Chapter 5: Fortune teller

8:50 A.M.

The room is almost entirely empty, with only a couple students on the back texting on their phones and the professor setting up the projector. He is about 60 years old and is wearing a sweater that matched the carpet my parents had, which I think is impressive. I take a seat close to the window and put my head down. Clara seats behind me to avoid the natural light, and instantly pulls out her notebook and starts talking to John. Her passion is admirable and nauseating at times. I pull up the top of my jacket and cover myself, waiting for everything to be ready to start.

The noise of the chair moving next to me wakes me up immediately, and I straighten my back as fast as I can. I am shocked when I look to me side and see hoodie dude there, wearing jeans and a long-sleeved black shirt. He didn't notice me yet, so I abruptly turn my neck to the window, giving me a shock of pain. I try to hold in a shriek.

-Are you okay? – He asks. I move my head in yes, making the pain worse, but refusing to look at him or make any sound. He leaves me alone, thankfully.

-Welcome, my name is George Harrington. – Says the professor. -This is our technical writing class, or for short ENC 2210. As most of you now, this class became a core class last year for all science and humanities courses, so some of you might struggle a bit, but I'll help you through it. Let me take attendance, and then we'll go over the syllabus. I am looking forward to knowing you all.

He then proceeds to his computer and starts reading our names. And then I realize, if he's doing the attendance sheet, he'll recognize it. I wrote it on the goddamn note. My phone vibrates and as I pick it up, I see Clara's message: "Girl, your luck is out of this world XD" in which I reply: "End me. I beg you". I can hear her laughing behind me. I sink into my seat a bit more.

-Alyssa Miller? – The professor calls, and I raise my hand, accepting my fate.

From the corner of my eye, I can see Marcus looking towards me, now recognizing me. He puts on this poker face like nothing happened and focuses back in his book like it was nothing. I don't know if I should be disappointed or happy over what just happened.

-Marcus Howard -The professor continues, and then finishes the attendance.

For the next torturing one hour and fifty minutes, I am desperately trying to distract myself from the person next to me, still feeling guilty and embarrassed. What are the chances of landing in the same class as him when he's on his last semester?! And of him seating right next to me? I get it, the class is full but give me a break with these coincidences. Just having him in the same class is already bad, but having to seat right next to him too? I must have been a horrible person in my last life. This is excruciating.

-That's all. I see you all this Wednesday. -The professor ends the class, and I have never jumped out of my seat so fast in my entire life. Clara gets her stuff as I'm leaving, and she catches up outside the second building.

-I can't believe it, your luck is out of this world! -Exclaims Clara, catching her breath.

-Luck? Clara how is this good? I'm going to feel tortured for the whole semester! -I say, walking in circles.

-Ooooor… you could end up having a good time with Marcus, hehe. -She is clearly enjoying my suffering.

-Yeah and then I go to his room and say hi to Randy on the way in and we all end up playing poker and being happily ever after. -I feel my body shiver at that thought. -Jesus what is wrong with you?!

She is laughing her ass off as I speak.

-Hey look, you h-have to understand m-my point of view in this. -She can barely speak while laughing. She's even starting to tear up- It's just ridiculous how you met him in a party, went to his room, and then he appeared in the exact same class and sat right next to you, all that in the course of 3 days. You have to admit that destiny is speaking to you.

-Destiny might as well go mute, cause I'm not falling for this madness. -I say, starting to walk towards the library. -I'll see you later, fortune teller.

-If I'm right, you owe me fifty! -She waves me goodbye and walks away. -I'm serious!

-Whatever you say! -I joke and keep walking towards the library. Today is going to be a long day.
