Chapter 3: Chapter 3

Delilah awoke the next morning around noon with a pounding headache.

"Ugh!" she grimaced holding her head. She cursed at herself for drinking so much the night before.

She then made her way to the kitchen for some aspirin and water. Starting a pot of coffee, she looked at the time. She didn't have to be to Rau Tavern for another four hours.

Delilah sat down with her favorite coffee mug and clicked on the Saturday news.

"Three more found dead in the warehouse district last night. Police are still trying to identify the bodies as they question whether these killings are random or the work of a wildly active serial killer. More on that tonight at eleven. Back to you Harold." the news girl said.

"I'll tell you what is random." Delilah said aloud. "Three of our Mark's getting dumped in the same spot. That makes 16 bodies dumped there this month. I'll have to talk to Bones about that." she decided.

After she finished her coffee she took a long shower and thought about all the bodies the police had been finding lately. We aren't usually this sloppy, she thought. Whenever she got rid of bodies she usually dumped then in the river at night, or pushed them into a sewer grate. Sometimes she brought the bodies to Tess, an organ marketer. Tess was a member of the group that Delilah worked for and was in charge of marketing any stolen/smuggled goods. But Tess's favorite thing to do was dissecting bodies and removing the organs to be sold. She was a bit creepy but Delilah still liked conversing with her at the tavern

Delilah got out of the shower and began dressing for her second job. She wore black jeans, a grey t-shirt, an oversized black jacket and a grey beanie hat which she tucked her hair into.

She then applied black eyeliner around her eyes and put in the brown colored contacts she wore for her second job. You could never be too careful when it came to protecting your true identity. Delilah then tied a black bandana around the lower half of her face and put on a pair of black leather gloves.

An assassin was to never leave evidence that they were there.

The group she worked for was comically referred to as "Jerry's Kids". Those who worked with her liked the name, as it had a kind of a charity-like sound to it.

Jerry's Kids was more than just a group of assassins however. It was home to burglars, pickpockets, bodyguards, smugglers the likes. There were also people there who dealt with forgeries, fake documentations, and secrets. Jerry's Kids did NOT however deal in narcotic drugs or sex trafficking. That was one of the things Delilah liked about Jerry, the head of the group, he didn't deal with the torture of children nor the whining of addicts.

Delilah pulled on a pair of knee-high black sneakers and pulled her jeans over them. As a final touch, she tucked one of her favorite daggers into the inside pocket of her jacket. She was just about to head out when she checked out the window. She stopped dead in her tracks and her heart began racing.

A cherry red Dodge Challenger was parked on the street below. Delilah shut the curtain immediately and peeked down around the curtain.

Roger wasn't in the car.

If he's not in the car, then where is he? she asked herself.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

Delilah's heart stopped. She made no sound as she crept to her apartment door and looked through the peephole.

Roger stood outside her door holding a bottle of rosè in one hand and a bouquet of red roses in the other.

"Delilah?" he called through the door. "I know you're in there. I can hear the T.V."

What the fuck is up with this guy? she thought. He could atleast pretend to not be some creepy ass stalker.

"Come on Delilah, open up." he said with authority. "I brought rosè, your favorite."

How would he even know that? she asked herself.

Delilah still didn't make a sound. Maybe he'll give up and go away, she hoped.

She continued to watch him through the peephole. His blonde hair was slicked back and he wore a silver tie that highlighted the sharpness of his grey eyes. Roger had a strong jawline as well, and seemingly flawless pale skin.

Christ, she thought. Why do all the crazies have to be so damn good looking. This guy is literally prettier than me, she thought in exasperation.

"Hmmm." Roger said after awhile. "I see you don't wish to speak with me. This is quite saddening as I truly enjoyed our date together. I had hoped we could continue our relationship. Perhaps I'll see you at the cafe." With that he left the roses and the wine on the floor in front of her apartment door and left.

Delilah made her way to the window and peeked down at Roger's car just as he was getting in to leave. She watched him drive away and breathed a sigh of relief.

She looked at the stove clock. 4:45 p.m. "Shit" she said jumping up. Delilah had to be to Rau Tavern by five o'clock. No matter what she did now, she would be late.

Delilah ran out of her apartment, locking the door good and tight and stepping over the stalker gifts she made a bee line down the stairs and to the bus stop.

She arrived outside of Rau Tavern by 5:30.

"Yup" she said as she straightened her bandana. "Bones is going to murder me. I am going to die today, and my organs will be sold to some weird ass cannibals on some island off the coast of who-cares-where." She told herself confidently as she walked into the tavern, completely ready for disembowlment.

Rau Tavern was a dirty old place in a shady area outside the city. How cliche, Delilah had thought the first time she'd seen the place. The Highway to Hell was playing as she made her way around the tables towards the bar where Bones worked.

He looked up and frowned when he saw her.

"Heyyy." she smiled at him. Not that he could see it through her bandana she realized.

He did not smile back. His scarred, dark skinned face was frowning and he crossed his arms.

"Where the hell have you been? You're late. I already gave out the extra contracts. You missed out." he said in his usual grumpy deep voice.

"Oof." she said disappointedly. "That ice cream girl is still mine though right?"

His face softened a little. "Yeah she's still yours. But don't expect any more for two weeks. And why the hell did you call me at 3 in the damn morning?" he demanded.

"I'm really sorry about that Bones," she said looking down at her feet. "I was just, well I was scared..." Bones was the only one she could talk about her feelings with. Even though he was a bit hard on her, he was the first friend she made in the group and the only one who knew her true identity. She knew his too though. His real name was Boone Sloane.

Bones's face softened again and he rubbed his face with his hand and scratched at the large scar he had acrossed his nose.

"Ugh, I know I'm being hard on you D. I've just- well it's been a rough few days for me." he said apologetically.

Delilah perched on a barstool. "What's up Bones?" she asked genuinely concerned.

He looked up at her relieved. "Thanks D." he obviously had something he needed to get off his chest.

"It's Mira." he said, straining to say the name. "She packed her stuff and left two days ago. She said that I was no good scum because of my profession."

"Oh" Delilah said.

They were silent for a moment. Bones had been with Mira for four months, one of his longest relationships.

"I'm sorry Bones." Delilah said taking one of his large calloused hands into her small gloved one. "I'm sure you'll find someone deserving of you."

"It's okay it's just..." he scratched at his scar again and rubbed his eyes with thumb and pointer finger. "I just- I had hoped that we would last."

They sat in another prolonged silence.

Then Bones cleared his throat. "So uh, what did you need last night? Err should I say this morning?"
