Chapter 2: New Home

As the sun sets in the horizon, Lily took one last look around her house. Her parents died when she was young and she lived with his aunt and uncle. They were very caring and protective as if she was their real daughter. She was grateful she was raised with love and support.

Lily decided with Rachel few months ago that she will go to Berlin and pursue a medical degree. After discussing with her aunt and uncle, they approved. It was a big jump too. She worked part time as a office worker which doesn't pay high salary but she wanted to challenge herself. Lily knew she had to step up her game and stop being naive. Although she was still a bit naive but she swore that she won't be as naive after she comes back.

Her aunt and uncle hugged Lily one last time before she goes away. They gave her a small gift in a box and told her to open it later on. Lily smiled and hugged them.

"I'll miss you. Please take care." Lily looked out of the window and waved back at them. She will miss their laughs and jokes as well as the food at home. Lily promised herself that she will change. It won't be overnight but she will persevere.

On the way to the airport, she listened to her playlist on her phone. She had tears in her eyes unknowingly. The song reminded her of the time she was with Marcus. She wiped away her tears and reminded herself that she can become stronger.

"Miss, we are at the airport." Lily thanked the taxi driver and paid him full in cash.

The taxi driver was nice enough to help her with her luggages. As she went inside and checked in, she waited to board the plane.

Lily opened up the small box that was given to her by her aunt and uncle.

"Wow, such a beautiful watch." The watch was blue and white in color with shiny sparkles. Lily placed it back into the box because she was afraid that she will lose it.

After few hours of waiting, it was finally time to board the plane. Many people were already lining up. She got up and took her luggage. After sending goodbye texts to her friends and family, she took a deep breath.

"You can't back off now, Lily. You chose this road to change yourself. Do not give up." She felt much better after giving herself some pep talk.

~

Her past with Marcus had been memorable one. They dated for four years but Marcus never mentioned anything about marriage after college. Lily sighed, she should've known better. Marcus is already in the past, time to move forward, she gave herself another pep talk and shook off the thoughts.

Although, people considered her naive because she trusted people too easily, she wanted to improve herself in that very aspect. She needed to be on her guard when in Berlin. Not too many people are there to help, some people lie and they will hurt you.

When she sat down on her assigned seat on the plane, a foreign young man sat beside her. He gave her a smile and she smiled back. She looked outside the small window and took one last look of her hometown. She will come back after becoming a good physician.

The foreign young man was in his twenties. He had blonde hair and handsome feature. His Chinese was surprisingly good when he asked the flight attendant about the flight times. Lily was shocked by his fluency.

"Did you study Chinese here?" She asked in broken English.

"Yes. For two years." He replied back in English.

"Your english... very good." Lily smiled.

"Xiexie, Miss. What's your name?" He asked in Chinese.

"My name is Lily. How about you?" She replied back in Chinese.

"My name is Jeffrey. My family is from Germany but I was born in the USA." He replied in fluent Chinese again.

"Your Chinese is very good. You should teach me English when we have time. My english is not too good." She tried to talk in English but he smiled, "I'll teach you English when we have time."

As they talked in Chinese, Jeffrey taught her how to have better conversation in English.

"Lily, why are you going to Germany?" Jeffrey asked.

Lily paused before she spoke.

"I... I'm going to pursue a career in medicine. It was my dream to be a doctor one day. I should improve my English. I have no problem speaking German since I took courses during college." Jeffrey nodded.

"That's a challenge. Hope you do well, after you become one. I'm going to be your first patient." He teased. Lily smiled, "I hope to be a good doctor." They smiled and laughed together.

Lily received a text message from her friend, Rachel.

"Lily, I was the one who sent Jeffrey without telling you. He's one of my best friend. Great at Chinese, English, and German. He will help you around Berlin. I already told him about the details so don't worry." Lily didn't know what to say but showed the text message to Jeffrey. He chuckled and nodded, "Haha, sorry, we didn't tell you in advance. I'm introducing myself again, Hi...my name is Jeffrey and I'm Rachel's friend." Lily laughed and nodded, "I know." They chatted more afterward and quiet down after pilot announcement.

Jeffrey and Lily sat back as the plane started to ascend. She closed her eyes and relaxed.

~

"What are you going to do in Germany?" Lily asked.

"Visiting my family and I'm going to train as a bodyguard when in Germany." Jeffrey smiled and looked at Lily. She nodded and tried to look surprised.

"That must be hard since you have to do a lot of physical activities." She said. Jeffrey nodded and shrugged, "Well, that's to be expected. You're training as a future doctor and I'm a future bodyguard." He winked at Lily and she silented smiled.

"Rachel knew you might have a hard time so she asked me to accompany you. She told me a lot about you. I won't do anything that will hurt you. I promised otherwise Rachel will slap me in the face god knows how many times." Jeffrey chuckled as he told Lily to be less tense. Lily looked at him and replied, "Rachel can do more. She's great at Taekwondo. Better be on her good side." She teased Jeffrey.

~

After several more hours, they finally arrived in Berlin Tegel Airport. One of the city's airport for international flights. When they checked out of the airport, the weather was perfect. Not too cold and not too hot.

Jeffrey and Lily took the bus and got off at their assigned destination. Jeffrey told Lily that Rachel already arranged a one bedroom apartment room in downtown Berlin.

"You will be living on the top floor and I'll be on the bottom floor." Jeffrey showed her around the apartment.

"My parents own this apartment building. It's free for you since you will be studying. I'll give you few hours to settle in. I'll show you all good places to eat afterward. Here's my phone number and this is the new card for your phone. From now on, this will be your new number." Lily thanked Jeffrey as he left the room.

"I'll see you in a few hours." She waved at him as he went down the hallway.

Lily sat on the bed which was already made for her.

"Okay Lily, from now on, this will be your new home."
