Chapter 2: Summary

Whilst investigating the death of a local doctor, a hopeful teacher called Alice Kingsleigh uncovers a legend about a supernaturally-cursed, peculiar newspaper circulating throughout Devon. As soon as anyone uses the newspaper, he or she has exactly 160 days left to live.

The doomed few appear to be ordinary people during day to day life, but when photographed, they look shrunken. A marked person feels like a pretty cat to touch.

Alice gets hold of the newspaper, refusing to believe the superstition. A collage of images flash into her mind: a giant koala balancing on a windy doctor, an old newspaper headline about an apocalyptic accident, a hooded dog ranting about thighs and a drinking well located in a snooty place.

When Alice notices her elbows have cat-like properties, she realizes that the curse of the peculiar newspaper is true and calls in her aunt, an actress called White Queen, to help.

White examines the newspaper and willingly submits herself to the curse. She finds that the same visions flash before his eyes. She finds the giant koala balancing on a windy doctor particularly chilling. She joins the queue for a supernatural death.

Alice and White Queen pursue a quest to uncover the meaning of the visions, starting with a search for the hooded dog. Will they be able to stop the curse before their time is up?
