Chapter 1: Working For A Dungeon Core

I watched my life slowly fade from my body. I knew then and there, there was no hope for a better life. Instinctively I knew what death was, it was a termination of your body and soul, and I didn't like it. My soul protested to such a thing. That's when I felt a connection form with my mind. With that I was gone, my soul was no longer facing eminent erasure.

Looking around I didn't recognize a thing. In fact I knew all I could see was darkness. Feeling with my hand I realized I was surrounded by rock. One thought came to my mind. 'Was I buried?' Quickly however I knew that wasn't possible and as such searched for another answer to my situation. 'Is this a cave?' Looking for the answer to this I climbed on the ground upwards trying to find a surface to this world. Then I noticed a crystal I knew all to well. 'A Dungeon Crystal?'

Making my way up to my feet I made my way to the construction of the pedestal that held the glowing Dungeon Core. Placing my hands on it I felt a start to my mind's space as I felt a foreign thing enter my mind.

"Hello Dungeon Citizen 1 Please do your best for the dungeon."

Realizing I was a summoned creature from the way it was talking I looked at my hands and noticed green hands. I quickly knew what I was. "I'm a Goblin?"

"Correct Citizen, the dungeon currently has only the Basic Goblin race to chose from. It also doesn't have any skills for the race either. The dungeon recognizes you have sentience on a maximum sentience setting without the dungeons doing. Looking into it. Discovered. Lost soul accidently took over body of 1st Citizen's body. As 1st Citizen never formed a soul Dungeon will consider you free of charges of murder. Please work for betterment of the Dungeon. Since your first creature with sentience of this dungeon you shall be given special tasks of the dungeon with corresponding rewards. Please lead future creatures of the dungeon for the betterment of the dungeon."

Hearing all of this I broke out into a cold sweat realizing how close I just came to death. "Dungeon what do you need me to do. Since I gained this body I don't have certain memories on what tasks you wish me to do. I also don't know how to better the dungeon."

"The dungeon is processing your situation. Allowing certain learning privileges straight from dungeon for a lack of mana. Come here Citizen 1 and listen to tasks. I have currently 3 selectable missions for you that can directly help the dungeon. You can carry rocks you find to clean up this cave and bring them to the dungeon so it can absorb them for energy. You can kill creatures from another dungeon to give it more mana and new monsters, skills, and other things that are producible from mana. Finally you can complete missions set by the dungeon in specific situations to gain prizes depending on situation, task, and difficulty."

Taking the information and leaving I started doing the only task I knew how to do for now, pick up rocks. Getting on the task I wondered what to do for food. Eventually though after hours of work I noticed something extraordinary. I no longer need to eat food, and that meant I could just focus on whatever tasks I was given and have a chance to survive any future adventurers or monsters who came if I did enough to help the core.

Hours more passed and I noticed I also never grew tired. Well at least physically, I noticed I could get mentally tired. Bringing the last stone I the room that was larger than a fist to the dungeon core. It used all the energy it gathered to create a few new items. They were a broom, dustpan, Infinite lights that lasts infinitely to spread around the room and a pickaxe. Picking up the pickaxe I all of a sudden got two new screens.

"Good Job Citizen 1 pick one of the two missions. Sweep, Sweep- Using the magic broom and dustpan fully clean up the cave of all regular dirt and make the floor feel smooth. The Dustpan automatically delivers the dirt to the Dungeon Core for further mana usage. Ding, Ding- Using the normal Pickaxe dig out the walls of the dungeon in highlighted parts to gain rock and new living space and then deliver the rocks to the dungeon."

Taking the mission for pickaxing I started breaking up the small areas in the room of the cave I was in leaving only the places to dig that would create future pathways for the dungeon. Now the dungeon room was dug out in a cylindrical shape with a roof that was the same as a circled cut in half place on top of a cylinder.

Looking over at the latters that had been formed as I worked I couldn't help but shudder at the memory of falling to my death. That was when I had found out I was something called a permanent summon according to the dungeon. Each Permanent summon was able to have it's soul sent to a newly created body upon their death by the dungeon. The dungeon didn't even need to do anything as the body naturally saved up the mana to do so deep within itself. This also allowed summons with such a status to be able to change their race, stats, and skill easily without needing to suffer a process of their body reworking itself continuously over time to adapt.

Blessing my luck yet still being frightened of death I wondered what I should do next after working for so long. Going over to a wall I put down the pick and was about to pick up the broom when I got a new mission.

"Sanding, Painting, and Reworking. You have gathered a good amount of mana for the moment and as such the dungeon will reward you with a magical sand file that you must control with your mind. Use it to smooth down the walls perfectly in the dungeon room."

Seeing the mission I felt my mind starting to dumb down as I got used to it. 'Soon,' I thought to myself over, over, and over. That lasted for weeks. Sure enough the walls and the room was eventually perfectly smoothed and painted over. The room was even given wood that covered it completely and gave it two floors from the mana gathered from rocks and the world itself as I discovered the core was able to gather mana by itself just at a rate slightly slower than what I could earn every day tackling the task of digging the passage ways out of this room.

Sitting down on the ground happily at finally finishing my task I felt something stir within my mind.

"Your very diligent Citizen 1. The dungeons glad that you decided to inherit a body from it's dungeon. It as such has a choice for you to make. The dungeon can increase the number of goblins under your generator so that way they'll be 10 total goblins including you. Of course you'll be the only one with a fully sentient mind so the dungeon will let you lead them. The second choice you have is the option to upgrade your generator with a skill out of the selection that the dungeon has compiled. Thirdly you may chose to double the strength of all summons of your generator."

Considering the implications of it I asked a couple of things first. "How often is each of these options given as rewards." Humoring the soul the dungeon responded to it.

"Each of these option are frequently given as they are considered basic rewards in this world for all dungeons to give to their hardest working citizens.

Taking in the information I finally chose the option of having other goblins. Reading my mind the dungeon got to work as it started glowing brightly and from air 9 body's formed with their infinite revival allowing cores.

Sighing I was not enjoying the fact of being forced to work again, but knowing other dungeons existed and they could one day try to attack my dungeon core killing me I gave it my all to survive but still live a good life by creating a place I could be proud of with the dungeon. I didn't want to live a worthless life after all. Who did?
