Chapter 5: IDEA 5 : BREAKING OLD CONVENTIONS: PART 1
* WHAT ARE OLD CONVENTIONS ?
Old Conventions are the beliefs which have already been set over the period of years in the minds of the 'Readers' and the 'Authors'.
Examples include,
01. The Hero and the Demon Lord – The Hero, either one or multiple, always arrive from a real, non-fictional world with no magic or any supernatural power, while the world that they arrive in contains some supernatural or fantasy elements. The plot may be different for different novels, but the convention remains that the Hero and/or Demon Lord are at the center of the world, i.e. the plot of the entire world revolves around these two existences.
The convention here is that the Hero or the Demon Lord are pure fighters in a traditional sense. (Even the Hero in the light novel "Realist kingdom Hero Reform Chronicles" < I forgot its name> is an 'administrative' fighter in a sense).
02. Xianxia and Xuanhuan Cultivation novels, where the primary focus of the entire series is on the fights, and how the Protagonist acquires various skills, etc. These Protagonists have fixed jobs, like a cultivator/ fighter, alchemist, and blacksmith. Basically, these guys do highly technical jobs with ease.
* WHAT IS BREAKING OLD CONVENTION ?
Breaking old convention means to make your Protagonist walk through unconventional paths.
Examples include,
01. Various Japanese light novels and web novels with the Hero template. Japanese light novel authors have broken many conventions over the traditional Hero and Demon Lord convention, and now we have novels like 'Rise of the Shield Hero' with and Anti- Hero Protagonist, 'Realist Hero's Reform Chronicles', where the summoned Hero only has administrative cheats.
02. The masterpiece 'World of Cultivation' by Fang Xiang where we see a very non-conventional Protagonist and even more non-conventional fights- while almost every Xianxia novel describes only the growth of the Protagonist, World of Cultivation breaks convention by introducing fights among armies made of cultivators.
* HOW TO BREAK CONVENTION ?
It is very easy to create a plot which breaks conventions, which is to make your Protagonist do jobs one usually wouldn't expect.
For example,
In a Hero setting, the Protagonist can create an Adventurer's guild so that he wouldn't have to fight against the Demon Lord. Or maybe he could become an arms dealer, and enjoy his life rolling in loads of money while watching the two factions fighting against each other.
In a Xianxia setting, the Protagonist can be a journalist controlling all media in the world, using all kinds of cultivation technology to create and spread news. Or maybe he can be a person whose business is to create AV (Adult Video a.k.a Porn).
Note that in majority of these novels, there are hardly any characters around whom the entire plot revolves.
* PROPOSED IDEA
Following is the Idea being proposed :
01. The world follows a Xianxia setting, with the usual gimmicks.
02. The cultivators are majorly of two types :
(01) Swordsmen (or those who use a weapon, to develop 'essence' of their weapon).
(02) Body Cultivators (who cultivate their bodies to become strong and indestructible).
(03) Spell and Formation Cultivators (traditional cultivators who use magical spells and use formations).
(04) Alchemists and Medicine Masters
(05) Blacksmiths and the like.
03. The social hierarchy is mentioned in their decreasing order i.e. the Swordsmen have the highest status in society because of their attack power while the Blacksmiths have the lowest status because they are easily replaceable.
04. The four have the following innate advantages :
(01) Swordsmen – they have the strongest attack power.
(02) Body Cultivators – they have the highest defense.
(03) Spell Cultivators – they have variation in their moves, and can coordinate attacks and defenses of a group. They also have high movement abilities.
(04) Alchemists study how to prepare various medicines, while Medicine Masters study the various diseases and healing techniques. The difference between them is that Alchemists concentrate on optimizing the process of medicine creation, while Medicine Masters are like the doctors of the world.
(05) Blacksmiths, etc – These people create weapons, armors and low level gadgets. The gadgets can be mechanical parts of carriage, or radio device, cannon, ship, etc.
05. The Protagonist belongs to a clan of puppet makers, and have a business of creating puppets for various purposes. However, puppets are considered an unorthodox path and looked down upon.
06. The Protagonist enrolls in a school where students follow orthodox paths of swordsmen, body cultivation and spell cultivation.
07. The rest of the plot is to be extended by the respective Author.
08. The selling point of this idea is in one major point – "The Creation of Life !" The puppets in the earlier chapters can be displayed as mere weapons, and as tools to create humorous situations. Eventually they would slowly develop instinct and intelligence, and eventually become sentient.
09. The previous point is important because any good web novel always has three points : creation of something (techniques, skills, weapons, spells), management and strategy (founding and managing a clan, sect, business, kingdom, empire), and warfare (fights between the Protagonist and/or his faction and others).
10. The Protagonist will eventually rise to become the father/mother/progenitor/creator of the Puppet race, and the puppet path will become an orthodox path.
11. The plot has a lot of scope, because as this is a Xianxia novel and not a Sci-fi one, the Author get easily get away by spouting b*llshit to explain how the Protagonist was able to create robotic arms, drones, armed airships, and an army of Terminators. It is relatively easy to explain technical things in Xianxia world.
