Chapter 45: Chapter Forty - Under Fire

The flames reached Noah's face faster than he expected, he could feel the flames burning away his eyebrows a little bit along with some of his hair. He rolled backwards and onto his bum to avoid any more damage and patted down his chest and face just in case there were any flames that had caught on.

He could hear Fiona laugh at him as he struggled with what had just happened, this was the first time he had tried to use magic aura into a spell and it had gone way to well, one could say.

"You know for a spell, you only need to use a small number of magic particles, certainly not enough to try and burn yourself!" She let out between gasps of laughter although laughing so much caused her injury to worsen.

"Alright, you had your laugh. Buck up, otherwise you'll need another bandaging." Smiling along with her, "So are you ready to tell me what is happening out there?"

While he waited for her to reply, he managed to calm the fire into order and let the bird cook on the edge of some stones he had placed around the makeshift fire pit.

"It turned into a war in the capital. We were attacked out of the blue by what we thought was dragons, but that was near impossible. We are the only nation with such a bond to dragons." Stroking her dragons cheek while she spoke. " They were Wrvyen's. Not quite as intelligent, beautiful or caring as these guys... The Dragon Troops never received orders to defend the outer ring, Phili. There was a split between teams. Some captains took the initiative while others didn't... There were around 20 Wryvens the first day, on the second they had doubled and on the third, they had tripled in both size and amount. I thought the reason we didn't defend in the first place was that the Knight's had cross bolts big enough to shoot them down but they didn't fight back. On the first day, there were only 2 teams that went and helped then there were half the teams on the second."

The mood turned sour with the darkness.

"The Wyverns can breathe fire like it's nothing. No magic is needed, it's as natural as flying to them. Each day we suffered injuries from the teams that went out. No matter how much training you get the teams found that the Wyverns were tougher than they had ever been, they also don't ever work together. The Phili ring burned down in a day, but that wasn't enough to have orders come down and defend apparently." Noah could hear the last of her statement spit out like venom.

"Even though we were stationed between Phili and Bernard we weren't allowed to do anything because we hadn't been given permission. The two captains that came back were disciplined so hard that they are in coma's right now. Every team knew the consequences of flying out on the second, but they did it anyway. We couldn't bear to hear the screams for help, the fire blazed out of control; burning so hot we could feel it against our skins from the wall. My captain sent us out on the second day and after finishing the battles; I was ordered to fly directly to the Dragon Keep and give a report from my captain to the general." Softly sighing under her breath and clutching her chest.

"What happened to you after? Surely your captain wouldn't have sent you off with an injury like that?" Through the whole update of everything, Noahs face only worsened. Creasing at hearing such horrible news.

"I was attacked after five minutes of flying; they hid in the smoke and struck down from it, leaving me with this. Don't worry, I managed to get them back right in their guts but when I turned to go back and report it to my captain I saw all hell break loose. Dragon Troopers fighting each other. Uni told me to keep going so we could add it to the report to the generals but we didn't take in to account how much of a toll the battles had taken on us."

Noah turned the bird over on the stone, it sizzled as it hit the other side of the stone. Fiona flinched and backed a little closer to beside her dragons resting head.

"Why are you telling me all this? I didn't think you would trust me this much."

"Well, if you really do have a Master who is a retired Dragon Trooper he must have friends who you might know there and it's not like that could be kept an easy secret. Even though we are Dragon Troopers we are human too."

They let the silence fall over them as they both thought about what was happening and what had caused such an internal break between the Troopers.

"Let's eat. I am sure, Uni was it? Will be awake soon and you will need to fly directly to the Dragon Keep and report everything to your general."

"... Do you want to join us? There isn't much you could do in the capital but maybe you could find your master in the keep? I know they don't normally let in people unless you are a guest of the captain but retired Troopers normally have some sway in the tower, just a name they can check on should be enough."

Appreciating Fiona's offer but he was torn on what he should do, he couldn't get the ring to teleport him back to Aulerin and he wasn't sure where Master Quin had gone or who any of those people at the cabin were. It was so many questions he wasn't sure what he had to do first.

"Thank you for the offer, let me meditate on it first though while you eat." Noah pushed himself up and walked away a few hundred metres.

Meditation had not only become a tool for Noah to grow his control of his magic aura but it settled his mind and helped him think. He would just stand and imagine a current of water flowing around his body, slow and steady.

He let everything flow through him, thinking of everything in order:

- The dimension that Alaric thought had a huge time difference seemed to barely have one.

- Quin had disappeared and there were multiple people dead in or beside the cabin

- The ring was not working properly

- Sir Isan may have been court-martialled

It was a lot to process and Noah wasn't sure what the best route to go was, he had no idea how to get into another dimension in the first place. He wasn't sure how to find him in the first place and if anyone knew how to find Master Quin it would be Sir Isan.

Standing there breathing in slowly, thinking about how he could best get through it all.

His eyes opened wide, he had an epiphany. Noah realised where he had to go first and who he had to find.
