Chapter 8: Café

"Well you clearly did something, after all the school choose you over thousands of other low-tiers. Anyways we are almost there." Hunter said.

We reach the café and went inside and sat down. We quickly started discussing the project as I got the book out and we started looking it over together. I explained what he needed me too. We originally waved away the waitress, but the sun started to go down. I was hungry but this wasn't school I couldn't get food here, I couldn't afford it. I kept focusing on work to get my mind off the fact that I was hungry. Hunter waved the waitress down. "I would like a BLT and Coffee and a water."

"Ok and for you young lady."

"Oh, I don't want anything." The waitress seemed to sense that I was like here a low-tier who was out of place and brought back two waters and a coffee.

"There you two go and I'll be back with you food in a second sir."

"Thank you." I said with a smile and she smiled back at me and nodded. Hunter looked at me strange.

"Why didn't you order anything aren't you hungry?"

"No, I'm not hungry. I'll wait until we get back to get food if I'm hungry then."

"Megan you know it's late and the sun is going down, we aren't going to be back before the cafeteria closes. You should at least get food to go."

"It's ok I'll be fine, I'm not hungry." I was lying I wanted food so badly, but my mom can barely afford a train ticket to get me to school and back let alone to get stuff from here. I couldn't possibly be selfish enough to make her work more than she already is for food. I can just wait for breakfast tomorrow.

"Suit yourself, let get back to work. We can take a break when my food gets here." I nodded and we continued to work and explain the reading to him. After another half hour or so of work Hunters sandwich came out and he started to eat. I sat quietly reading the book to get ahead to help explain things for when we started up again. Hunter broke the silence. "Early you talked about you dad and said was, why is that."

I shut my eyes wish it would be enough to avoid the question although I knew it wouldn't.

"Don't make me ask again Cripple."

"Don't call me a cripple! I'm not a cripple ok! I'm just not as strong as you or the others. That doesn't mean I'm a cripple."

"Don't raise your voice at me! Remember your place." Hunter said coldly his eyes began to glow, reminding me he had power and I didn't.

"My father died." I said sadly under his gaze which let up after answering his question.

"How did he die and when did it happen?"

"I don't really see why that matters, it's not like you really care anyways." I said quietly but you could feel it's coldness. He gazed at me with a look that reminded me not to let him repeat himself. " my dad worked really hard in the mines. He needed to that way he could support me and my mom especially since I was gone. He had to pick of the slack since I they lost my income from babysitting and helping clean people's houses... he died last year, because he picked up extra hours to make up for me and to make it so I could come home. There was an accident because it was a night shift and the lighting wasn't good. If I wouldn't have been picked for this stupid school, or if I wouldn't of came here or if I wouldn't of pushed me coming home so much even though I knew they couldn't afford it... I killed my dad." I said looking at the book in my lap as tears started running down my face. I had never said it out loud before, not to myself not to anyone. Saying it out loud made it real.

"I'm sorry, but you know it's not your fault. It was a mining accident, you couldn't of known. No one could of." He got closer to me and grabbed my face forcing my head to look up but instead of looking at him I closed my eyes. I felt my cold tears running down my face and falling onto my hand. It felt like hail falling and hitting my hands with each tear. He stared at my crying pitiful state for a while. Then his warm hand grazed over my check rubbing away my tears. He was so gentle. Then he spoke, "don't you have friends you can cry about this with, we have a project to do. Get yourself together."

I wiped the tears from my face and opened my eyes. I was still trying to process wt he said and how it hit me. I was alone. I had no friends to rely on. I was nothing, and meant nothing to everyone. I'm not sure if he knew the answer to his statement already but I could see regret in his eyes after saying it. I gathered my stuff. "I'm sorry I wasted your time. I'm going back to the dorms now to rest I will see you on Monday."

I stood up from the table but so did he, I went to walk away but he grabbed my arm and pulled me back. He pulled me into his arms. He hugged me. That when he whispered "I'm sorry, for everything. I'll walk you back to the dorms." He released me. I waited for him to pay and we walked back together in silence. Before reach the gate he spoke for the first time since we had left the café. "Meet me out here again tomorrow at 8am sharp understood." I nodded my head. With that we returned to our dorms he walked back with me half once we were on campus then we split up. He don't want to risk being seen with me, but at this point is was late. When I got back to my room I looked at the clock and it was already 11:30. I hurried up and change and laid down in bed to sleep. I couldn't stop thinking about how we were meeting up again tomorrow and I couldn't just get away. I had to do what I was told.
