Chapter 15: The Birth of a Magus

<You have reached beyond the normal bounds of sorcery and have taken your first step onto the path of a Magus! A Magus is no mere spellcaster for they embody the very essence of magic within themselves. Be forewarned, your actions and words will carry greater weight now. For you are intricately linked to the essence of the Universe.>

Merlin's descendant (Common):

You are a descendant of the Arch Magus Merlin! Merlin was gifted with immense magical talent, and the gift of sight. A very rare combination, Merlin spent many years as a Seer and as an advisor to Royalty. But few knew the full might of Merlin's magic! As his descendant you are granted the following: x2 the normal amount of Mana, spells will cost 25% less to cast, and spell power will be improved by 35% in all spell schools. (Can be evolved)>

*Ding* <Abilities have been gained! Due to level restriction they have been concealed and locked, they will become available at their respective levels.>

*Ding* <Congratulations you have learned the skill: Mana Manipulation>

*Ding* <Congratulations you have learned the skill: Meditation>

*Ding* <Meditation Skill has leveled>

*Ding* <Meditation Skill has leveled>

*Ding* <Meditation Skill has leveled>

*Ding* <Meditation Skill has leveled>

.....

*Ding* <Meditation Skill has leveled>

<Meditation Skill has reached level 10>

Whoa 10 free attributes, and my bloodline evolved! Now I will get a 25% decrease to mana use, and my spells will hit 35% harder, too bad the two times mana didn't increase but I shouldn't be too greedy. I did gain the Mana Manipulation and Meditation skills, Meditation even reached level 10! All of this because I was just trying to learn how to cast first level spells? I don't know if I should thank my Luck or my bloodline. Apparently being related to Merlin is giving me some sweet bonuses, although I really wish I had someone around that could spell out simple what a Magus was. Because so far all I know is I somehow embody the essence of magic inside me, I'm now also linked to the essence of the universe (whatever that is), and my words and actions will have greater impact somehow. And I really needed to get to level 5 fast, I really want my abilities.

Not very enlightening if I'm being honest, raises more question without answering any of my original questions. Grumbling over the increasingly growing pile of unanswered questions, I checked on my clothes. My shirt was now completely dry, pants were mostly dry except for where I had been sitting, but my boots were still damp. I put my shirt back on and repositioned my boots hoping they would dry faster. Settling myself back into a comfortable sitting position close to the fire I decided it was time for me to look at my status page.

Not bad, I muttered to myself. Increased health, stamina, and mana was always nice to get. And I noticed the 0/12 next to my 'Magus Blood' trait. This has got to have something to do with the 12 symbols in my mana pathway! I don't have time now, but I should really study them later and see if I can figure out what I needed to do with them. I also still have my 5 free stat points from reaching level 2. I decided to not spend them yet, I don't know why but I just felt a strong aversion to using them yet. Maybe I played to many games in the past and was too scared to screw up my build. It's not as if I can just reroll a new character this time, this is my life now. Not some game, and I have some payback to deliver, under no circumstances can I screw up.

I tried to not let these thoughts overwhelm me and decided to check out something in my inventory that I've been dying to check out, but I restrained myself after reading the primer on becoming a mage. But now that my mana was flowing easily I don't see a reason not to check it out. I pulled the Grimoire from my inventory.

It was a large dark leather book. On the cover were the images of two wolves across from each other who seemed to be howling at the moon. Directly above them was a depiction of the suns, encircling the two stars was a long serpentine eastern dragon. It had no legs and two wings that really looked too small for the serpent. And then arranged around the entire cover was the different stages of the solar and lunar cycles. The top half had the sun and the lower half had the moons. Directly below the wolves was the image of the full moons, and a depiction of a western dragon was inside the largest moon, next was a Unicorn, and a Phoenix was depicted inside the smallest moon.

The entire cover was edged in a highly intricate border that seemed completely made of perfect geometric shapes that somehow depicted organic life perfectly. Last thing was a gold medal latch on the side of the book. The latch seemed to have no keyhole or mechanism to open it. I kept turning the book over and over with no success.

Giving up on the latch for now I laid the book down in my lap and just admired the imagery displayed on the cover. After a few minutes I felt subtle call for me to place my hand onto the book. Without giving it a second thought, I followed my instincts and placed my palm face down directly over the wolves in the center of the book.

*Ding* <Unbound Grimoire, would you like to bind this Grimoire to yourself? Warning, you may only have 1 Grimoire bound to you at a time. Note: Due to being a Magus with no Grimoire, once bound this Grimoire will be upgraded to a Magus rank Grimoire and will become your permanent Grimoire.>

<Bind:>

<Yes>

<No>

Easy choice, I mentally selected the 'Yes'. The book started to glow; the suns appears just like the ones currently in the sky above my head. The moons also took on the look of the real things. The Creatures also came to life and started moving on the book. The Border with it's strange geometrical organic lines were writhing like a bed of snakes or a sped-up view of growing vines.

This was amazing! The two wolves lowered their muzzles from the sky and looked directly at each other. A light started forming between them, it kept building until it was as bright as a flashlight before it shot from the book directly into my chest. I felt a connection with this Grimoire settle inside me, it was odd, the book felt alive. A stylized 'H.D.' burned itself into the leather between the two wolves and at the same time a smaller version of my Initials was being carved into the medal latch. Once my initials were finished all the animals returned to their original spots, the border stopped wiggling, and everything started losing its color and life. It quickly returned back to its original appearance, except for the new 'H.D.' on it.

*Ding* <You have successfully bound Hawk Direveil's Grimoire (Magus Rank)!>
