Chapter 9: A memory you wanted to forget
I followed Kayla, we walked into a park, while I'm wondering where we're headed, she suddenly talked "Isn't this place a beauty Lala?". I looked at her, I am confused, why it appears to her that this place is stunning. Without waiting for my reply, she continued walking, I did the same then I said to her "Why do you like it this much? We have much beautiful parks back home, I don't understand you sometimes." She laughed at me and said, "You're the one who confuses me. You thought me how to look at everything in different perspective, you thought me how to see every beauty is every situation. Just like this, I know we have more beautiful place back home but we're in Taiwan now, why not appreciate what we can see now. They have a different kind of aesthetics. You get me now?"
I smiled and nodded, she's right, I always tell myself to see the beauty in every situation, not to agonize over something you don't have a control of. Just like me and him, it was a long time ago, but I still feel the pain, I still miss him. I can't just forget him.
I wasn't paying attention to where we were heading, Kayla suddenly stopped, and I bump into her. I looked at the place she's looking at and said "We went here for this? Kaykay we have SunnyHill back home."
She looked at me angrily "So, we are in a different country, we're not in Tokyo, we're not in a place we hang out when we're in med school." I am not satisfied with her answer, I am irritated, I looked at her coldly and said "Yes you have a point, but why of all places here? You know we almost stay in SunnyHill during our free time, most of our dates was there. So why same name..." I am still talking when she interrupted me " Same name, different places! Wake up stupid!"
I didn't talk, she just dragged me inside. The waiter then gave us the menu and talked in mandarin, to my irritation I glared at my friend and signaled to talk to the waiter, but she ignored me. I have no choice but to ask him if he speaks either English or Japanese. He smiled and talked in English "Hello I am Tan, ready to serve you. Both of you are lucky to have seated right away. Most of the time this place is packed with tourists and locals." I smiled back at him and waited for Kayla to order. She ordered their variety of cake they have.
After some time, Tan served us their free tea and pastry and the cakes we ordered. I smiled looking at the pastry as I tried it, it's tasty together with the tea. The tea calms me, oh I can't wait to devour the cakes they served. Kayla giggled while looking at me "Are you calm now? You're not angry anymore?" I nodded while saying "Now, I know why this place is packed as Tan said, they serve free food."
This made Kayla burst in laughing "You really love food, don't get angry anymore okay? It's just that, you're in a bad mood and I want you to feel better by eating sweets."
"Don't worry Kaykay, I'm not angry, I'm just sentimental for a while. You know that he is someone I wanted to forget. But my memory of him is something engraved in my head and my heart. That's why I have a hard time moving on. I'm sorry."
She held my hand and said "Do you want to come with me in Korea? Do you want to work there with me?" I was shocked and as if time stopped, I felt like I will be alone again. Kayla might see me through, she said "I'm not leaving you behind, I've been thinking for a while now, and I might go back to my parents, they've been nagging me for a long time now. Lala? I looked at her, I tried to say something, but nothing came out, she then continued talking "I know that there are things you can't just leave behind, just like uncle and auntie, they might be your butler and only family left. I was speechless, she's right, I've been away from home for a very long time, maybe this will help me forget my first love and everything that's been a weight in my heart. I looked at her and said "I'm afraid… I'm not that competent, I'm still learning many things and I'm afraid that I might not be able to adapt… "
"Lala, you shut up now, I thought you're the one who's stronger here and now you're telling me this? I am childish and you're worst than me." She glared at me, and I know this time she's angry. I don't even understand myself. I'm not the person she used to know.
I left home due to the happy memories I had and it's tormenting me, for I know Papa and Mama are now gone, leaving me behind. I have Uncle Kenjie and Aunt Nozomi, they're like a family to me, they took care of me, but I left them behind. I don't even bother to look for my grandparents, if I have one, I don't know. And the question what's holding me up, it's really a mystery to me.
Kayla then flickered my forehead and said, "Stop being absent minded, maybe Lala if you allow yourself to leave Japan, you might find what you're looking for, perhaps you might find your grandparents. I know they're still alive and maybe they're looking for you too. "I smiled at her and said, if they are still alive and know where I am, why left me all alone if they've known my Dad has passed away? You know Dad is quite popular, his death was known to public."
She smiled and said "So, are you willing to come with me?"
"There you go again Kaykay, dodging the current topic, " She smiled again, I know her, she doesn't want to talk about my grandparents again, she knows that I'm irritated if that topic is brought out, about looking for them and everything that is related to the grandparents unknown to me.
"Okay, I'll try to submit my application." She halted me and said "No, need for application, my Dad scouted you remember? We will start working in his hospital, so don't worry. "
I smiled "Kaykay, they'll not discriminate there are they? They might say I used my connection that's why landed a job or something." She laughed and said "Stop talking nonsense, you're talented! Be confident! Okay? Where did that confidence of yours go?"
"I don't know, I thought you're the one who don't want leave Japan because of your fear of flying or whatever." She laughed heartily "It's not that scary after all, I have you, so I don't have to worry. It's settled the, we'll leave Japan, I'll call dad when we go back home."
After some talk, we started eating the cake she ordered. The pineapple cake is delicious, the pineapple in inside the cake that is not sour at all. It really tastes good together with the tea, this brought me back to the times, I thought I have found a home, a family I will call my own.
