Chapter 9: WHAT!?!
Sera stood there in complete disbelief. On the outside she seemed cool and collected, but on the inside she was totally freaking out. "What!?!" She gasped and took a few steps away. Right when she was going to turn and rush out, Lucien was standing there with his icy stare. Also Luna had just arrived with a concerned look on her face. "This situation seems serious, everything alright?" She asked sympathetically. All Sera could do was just stare blankly at everyone. Her emotions were on a rollercoaster. First she was angry then shocked and now she's apprehensive.
'What in the actual fuck!?! Who does shit like this to their kid? I can understand not wanting me to get mixed with the wrong crowd, but sheltering me?!' Her thoughts were racing. "I know this is a major shock, but this party tonight is to honor your engagement and your coming out party. Most young witches do it at 16, but we wanted you to have a normal childhood without magic or troubles." Her mom reached to console her, but she wanted nothing to do with her beloved mom for the time being. Her gaze fixed onto Lucien and she looked somewhat ferocious. "So, you knew too!?!" Sera accused him. He quickly responded, "I knew about the engagement, but I found out only a few hours ago you weren't properly trained in the magical arts." How is it a stranger knew more about her life than she did.
She felt like a bomb went off inside her head. How is she supposed to react? She looked at her dad and gave him an almost animal like helpless look. She looked at her mother again and a tear ran down her cheek. Lucien quickly sprang into action, took out his handkerchief, and gently patted away the tear. "Thank you." She tried to smile, but the pain was evident on her face. "We should have told you before the party, but you girls were having such a good time upstairs and we didn't want to ruin your mood." Luna spoke gently like a feather. "Ruin my mood?! Don't you think you're ruining it now?!" Sera said incredulously. Her parents were at a loss for words. Did they have a good explanation? "Honey, we did it to protect you. The magical world is dangerous and a lot of young witches die each year doing simple training exercises. We love you so much we were just acting selfish. Please forgive us?" Her dad begged. The look of desperation on his face was almost comical and it made her giggle internally. "I'm not sure when I will forgive you, but it will happen eventually." She stated without much emotion.
The air was getting warm and the room began to feel like it was shrinking. She looked around for an exit, but she knew there really wasn't an escape from her life. "I'm thirsty. I think I am going to go and get a drink. Maybe go take something for this headache that's starting. Lucien put his hands near each of her ears and said something under his breath. Suddenly her headache disappeared like it was never there. "Oh wow, that's a neat trick." Sera announced sort of sarcastically. Lucien raised an eyebrow, but didn't feed into the trap.
"Come with me and I'll introduce you to people." Lucien extended his hand to allow Sera to take it. Looking from face to face, Sera decided to humor him and then took his hand. He was her fiancé after all and he seemed to be the most trustworthy out of the lot before her. He then got a triumphant look on his face and then strode off with Sera on his arm. It didn't take long to get into the groove of the party. Each group she met was just as nice as the last, but people were stunned at the charisma this couple before them had. The room started slowly gawking at them like they were zoo animals. A few women sneered since Lucien should be with them, but they dare not say. It was rumored that Lucien was already arranged into a marriage, but rumors can be false. Right?
