Chapter 29: Back to Square One

Shit. She was getting sick. As a cyborg, it should be fine under massive G forces. But his erratic driving was not stellar. Too rough. Especially when she is hopping about the van. She feels the large metal bits slamming into his skin as her faced is slammed into his face. She hopes that none of what happened here would go out. Reminding herself of how sick some of her fans were.

She feels a huge accent, pushing her head down onto the hard custom made carbon fiber seats as Derek continued to complain of her cogs lodging into his legs. At least she didn't have to hear Ken complaining, squeezed next to Shao Lin and Maximilian who took up a lot of space.

"Shut up!" She hears Leroy, turning back to complain at Ken and Derek. Trying to concentrate weaving through the traffic on the highway amongst the colonial factories and dull houses. His van's rear wheels continued to spin with probably the whole security force from Sector B on his tail.

"Stop the car now!" He looks through the mirror, an electric, red race car that he recognized was part of Lino's collection, speeding away from the black cars and army jeeps like a rocket ship. Seriously, they are allowed to use those? Man that was nice. At most the best equipment The Light of Men accepted would only be scramblers amongst armored trucks with only armored windows. Not even blast proof. Sure they can use their own vehicles, but sports cars would never be owned and given by an organization like theirs.

The race car speeds up to his van, attempting to slam the van out of commission and towards a semi with it's heavy load. Pistols drawn, attempting to shoot his classic custom F1 tires.

"I apologize for this," he slams the race car into the semi. Unable to overtake it. With one last push, he hears the truck horn, covering their bloodcurdling screams as they slide underneath the semi trailer. Instantly crushing the Audi under its tires with the truck driver begin to swerve erratically. One of the tires had burst and the driver was unskilled.

"Hmm..." he grunted as the truck swerved uncontrollably, slamming into several lampposts and flipping after a hatch failed to get out of the way, crushing its rear into nothing but piles of a moving pancake. He hoped that they were not hurt, unlike the people who attacked him. In front, he sees a gap to move through.

"Finally."

He speeds up, the van's roof barely scrapping the metal bars as the truck crashed down. Blocking both sides of the highway. He yelled in succession of their escape. No one was able to catch them now. However Max did not feel the same.

He hated to kill. As much as he has enough firepower to do so, he didn't want to do so. It was too brutal for him. Especially ever since his brother's murder. It was a vow of inaction. That was why he loved being in The Light of Men. But now that it was technically gone. He wonders where their humanity has gone.

This thought was however dashed when he felt a sudden jerk of the racing brakes, slamming into the bucket seat like hitting a wall at full speed. In front of them, the mono-eyed machine began to emerged out of it's active camouflage. It's bazooka drawn directly down at the vehicle as it's rather slender body pranced, prepared for an attack.

"Look, you guys may not know me. But Victor does. He definitely would wish that you would just stay. So for his sake. Just surrender-"

Without any hesitation, Leroy slam on the accelerator upon hearing the young guy's words. It's tires skidding along as a shot is fired, shattering the windows with bright ambers close behind. With a sigh of relief, he pressed on. Still rather worried for the duo stuck in their miserable chambers. He looks back. Alfred completely calm and chill for such a situation. Amazing. He peers at him with his boney shoulders upright. Always like the leader he was.

Damm it what is he thinking? He sighs as he peers up ahead at the rather distracted driver as he bobbed and weaved. He always trusted them not just because of their leadership. But because when they are in a pickle, they will always find a way out. The same was for Victor and Atsuki. He sighed as he looked at his watch. The hand moving at speed. They probably were out. He sighs. At the sound of time running away, he reminds himself of his failure of protecting them.

"What happens if they finally know?"

"Oh this is bullying..." Eddy watched on. Swapping out the bazooka for a modified rifle at the speeding van. Though his work was not easy. The van still was able to go fast enough to evade fire. It was ridiculous. What was it even powered by? Let alone a van like a Honda won't be able to scream and spit fire on its side. With only three shots left, he put down his weapon to catch up. Eyeing on their positions. But this was not to be. He is the only one sent out. No one will come. He is after all supposed to finish the job while Yan has his lunch.

"My leader will definitely kill me at this rate..." he jittered, now more than ever as they directly hit up the end of the road. The only bridge between Sector A and B found at the shortest width between the river, now broken into rubble. But in its destruction, he spots billboard, flipped over into a ramp. It had somehow not been dismantled yet during the conflict.

"Oh hell no!"

He watches the van slams into the fences, shattering its headlights. Men guarding the place scrambled to shoot the van as it head full speed ahead.

He takes aim, firing one shot. It hit straight on point, but was too slow. He watched in desperation as the van flew over the rubble. Barely scrapping its rear as it crash land onto the ground. Sparks flying with parts of the front bumper now falling to pieces.

His robot had failed. No... he failed. He can't get them now. The United Union was already there. If they attack now, all the peace talks would be for naught. With a loud slam on the controls, he flies away, looking back disgraced in defeat.

"We made it!" Hanson looked on pleased to be in one piece, though one look back at Shane says otherwise. An instinct to kill one man. He turns back and changes to topic. To the future.

"But now where do we go?"

"I know where this place is," everyone turns to look at Alfred. All freshened up compared to everyone else as he continued, "Just go further down the highway."

He directs Leroy down an exit as they disembarked close to a dirt road. Leroy pats on the van. It was technically new, but they had fond memories. He pats the van on the scorched roof. Telling the car to not feel sad, after all, he would return for her. He turns around to see Baku, still sore at her awkward position as she fell onto the mud by the custom sliding doors.

"Oh come on. My electronics would be jammed!"

She shrugs off the mud, attempting to see if her electronics had clogged while Alfred leads them on, slowly.

A few steps into the pine wood forests and they saw the rather crude remains of the battle and an instant delight. To him and only him. His parked Mercedes amongst abandoned army Land Rover and Port L Lambeths amongst old colonial buildings. Sure it was rather dusty after rain, but they were back in square one. They couldn't care less. They took turns, choosing who can enter the vehicle. Derek was rather excited to sit in the Mercedes to Baku's annoyance. It was once in a lifetime. He looks at Sylvie, staring up into the rather humid and moody sky. Flustered and worried for the duo.

"No one is going to die on my watch."
