Chapter 14: Chapter 13

"Well, Jack, it's time for us to start our journey," Paul stated with a smile full of emotion.

-Woof- Jack replied equally happy.

... ..

Paul and Jack can now be seen standing at the entrance to the snowy forest. Paul wears his new snow leopard outfit and Jack is wearing the cold collar.

-Okay, let's go inside- Paul declares as he enters the forest.

-Jack, always remember to stay by my side in case we run into any danger-, Paul reminded Jack.

-Woof-, Jack nodded according to Paul's words.

After receiving his confirmation Paul kept talking as he pulled out his map. -Well, according to this map we should walk in that direction-, he exclaimed as he pointed to the right.

-Woof-, Jack cocked his head in confusion, after all, if they walked in the direction Paul was pointing, it would only slow them down longer, right?

-Remember that we want to surround the Forest and not go through it- Paul explained when he saw Jack's confusion -we do not want to meet any dangerous monster or one of that strange golems-.

Jack nodded understanding what Paul meant, he also remembers the book they read in the library.

After this small talk, they both continued walking for a while until they heard a noise coming from a bush near them.

- Did you hear that Jack?- Paul asked quietly as he slowly drew his sword.

Jack didn't answer and just stared at the bush.

* squeal * * squeal *

Small screeches were heard before something slowly came out of the bush.

*squeal*

What came out of the bush was a small animal very much like a rabbit except that it has a horn on its head that was smeared with blood that looked fresh. The animal immediately stiffened at the sight of Paul and Jack, and its body began to glow a little with green hues.

*sigh*

Paul sighed with relief to see that it was only a Curnilagus.

The curnilagus is one of the monsters found in this forest, they are generally a weak monster that has almost no offensive power apart from their horn, but that does not make them easy to hunt as their horn has a special affinity for wind magic making these monsters extremely fast when it comes to escape.

-Don't worry Jack, is just a curnilagus, it's not dangerous just let him escape- Paul reassured Jack when he saw that he was still staring at the monster.

Jack had no chance to reply as within seconds of Paul speaking the curnilagus wildly shook his head causing the blood on his horn to spurt out of him and splatter into Paul's outfit.

Jack was surprised by that causing him to lose sight of the curnilagus, but was even more surprised to see that the curnilagus had completely disappeared.

Seeing Jack's surprise, Paul decided to explain what happened -this is just a curnilagus, it is practically harmless, but it is extremely fast when it comes to escape, it probably splashed blood on me to distract us-

After hearing Paul's explanation, Jack understood everything that just happened and calmed down.

Seeing the understanding in Jack's eyes, Paul was going to move on but suddenly had a thought.

- "Why is there a curnilagus in these places? They are supposed to stay away from the ends of the forest" - Paul thought as he walked slowly - "The only reason I can think of is that he was escaping from something, but that would be fast enough to force him to escape to this place "-

Paul decided not to think about it too much and deduced that the best course of action at the moment is to quickly leave the place where they are in case the monster that was chasing the curnilagus decides to follow him to this place.

Deciding that, Paul says to Jack-Jack the best thing would be to get away from this place quickly, we don't know if something dangerous could come at any moment-

Jack nods in agreement with Paul's words, the curnilagus gave him a bad feeling.

When both agree, the two begin to run at a moderate speed in the direction in which they were heading previously.

...…

Shortly after Paul and Jack disappeared into the distance, a large shadow appeared in the place where they were previously.

* GRRRRRRR *

The shadow-causing creature growled a bit before sniffing the air in the direction Paul and Jack had moved away and it gave a roar.

* ROOOOAAAAAAARRRRRRR *

After letting out that roar, the creature surrounded itself with a green light and ran at an amazing speed in the direction in which Paul and Jack left earlier.

...…

After a few hours of running without a break, Paul and Jack decided to rest in a small cleared place that they found on the way.

* Jah * * Jah * * Jah * * Jah *

-How are you, Jack? -Paul asked Jack between gasps.

Jack nodded weakly before laying down on the snow to rest.

Seeing Jack equally tired, Paul laughs a little before sitting down and taking out the rations they brought with them.

-Take this, it will help you recharge your energy-, Paul said as he offered Jack some dried meat.

Jack snatched the meat from Paul's hands and began to eat them quickly.

Paul was amused to see Jack's actions before starting to eat some meat too.

While he ate, Paul observed the bloodstain that the curnilagus had previously left him before he had not given it importance, but now thinking about it calmly he does not understand why a harmless monster like that would have blood that obviously is not his in his horn.

After thinking about it a bit, Paul came to a conclusion - "he probably only defended himself from some predator he couldn't run from and that led him to attack him with his horn" -

Paul felt that such an explanation might be correct after all that being would not defend itself with what it can if its life is in danger, but if that is correct then Paul could get into trouble since the predator in question could follow the curnilagus by following the smell of blood.

Concerned about the possibility of that happening, Paul quickly finishes the meat in his hands before picking up some of the snow on the ground and rubbing it against his outfit to clean up the bloodstain.

After a few tries, the blood disappears completely from the outfit causing Paul to relax.

Now with that out, Paul looks in Jack's direction and says -enough rest, it's time to continue on our way to find a safe place before night comes-.

Jack groans reluctantly at Paul's words but still gets up slowly and follows Paul.

Seeing Jack like this, Paul thinks of something and says -do not worry, this time we will walk, after all, we have to gather energy in case ... -

-Woof- suddenly Jack interrupts Paul's words and begins to look everywhere.

-What's up friend… ..-

- * ROOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAARRRRR * -Paul is interrupted again but this time it was due to a terrifying roar.

Paul and Jack immediately get into a fighting position as they look at all the places waiting for the monster to come out.

A few moments later they hear sounds of branches breaking behind them.

Immediately they both turn around only to be completely pale at what they saw.

A large white bear with scars was emerging from the trees, it seemed to have a deep wound on one side and had a large horn on its forehead, this bear is known as Ursus, a bear with an especially bad temperament and great strength with which he could break armor very easily, but this is not the most dangerous thing that this monster has, its most dangerous characteristic is its speed since, despite its large size, its speed can only be compared by the curnilagus and this it is thanks to the horn on his forehead that he gives the Ursus a great affinity with wind magic.

Seeing Ursus, Paul and Jack started to panic, and Paul exclaimed.

-Because this thing is in this place, it's supposed to only be found in the deep parts of this forest, this doesn't make sense, we have to escape-

While thinking of ways to escape, Paul paused for a moment when he saw the wound that the Ursus had on his side.

-Damn it, this is the fault of the curnilagus. I should have removed that stain earlier-. An angry Paul exclaimed when he discovered the reason for his dangerous situation.

-No, I should have killed that thing and eaten it at the time when ... - -WOOF-

But before Paul finishes expressing his displeasure, Jack cuts him off.

-What happened… ARRRG-

*Crack! *

Before finishing his words, Paul was hit by the Ursus and sent to fly against a tree destroying it on the way.

"Aaarrrrgg!" Paul wailed as he wiped the blood from his mouth.

"Why is my luck with the bears so bad?"

...… ..
