Han would also be missing us."
This seemed to do something for Mr. Xi. He stepped aside and said, looking at the three of them, "Don't take too long."
The three nodded and went in. As Chen went in, she gasped. Xi Hua was lying on the bed. There were many needles in her hand and many monitors were beeping. Her head had been shaved and Hua looked lifeless in the hospital gown. Her feet were visible, which were heavily bandaged, like her head. There was also a plaster on her left hand.
Yu Chen was about to drop to the ground again when Kio and Xia held her from each side and led her towards a chair on the side of Hua's bed.
Yu Chen carefully took Hua's hand in her's, taking care not to disturb the needles, and sat there like that. After some time had passed, Xia gently said, "Chen, we should be going. Her parents must be waiting outside."
Chen stood up, wiped the tears from her eyes and nodded. She bent and kissed lightly on Hua's forehead. "Get better soon. Wake up quickly." she murmured and left the room.
