The Federation

Mean while on the fringes of the Kappa Delta Galaxy.

A young man clout in a white naval uniform was sitting in the crowded bridge of the Federation outworld monitoring post. He was positioned at a control panel full of various monitors and measurement devices. The monitors showed a variety of radar images and measurement graphs. The graphs illustrated the release of various types of energies throughout the areas monitored by this station, the type, size and time of spike of the energy were all displayed. As he was diligently monitoring the control panel, a series of beeps sounded, and a warning message flared up onto each of the monitors.

Alarmed by the sudden changes the man, Private First-Class Jenkins, began frantically checking the controls and typing into the system. The warning messages kept flaring on most of the monitors, however on one monitor a large spike of energy was highlighted and on another the estimated position of the spike was identified. These monitors referred to one of the dark space energy measuring probes and due to the peculiarities of dark space, it as almost impossible to pinpoint the exact location of the spike. Despite this, the type, size and time since the spike were all well recorded.

"That can't be right…" mumbled Private Jenkins, as he continued to furiously type away and verify his information.

"Commander Daniels, I think you're going to want to see this" he called out through the bridge. Commander Daniels was a tall and handsome man with a very muscular build. His build was unusually big for someone of his level, normally the Naval Commanders spent most of their time training their minds or engaging in their new found privileges and freedoms that their ranks allowed them. This usually led to them losing the battle ready physique and obtaining a much plumper one. However, this was not the case with Commander Daniels, he still trained his body regularly and thoroughly. He believed that only through honing his body could he truly hone his mind and be prepared for battle. This strong belief and unusual frame gave him an overwhelming presence and commanded the respect of all those that served with him. His overwhelming presence was increased further by his piecing blue eyes that could piece a man to the very core. Commander Daniels walked over to the control panel and questioned Jenkins.

"What am I looking at Private?"

"Sir, there has been a ginormous energy spike coming from the Epsilon 12 system of the Mew Psi galaxy. It was relayed back through one of our dark space monitoring systems."

"Shit…that's a big spike…" escaped from the Commander's lips as he interrogated the monitors.

"Do we know what type of energy it is? When did it occur?" he continued.

"The system is currently trying to determine if the energy signal matches any of the ones in the database. The signal looks like it was received -" before Private Jenkins could finish, the search had returned a result and the name Ekasala was flashing on all the monitors.

"Fuck, when did you say the spike occurred?"

"Three months ago, sir."

"How long until we can get boots on the ground?"

"Sir, we have a few different forces within a dark space jump of the system. We have a recon crew three months out, an assault battalion four months out and a Worldbreaker class destroyer five months out."

Recon crews consisted of small teams of between 10 to 50 soldiers that specialised in reconnaissance, stealth, creating unrest and sabotage. They usually travelled in smaller ships that had advanced cloaking systems and could avoid all but the most advanced radar detection. They were often deployed ahead of the main force to scout out the terrain and forces and to create civil unrest to distract to the home forces. The crew members all travelled light, they minimised their tactical armour and preferred to equip long range or silenced weapons. Conversely, the assault battalions were less stealth and precision and more of a blunt force hammer. They were sent in after the recon crew had done their work to mop up the enemy forces and crush all resistance in their path. The battalions travelled in much larger and heavily armed ships. The ships sported twenty-centimetre-thick naval tungsten steel hulls and an assortment of bombardment and ship to ship weapons. The crew consisted of between 400 to 600 shock troops that all sported medium to heavy tactical armour and a variety of hard-hitting weapons. The exact specifics of their loadouts depended on both their missions and the company they came from. The more advanced companies like the Gamma company were more heavily armed than most of the others, some companies had power suits and some like the Alpha company had religious imagery all over their armour. Finally, the Worldbreaker class destroyers did exactly what their name alludes to, they destroy worlds. The ships were approximately two kilometres long and their sole purpose was the housing of the Worldbreaker cannon. A two kilometre long railgun that was able to propel 1000 tonne hardened steel shell to speeds of 1 million kilometres/hour. The shell would move with such momentum that it could pierce straight through a planet, causing the planet to destabilise and disintegrate. This was the trump card of the Federation and they had gained universal fear ever since they were used to eradicate worlds that rebelled against the Federation.

"Any others in the area Private?"

"No sir, just those three. Who should we send, sir?"

"All of them. Hopefully that will be enough…"

"Sir, are you sure that's not overkill?"

"Have you ever heard the name Ekasala before Private?"

"No sir, I only know that it flags up in our database as a AAA threat sir."

"Then trust me when I say, that if he has come back to full strength then...then....even the Worldbreakers will have great difficulty." Strained Commander Daniels as the full gravity of the situation dawned upon him. He was fortunate to have never faced Ekasala directly in battle, but he had been trained by soldiers and commanders who had. They all shared the same experience, complete despair that came from being so powerless to do anything in the face of his overwhelming power. His name was synonymous with death and despair throughout the Federation's Navy. Many said that facing him was like looking the Reaper in the eye and waiting for judgement to be passed. The majority of those who faced him never returned and those that did had mental scars carved so deeply into their psyche that they were never able to return to front line duties again. All his knowledge from the academy and rumours throughout the Federation caused a cold sweat to form on his back and forehead. For the first time he was thankful that he had been stationed on this monitoring station, far away from the front and the action.

Commander Daniels instructed his crew to contact the three crews within question and have them begin their preparations for the dark space jumps to the location of the energy spike. <The recon crew will arrive in three months, that'll be six months after spike. Hopefully, he hasn't regained too much strength by then, surely, he wouldn't have.> Commander Daniels thought to himself or more accurately wishfully hoped. As he was pondering their current situation and the next move, a troubling thought jumped to the front of his mind.

<What if we weren't the only ones to pick up the signal or even first ones. If they get to him first, this is going to get really complicated…>

"Private Jenkins, I want you to monitor the dark space activity and check for any signs of jumps to the system. I want you to notify me of any activity as soon as it happens, regardless of the time. Am I understood?"

"Sir, yes, sir!"

With his mind at somewhat at ease, Commander Daniels went about informing all his superiors about the recent discoveries and developments. Their responses were the exact mixture of fear, concern and confusion that he had expected. No one in the Federation had ever expected him to return or even thought it possible. They expected him to live out his days on some unknown planet and simply cease to be an issue for them. None of the officials knew his exact location since after he surrendered and they imprisoned him, it was decided that no one should know his location so that it couldn't be uncovered, and he couldn't be returned to his normal state. The whole project had been completed in the utmost secrecy and the poor souls who were responsible for allocating him to a new planet and transporting him there, were executed by the Federation to prevent the information from leaking. It was risky since they had no way what of monitoring him, but they believed that it was less risky than the information of his location falling into the hands of Ravana. The secrecy allowed the Federation to take credit for killing Ekasala and bringing their brand of peace to many of the galaxies unopposed.

From his discussions with his superiors, Commander Daniels believed that they were going to assemble a fleet of Alpha Company battalions and support vessels to assault the system should the others fail. All they could do now is wait and see if the Reaper had indeed returned to full strength.
