Chapter 2

Delilah's heart was pounding in her ears. She froze as Roger's cold, sweaty hand rested on her thigh. She gripped the car handle until her knuckles turned white, trying with all her might to get the door opened.

Roger leaned toward her face, staring at her. She looked away, trembling. He breathed deeply through his nose. Finally he spoke after what seemed like an eternity.

"I hope we can do this again. May I escort you inside your apartment?" he asked in such a way as if he were merely inquiring her name.

"N-no thank you, I'll be fine." she said as she struggled to maintain stable breathing.

He sat back in the driver's seat, as if disappointed. "Very well then," he quipped as he unlocked the passenger car door.

Delilah hopped out of the car, not ungracefully, and walked quickly up to her apartment. Rushing into her apartment and bolting the door, she did not feel safe until she personally checked the strength of every lock on every window in her apartment. She did her best to stop her heart from racing as she leaned against her kitchen counter panting from fear-wrought exhaustion.

She peeked out of her living room window down at the street below, Roger's car was gone.

She exhaled in relief and made her way back to the kitchen, ruffling through her short brown hair with her nails.

"This is why I don't go on dates dammit." she cursed at her stupidity, and vowed never to be attracted to anyone else ever again.

"I need to calm my ass down." she told herself as she made her way to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of rosè.

"Ugh, my last bottle. I need to go shopping." she said as she poured herself a glass. She sipped at her glass, then noticed the empty cat bowl on the floor beside her.

"Oh, Thorn." she called as she set her glass down and went for the cat food.

The large, Russian blue, Maine coon cat padded into the kitchen at the sound of his name and went right for the food bowl Delilah was filling. Thorn had been a stray kitten in a plastic bag the first time they'd met. Abandoned by his family, not unlike herself. She had had no idea he'd grow into the great monster of a cat he was now, twenty six pounds in counting. She smiled at him as he gobbled up his food.

"I hope your day was less stressful than mine." she said to the cat as she sipped her wine.

"I need to call Bones." she decided as she set her empty glass down on the counter and went for her phone. She dialed the number she knew by heart and clicked at the counter with her nails as she listened to the rings. He picked up on the third ring.

"I know you're not calling me at this ungodly hour D." Bones said in a deep and tired voice.

She hadn't even checked the time. Delilah glanced at the stove clock, 2:37 a.m. Yikes! she thought.

"Shit, sorry Bones" she said apologetically. "I didn't even realize-"

"What do you want?" Bones demanded angrily.

"I uh I need you to run a background check on someone. A man named Rog-"

"Can't this wait till tomorrow? Christ D, I've got z's to catch now if you don't mind!" he said.

"But Bones I-" she tried.

"Good. Night." he said grittily and hung up.

"Hmmm..." she said looking at her phone. "Yeah that was my fault." she decided as she set her phone down and filled up another glass of rosè.

It had helped to calm her nerves and she felt a little braver now. She walked over to her living room window and opened up the curtains to look at the view of the bustling city outside. The lights were beautiful, even from the window of a shitty apartment on the outside of the city. Delilah loved the city. The beauty, the culture, the people. So many people.

"Few of them are missed you know." she said to the cat sitting on the arm rest of the chair nearby. "In my opinion, I think there's too many people."

She looked at her empty wineglass disappointedly and went to refill it. The bubbly, clear pink liquid was a perfect combination of her favorite beverage and color.

Delilah made her way back out to the living room to watch out the window. Dark clouds had begun to hover lately, it was the start of the stormy season. That means the alleys would be flooded and the people would be crazy. Delilah both loved and hated people.

Some could be so eccentric and fascinating, but then you meet those like Roger, and they just spoil the lot of of them for you. Too many people, she decided.

Atleast there'll be one less by Wednesday, Delilah thought to herself. There was no better place for her second job than in the city. A dagger wielding assassin needed all the cover she could get.
