Looking back on it, I told myself that things could've been way worse. I could've accidentally set Danger on fire. Or worse, he could've destroyed my voice recorder.
As I walked back into the castle however, I still felt paranoid. I couldn't fight the urge to look over my shoulder. I knew he wasn't after me. But I kept thinking. What if he suddenly shows up? Then what do I do? Cry? What if he tries to have me arrested for burning his hand?
"Glad!" A voice yelled out my name and I jumped. I looked to my right, and coming down the castles grand staircase was my sister. She was wearing a short frilly yellow dress, paired with obnoxious pink shoes, and a pink headband to match.
"What the what are you wearing?" I asked.
She rolled her eyes then smiled. "My new uniform, for the museum!" She said enthusiastically.
My sister had obtained her citizenship and started her new job today. She worked at the newest Domivian tourist attraction, the Odd Museum. It was supposed to be quirky and showcase the goofier side of Domivia, like the a doll with two heads that supposedly belong to the first and last queen of Domivian.
If she wanted to she could have made plans to leave the castle. But she said she wouldn't leave me. All the more reason I tried to step out of my comfort zone and get an interview with Danger so the High Council would have to think twice about possibly denying me citizenship. Although ironically the interview is what put off me finishing my report sooner.
My sisters report had been about the Riker Family. The Riker's were a family with a long history connected to the Domivian High Council. Clara Riker sat on the High Council as a member to this day, and before her was her father, before him Clara's grandmother and so on and so on.
In hindsight, it was a good idea to butter up one of the people who made the decision on whether or not we would get to stay here. Too bad I didn't think of it first.
"What's with you? Danger turned you down?" She asked as she studied my expression.
I shook my head. "No....he just, wasn't what I was expecting him to be." I lied. My sister had always been protective of me. If she found out that Danger freaked me out so much that I used my powers on him, she'd probably try and storm over there. After what I'd just done to him, that was the last thing we needed.
"Aww," she said with a small frown. "I'm sorry Gladie, I knew he'd be an ass. All those wins went to his head I bet." She added with a shrug.
"Yeah, I guess you're right." I agreed. "Anyway I won't hold you, have a great first day, hopefully when I see you again my report will be all done."
She grinned."You got this! Good luck." She gave me a quick hug and scurried out the entrance of the castle.
I trudged up two flights of stairs to the room I shared with my sister. The room was nice, I couldn't deny that. The silky sheets were probably worth more than anything I'd ever owned in my life. There was an intricate golden light fixture that bathed the room in a soft white light. The carpet was soft and fluffy. Everything about this place screamed expensive. But I wasn't happy here. There was no freedom. We had an extreme curfew in place that we weren't allowed to miss not even once. We weren't allowed visitors. We had to get express permission to leave the castle (often times were were denied said permission). And we couldn't even explore 90% of our new "home". Not to mention that we were constantly reminded that if we set a foot out of line that we would be sent back to Astyria before we could even process what was happening. And the worst of it all was the drills.
Because the castle was home to a lot of expensive history and heirlooms, and a lot of important people lived here, not counting my sister and I of course, there were random drills that took place at random times of the week. When it happened, no matter what we were doing we had to drop everything and run to the nearest bunker and stay there until we were given the all clear. The shortest amount of time we spent in a bunker was fifteen minutes, the longest was four hours. Although to be fair, that was because there was a malfunction with the drill system and they couldn't get the bunker doors open until it was fixed.
Maybe calling the castle a prison was a bit dramatic, but it felt like one more and more everyday. My sister didn't even get any extra freedoms when she got her citizenship approved because she still lived in the castle.
I pulled out my digital pad and tried to finish my report. But I was stuck. I wanted to include Danger's interview so badly but considering the way it ended I figured he probably wouldn't want me to anymore. I was at a loss and ultimately decided to write two versions. One with Danger and one without.
Once I was all finished the sun was setting. I decided I liked the report with Danger in it better. His part perfectly tied in the past of the Matches with the Present and gave insight on a possible future for them. But I ended on choosing the report without Danger. I didn't want anymore trouble. Honestly all I wanted to do was pretend like he didn't even exist anymore.
Reports are hard.
