Chapter 13: Midnight is a Dark Time

The tree we found Aysh under seemed to be glowing in the light of the full moon. She glanced up from her folded hands, and smiled lightly. She stood as we got closer to her and whispered,

"Hello sister," and I looked at her incredulously, but she just continued, "I asked you here at midnight because this is the only time that Alastor will let me out. He never wants me to leave, so I stay in the castle at all times. At midnight, he has set up a way from my soul to leave my body, and roam around the gardens. Only someone related to me can see me right now."

"How come I can see you then?" Erik said, slightly confused.

"Because I consider you a brother. You are also "dating" my sister, and surprisingly that counts."

"You're my sister, but how come I have no recollection of you? I at least remember Alastor, but not you..." I said.

"In our family, once you reach the age of 18 and you have a sibling under you, then you must leave the house, so the younger child will have room to grow in our small house. Sadly, mother and father went to a seer for all of us, before we were born, to see what we might become, and name us accordingly. My name means "Dream" and "Gift of the Lord". After I moved out, I became a dream interpreter at a church. People would come to me, wondering what their dreams meant, believing they were messages from God. I was never very good at it, and simply made up something that their dreams reminded me of. The church kept me there, because I was their biggest source of money, since so many people came to me, hoping to get their dreams interpreted. Alastor's name means... "Tormentor" and "Affliction"." My eyes widened, wondering what that could mean, and what my name could mean.

"So Alastor Cessair... is going to torment someone, and cause affliction?" Erik asked.

"Not exactly. That is not Alastor, that man in the throne. That is a dark spirit from a mirror, deep within the castle. Alastor found this castle, and the mirror, and it promised him anything he wanted in exchange for his most important thing. He gave himself, instead of you. He had already found me at the church, and asked me to live with him in this castle, before he discovered the mirror. He didn't tell me he found the mirror before he hid me away in the dungeons, and gave me the Midnight Gift so I could be free, without letting the spirit know about me. What our brother didn't realize, is that because the spirit comes from the mirror, anything that goes into it is trapped there, and the mirror has access to it at anytime. The mirror can see Alastor's memories, and use that against us both." Aysh explained.

"So that's why he looks different. It's a mirror version of him. That's why Mirror Alastor has a major temper, and seems to be emotionally unstable. He's not as kind and he once was, and doesn't look the same. We need to find that mirror, and get my real brother back." I said, set with determination. I glanced at Erik who had been silent for a while. He looked angry, and confused, but when he noticed my gaze, he quickly schooled it into neutrality. I looked back at Aysh, and she quickly started fading.

"It must be 1:00. Find me. Trust no one. Good luck." she said, and faded away. I glanced at Erik, and saw that he was conflicted about something, but before I could ask, I heard a faint growl behind us. I turned and saw one of those monsters prowling the garden behind us. It hadn't seen us just yet, so I quickly ushered Erik away, and once we were out of range, the two of us ran back into the castle, through the side door we had found before, and bid eachother a quick goodnight, before slipping into our respective rooms, and falling into a deep, calming sleep.
