"Okay final question, what made you into the person you are today? what made you want to fight?" I asked.
He was quiet for a long while after I asked it. He chewed on his bottom lip and closed his eyes again after a while.
"If it's too personal we can end it right here." I added quickly.
He opened his eyes again and turned his head slowly to look at me.
"I know you said this wouldn't be published anywhere," he started,"but who exactly will see this?" he asked with a small frown on his face.
"As far as I know just Zama Cartor and some people who are apart of the High Council." I said with baited breath. Zama Cartor may have given me a second chance at life, and the Domivian High Council may have been really kind in letting me and my sister enter the country, but that didnt change the fact that I knew neither of these people weren't exactly popular with the public.
I hadn't even been in Domivia a full month before I started to catch on. Anytime I'd mention Zama's name outside of the castle I'd get sneered at or someone would roll their eyes. And that's nothing compared to how much the public despised a lot of the decisions the High Council made. "High Council Hits New Low," was another headline that was often recycled.
I figured one or the other had to have been on Danger's shit list. But he surprised me once again by just nodding silently. If I went by his reaction alone I'd think he'd never even heard of Zama or the High Council. He kept his expression blank and I couldn't read him. But after another long bought of silence he finally started to answer my question.
"When I was a kid I wanted to be an Enforcer. I kind of feel like at one point every kid wants to do something like that. Keep the peace, wear a nice suit, get cool medals, all that stuff," he said with a sad look in his eyes, "but then, when I was around 11…something bad happened, I-I'm not gonna get into it but, it really opened my eyes to the fact that the people who get paid to protect us, really don't give a damn about us." His clenched his jaw when he said that last part, he closed his eyes and let out another deep breath before he continued.
"After that, I guess you could say I became obsessed with fighting. In my mind I figured I could do a better job looking out for my family than a bunch of puppets who only want to help people if they figure they'll get a raise out of it." He sat up again and I flinched.
The air was charged, and I felt tense again. My shoulders were sore from clenching up, I could see him getting angrier and angrier after every word. And I considered it a bad sign that he was pacing the room with his hands balled into fists. He seemed to forget I was there and was reliving whatever moment turned him away from his dreams of being an Enforcer.
"Uh Danger," I said shakily, I stood up too now as he stopped and looked in my direction. "It's okay, alright? We can stop here. I can tell we're getting into some territory that maybe we shouldn't" I said and he cut me off.
"Oh can you?" He asked mocking my voice. I frowned again as he shook his head. "Done using me already? I'll give you points for being quick about it." He snapped.
This was what I had been afraid of the second I stepped in his room. They were right, he could go from zero to one hundred in the blink of an eye. And if that was true, based on the stories I'd heard about him when he went on a rampage, the way he was acting was a very mild version of his of his usual explosions. But I wasn't going to stick around for him to really go off.
"Yes." I said firmly, mustering up all the courage I could. "I don't think it's fair that you're taking your anger out on me like this. But either way, thank you for your time, I really appreciate you meeting with me, I'll see myself out." I said. I cut off my voice recorder and I started to walk towards the door but he blocked my way.
"You think I'm stupid? He asked, his left eye twitched a little. "You think I don't know how you're gonna spin this in your report? As if I don't already know the shit everyone talks about me behind my back." His voice was barely a whisper, and he was way too close for comfort. He then reached for my voice recorder and I snatched my arm out of the way. "Danger please stop!" I said but be shoved my shoulder hard in retaliation and I tripped and fell backwards over the chair I was just sitting in and landed on the ground.
He reached again for my recorder that I was still clutching in my left hand. This time he pinned my hand to the ground and attempted to pry the recorder from my fingers. When I tried to push him away he put his knee in my chest to keep me at bay, knocking the air out of me in the process and making it hard to breathe.
That was when I lost it.
I used my powers on him. It wasn't intentional. I wasn't trying to start any trouble, but I panicked. I burned his hand. He cried out in pain and jerked away from me. Then I heated up the air around us and Danger started to suffocate from the extreme heat. He doubled over above me in a coughing fit. He clutched his ribs and covered his mouth.
I scrambled up off the ground and ran out of his room. I half expected his door guard to be there, but he wasn't. So I sped out of the arena as quick as I could, and I didn't look back.
"I'm insane but on my toes
I could keep the world balanced on my nose"
