8 Aristhaeus's dream

The archmage returned to the Castle of the Seventh Fire. His study was in one of the highest towers and he liked how birds flew so near he could almost touch them, and storms raged right over his head.

It was sunset, sun rays slowly hid from view. It was time for the archmage to visit another world… the world of dreams. To him, the transition was almost imperceptible. He belonged to the sommei race, who were known for being able to see creatures from other dimensions.

***

Even the Seventh Fire fell asleep at night, and so dreams took possession of all the towers and chambers of the Castle… They were unusually deep, like magic…

Why would one dream be forgotten, and another one would be so vivid? Who knew? But sommeis never forgot a dream of theirs. Because they lived two lives. Neither one of these two lives of Aristhaeus's could be described as dull. For him, these were just two different worlds he inhabited.

Aristhaeus was fast asleep. He could hear an unfamiliar voice, belonging to someone insolent and foolish enough to threaten him.

"A terrible nightmare I would give you, and you would fully deserve it... It is true you are powerful but you are in my domain now, and you can't help it." The voice echoed and came from a tall, thin figure, chiseled of bluish smoke, which stood still right in front of the sommei archmage's gaze. He could clearly recognize this was a spirit guardian!

Spirit guardians protected people, families or sometimes whole nations.

A spirit guardian! But there was something unusual about this one. Never – ever – before in his whole experience had Aristhaeus seen an ordinary invisible being in possession of so much power… as that one! ...So strong spirit guardians simply did not exist!

Yet, this one was right there, in front of Aristhaeus's very eyes!

"I admit I've never seen anything like you," he declared in a cool tone.

It seemed as if the spirit did not hear him. Near them, there was literally nothing else – neither ground, nor sky or any objects. It was just the two of them immersed in indefinite space.

"If you dare do anything to her, you will feel the power of my imperceptible touch! I am stronger than all spirit guardians, and – stronger than you, too."

Despite the creature's might, Aristhaeus was not afraid. No. Guardians could only guard, but they were unable to attack first. Nothing unexpected could happen to him... right?

He had messed with many spirits. But there was something uncommon in the appearance of this one, which immediately drew his attention. The spirit had an amulet. Spirits wore jewelry only if it was the source of their energy. The amulet seemed quite powerful.

...Morning came together with a puff of wind that brought into the room the fragrance of spring flowers from the garden. A fragrance so wonderful as if it came from a dream yet it reminded the archmage it was time to return to the other reality…

As Aristhaeus woke up, he was truly puzzled. What was the spirit guardian talking about? He tried to remember if he'd done anything that could have been the reason for this visit, but he couldn't connect it to any of his recent experiences.
