Chapter 4: Chapter 1: “Precious Little Oreo”

The fog comforts me.

In a sense where I know that at least I'm not alone.

That something so pure-looking,

Something so highly looked upon could stoop so low as to even glide through the decaying leaves, to whisper against the weighed stones, and to even touch the dirt.

"Are you even listening?"

Jarredd's dark and cloudy eyes met the bright blue ones that belonged to Katherine.

He slowly rose one brow, though his face still stayed void of any emotion, and said, "Does your mouth ever stop running?"

Katherine's lips curled up into a sneer but none the less, stayed silent.

Her glaring eyes followed Jarredd as he stood up across the table from her, seemingly oblivious to her burning stare.

"Her last name's apparently Addens," Katherine grumbled before she abruptly stood from her seat, the screetching noise of the chair's legs scratching the floor was nearly deafening in the empty library.

 "I'll-"

"Must be a rich girl then," Jarredd hummed as he schemed his fingers from the visible spine of one book to another.

Katherine was silent for a while, battling with herself if she should tell him now or maybe another time.

Stopping on a navy blue colored book with bronze letterings that read "The Phoenix of the Yorghein Academy," Jarredd spoke to Katherine in a low voice, "She's rich," he said in a rhetorical question.

He didn't need an answer to it, because he already had an idea of where this was going to lead.

Katherine shook her head, like she was trying to convince herself not to believe it, "No, definitely not," her fingers traced the soft edge of the table, "The Addens Comic Company or the A.C.C., is a small company that originated from Pennsylvania."

Jarredd flipped over the fist couple of pages of the book, his eyes quickly scanning the créme area dotted with black letterings.

He looked up after a while to lock with hues of blues, "There's something else, Katherine, that you're not telling me," he said knowingly with a slight warning tone and coldness swirling in his eyes.

Katherine let out a string of curses as she breathed out a groan she didn't even know was stuck deep in her throat, "Yeah, well it's either that or she's... the Kingcess of New York."

"Meaning..?" Jarredd asked, although it didn't need to be answered. He knew what she was talking about, or rather, who.

He has met the Kingcess once. In a party that was thrown by his father in celebration of their partnership with the Mandellias, a company of very high status.

Of course, being partnered with a company that has maintained it's place on the very top of the business industry ever since it's first few months of being formed, is something that was to be celebrated.

Katherine sighed and stared at the two rings on her pinky finger, "It means she might be a tough competition and..." Katherine trailed off.

"With her strong influence," Jarredd continued, " and the current rate of her making successful transactions with powerful people, the uproar of the media involving her name, and the status and reputation she's being labeled with..."

Katherine nodded defeatedly, "She's technically going to be a better..."

"Fiancé? Yes," Katherine flinched at Jarredd's blunt words.

A sudden slam of a book closing resonated in the air along with Jarredd's body turning around to look at Katherine who was trying to avoid eye contact.

"Look at me," his deep voice said causing small goosebumps to spread across her arms. Her legs would've also failed her of being able to maintain her balance if only her fists weren't clenching the edge of the table tightly.

Her eyes, filled with insecurities, met Jarredd's.

"No," was his short reply before walking intimidatingly back towards the table and sliding down onto his seat.

"What?" Katherine asked in a shocked whisper.

Jarredd opened the book once again, flipping a few more pages before finally settling on one to read silently.

"I know that you don't love me," Katherine made a strange noise from the back of her throat, "and vice versa. But I'm not going to mary someone I don't even know."

Katherine shook her head, "Yeah but what if? "

"No."

"Your dad's goi-"

"If she'll get involved, and if history would decide to repeat itself... she would most likely die in the end," his voice took a cold edge.

"Look, J.-"

"Paging, hello, hello? Paging: For all members of the Royal Thirteen, please proceed to classroom number East-5 asap. I repeat, to all members of the Royal Thirteen, please proceed to classroom E5 asap. Thank you."

A barely there smirk appeared on Jarredds face before a look of pure seriousness took over his features, Katherine mirroring the same cold expression.

"Can't believe he got her that quick," Katherine said nonchalantly, pulling her hair from the neat bun on her head and ruffling her hair before standing up fully from her sloutched position on the table and started walking towards the library's wide open door.

She looked past her shoulders to Jarredd who was still seated on his chair, eyes roaming the page of the book he was reading.

"Are you coming or..."

Jarredd stood up, holding the now closed book in one hand and the other in his pocket.

"You three are always dragging me and everyone else into such useless meatings," he muttered under his breath as he passed Katherine by the door.

Her voice sounded from behind him along with the clinking of heels against the marble floor, "Remind me why I'm arranged to marry you again?"

The only reply she recieved was a small shrug.

There was a long silence as they walked through the crowded part of the hallway together.

The stares of the other students becoming nothing more than the usual.

Jesy fiddled with the scrunchie that was aggressively clinging onto her wrist, leaving bright red blotches of areas where the band was too tight against her skin.

Her face was twisted into a nervous frown while she bit her lower lip, back hunched over as her elbows propped up on her knees, shook along with her bouncing feet.

She was anxious.

This is it. This is real. I'm really going crazy now, yeah.

She shifted her gaze from her worn shoes to outside the window.

The thin misty fog that had fallen blanketed the surrounding area while rays of early sunlight peeked through.

For a second it was was able to calm her down, before thoughts clouded her brain again.

Sighing, she returned back to her previous antics.

"You know it's just eighteen months, right?" Her eyes darted to the woman sitting beside her.

"I doubt eighteen months would be long enough to fix me," She stated barely louder than that of a whisper.

"You're Jesy! C'mon!" The woman beside Jesy nudged her shoulder, "Have faith in your sister for once."

Memories of that night replayed once again.

"I used to," And she did, she really did. She had hoped to see her and talk to her personally–but when she finally did... She could barely even try to think of it without draining all her emotions away.

"Stop that."

Jesy looked at her sister quizzically, "Stop what?"

"Stop thinking about it."

"How do you know I'm thinking about it? I could be thinking about Orion right now."

Her sister's face softened at the mention of Orion, "However cute it is that you're thinking about him, I'm pretty sure the look of murder doesn't exactly say Orion."

Jesy's body went rigid as her sisters' became stiff.

Seeming to notice her mistake, Jesy's sister began blubbering words of apology, "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it like that. Please don't get mad. I meant to sa-"

"It's fine," She mumbled, more to herself than to her sister, her focus back onto her shoes.

Her sister bit the tip of her tongue.

She knew that if she spoke again, another slip up would happen. She tends to do it quite a lot, and she knows it. Although her slip ups are usually hilarious, now isn't the time.

And she very well knew it.

A yellow note slipped past under the thin space between the leather back rest of the seat in front her her.

A small smile that someone could've mistook for pursed lips crept up Jesy's face as she took the folded piece of paper and stuffed it up her legs, through her jeans.

The car slows to a stop.

Jesy looks up from her slouched position to the rearview mirror where she saw the man behind the wheel looking at her.

She offered a tiny wink before averting her eyes to the open window beside her to confirm that they had finally arrived.

She ran her fingers through her frizzy hair and blocked out all her thoughts before she reached out her shaking hand to press on a button that was on the side of the door to unlock it but to her surprise, it didn't open when she tugged at the leaver.

A laugh rumbled from the man who sat in front of her as the designated driver, "It's locked, you know."

Jesy pressed on the button again before pulling at the leaver once more and this time, the door slid opened when she pulled at the leaver.

With a laugh, she slipped out of the car and shut the door with a small thud. She couldn't bring herself to thank him because she knew the second she tried to utter a word, vulnerability would come seeping out and past her lips.

The feeling of warm blood rushing back into her veins made her legs wobbly and unstable as the soles of her shoes met the concrete ground.

She internally sighed at the thought of standing up. It had been almost five hours and a half since they got in the car.

In front of her were two huge black gates that were connected to polished concrete walls on either side. There wasn't even a single scratch or dent, or even chipping paint.

Instantly, a familiar feeling of uncomfortability came to Jesy, making her want to turn back around and ask the driver to drive her and her sister back home.

The single thought of being in such a prestigious school as someone like Jesy in itself was nauseating.

She knew it, and yet she still came. She knew she would be treated differently, she knew she would be an outcast, she knew she wasn't going to fit in.

No, not someone like Jesy.

A school where people of high ranking go to wouldn't just accept someone who came from a background Jesy came from.

Someone like Jesy would only be able to enter either through connections or her brain, maybe even both.

Although she did have the brains to enter just like how everyone in this school was built to be, she was sure that she still wouldn't fit in.

A sudden ring of a phone sounded from behind Jesy, snapping her out of her thoughts.

"Shoot!" Her sister exclaimed.

Jesy's body unconsciously started to stiffen, except for her hands that were severely shaking and her heart that was going a million light-years per second.

"Jee, I really need to go. Papa's waiting for me at home and we have to go get Mama after she gets her 'precious little Oreo,'" Without turning around, Jesy wished her sister a simple goodbye.

There were footsteps that sounded like they were walking away from her, followed by a gentle opening and shutting of a car door.

Finally able to tear her eyes off the Academy's crest that gleemed under the morning light on top of the gates, she turned around just in time to see her sister offer her a small wave from the window.

Jesy watched as the car sped down the road until it finally disappeared as it rounded a corner.

You could still hear the frequent soft rumbling of the car in the distance but as soon as it faded below hearing point, everything was silent.

So silent that only the soft thump of her heart beating was all she could hear.

The area was peaceful, the complete opposite of what was going on inside her head but still peaceful in the outside none the less.

That was, until someone spoke from behind her.

"What the-"
