Chapter 35: CHAPTER 34: DBK FASHION EMPIRE
The number of ways you can live in one lifetime is limitless, so why limit yourself? The sky is not the limit. Beyond the Universe is. Ru Lan was not riding her bike today, she drove a dark blue shiny Aston martin and the speed at which she drove through the streets was mind bogglingly awesome. She was dressed in her normal jeans and top but today's dressing made her look like the perfect definition of a mega superstar. She was wearing a sky blue slightly baggy jeans which was folded at the edges, she wore a white vintage long sleeved shirt which she tucked in at the front, a sparkling white limited edition Nike sneakers, she tied her reddish blonde hair in a messy bun, then she completed her looks by donning a round silvery dark shades and a white teddy bear shape backpack. She was not the handbag kind of girl. Though she loved heels, but she still preferred sneakers to them. She totally looked like a steal. She was beautiful and she owned it, her motto in life was looking good, equals feeling good.
She stopped her car in the parking lot of a tall building located in the business centre of city E, she looked up at the 23 storey building and gave a sigh. To her, it was a sigh of accomplishment. Been a doctor was her father's dream and she fulfilled it. Been the CEO of L&B INVESTMENT HOLDINGS is something she just felt like doing because she felt that she could, but life here at DBK is who she really was and been a fashion designer has been her dream since young and designing just happens to be one of her superpower. The thrill she feels when she sees people rocking the clothes she made was unmatched.
DBK is a high end fashion empire. Their apparels could not be compared to any other company's. Even critics have described them to be living true to their motto which is bringing fashion to life. DBK houses over 700 employees. It was a huge company having various departments and all the employees were handpicked by Ru Lan herself. She knew them all by their names. Most of them were homeless people with no jobs or future, some were from the different orphanages that her foundation usually caters for, basically, everybody working here in DBK were her family and they adored her as much as she adored them. She didn't come to the building frequently but whenever she did, she always made it a habit to order lunch for all her employees. According to outsiders, they say that the employees of DBK were not just employees they were being pampered by their bosses which has greatly contributed to the great and conducive working environment they had.
It had become a target for graduates for their internship programs and also full time work, but it remained a fact that not anyone could enter DBK just because they want to. They receive hundreds of applications whenever they advertise that they were hiring. The only reason they hired other people sometimes, is because Ru Lan felt she had to be fair to people that are truly deserving of the opportunity to work and grow in DBK. She was the epitome of an ideal boss and all her employees will agree, but they were also the only ones that knew that she was the real boss but will they ever let it slip? No Way. Although they all signed non disclosure agreements but that was not their sole reason for not revealing her identity. To many of them, she was their life line.
When Ru Lan walked into the building through the main entrance, her assistant Fiona James was already waiting for her. She smiled when she saw Fiona glaring at her and said...
I know i am late. You don't have to murder me with your eyes Fiona.
Fiona: i wouldn't dare boss. How is it that you always look more gorgeous than the last time i saw you every single time? Fiona said with a smile. Though she was Ru Lan's assistant, she was also her friend and she rarely gets to see her because of her work.
Ru Lan: i don't know, i keep wondering that myself. I guess God just decided to take pity on me and make me look more beautiful than 80% of women in the universe. She lifted her brow and smirked at her then took a twirl with both her hands raised high.
Right! How could i forget that you will always be at the top when it comes to tooting your own horn? I'm just glad you stuck with 80% and not 99.99% this time. Fiona replied sarcastically.
When she noticed the sarcasm lacing Fiona's words, she just said.. Gee Fiona, chill out. I'm not one to brag okay? And besides it's not like i'm been narcissistic at all. Its called having a high self esteem. Go check Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. Its a basic human need to love yourself and i can't help but just live the life. In fact, i think you should learn a thing or two from me okay. Ru Lan said.
Hmm! Yeah, you're totally not bragging at all. You are all about loving life and girl power. What a Role model you are. Fiona said to her.
I'm glad you know. That is a good skill to posses as a manager. Learn to recognise things that others don't easily see. Even though i'm oozing awesomeness and dripping with finesse and everyone can see it, it's still great to know that you can see it too.
By now the elevator door had dinged and opened. They had arrived at the top floor of the building which contains the CEO's office and the CEO's and Fiona's assistants who handle their day to day business. As she walked into her office, she kept receiving greetings from different staff members and she made it a part of her routine to answer them and asked about their families. It took a while before she finally entered her office.
Before she sat on her chair she removed her design book from her back pack and handed it over to Fiona. These are some of the designs I've made for next season. Take a look at them and see to them accordingly. Ru Lan said.
Yes Ma'am. Would that be all? Asked Fiona.
Yes. That will be all. Ru Lan said.
Then Fiona bowed to her and made to leave the room.
Wait! Ru Lan suddenly said and removed another design book from her back pack. This is a personal design. I made it for my partner for Big Sis Shu's wedding. She handed it over to Fiona to scan the document.
Fiona received it and when she looked at the design in the book, she was stunned. Though DBK designs both male and female wears, this was the first time she had ever seen Ru Lan personally designed a male outfit and it was stunningly beautiful. She looked at the design and looked back at Ru Lan she didn't know what to say, she was completely floored.
You designed this? She asked Ru Lan because she was finding it hard to believe that Ru Lan was letting one of her male Line design personally designed by her to see the light of day. they all knew Ru Lan was a genius, no doubt. But she always said that she had not yet seen a man who could wear her design, so she refrained from making one. Even her Uncle K's wedding suit was not designed personally by her, even when she designed clothes for her family members and her best friends that were males, she didn't do it herself. She just supervised the whole process and made one or two inputs. But this was a Mint green tuxedo. It really matched her gown for the wedding. She was the maid of honour and the tuxedo that was made for the best man could not even match this. In fact, they were worlds apart.
En! I made this last night. It's for my boyfriend. I haven't asked him if he would go yet though but i just wanted to design him a tux. I feel like he will totally represent my work just the way i want it. Ru Lan said.
Woah! Woah! Back up a sec girl, what did you just say? Fiona asked
I said i made it last night. Ru Lan replied.
No... No... Not that. Fiona said.
I feel like he can represent my....
Before she finished speaking, Fiona cut in again, not that either, i mean what you said before that.
That it is for my boyfriend? Ru Lan asked, not sure what was wrong with Fiona.
Yes that... Ahhhhh! That. Fiona screamed like a little fan girl that just found out that her idol was in her neighbourhood. You have a boyfriend? How? When? Where? I mean Who? She asked in one breath.
Stop acting like it's a big deal Fiona, it's not like this is the first time i'm having a Boyfriend. Ru Lan said.
Of course it's a big deal Daisy. This is not the first time you are having a boyfriend but its the first time you are talking about having a boyfriend with a smile on your lips and a twinkle in your eye. You're even designing a tux for him. Ahhhh! You don't have to lie, i know a girl in love when i see one, and you my dear Daisy Brianna Kelton are in love. Fiona said with heartfelt joy.
You think? Ru Lan asked her sheepishly while scratching behind her ear.
I don't think it. i know it. i have known you for a really long time and if i can't detect little things like you being in love then hasn't my time on earth been wasted then? She asked Ru Lan. Ru Lan was just smiling and didn't say anything. She knew better that anyone how in love with Jason she truly was. She just hoped that he felt the same way for her, and she hoped she could really enjoy been in a relationship this time and not mess it up like she always does.
Who is he? Fiona asked her.
Hehehe! It's a surprise, don't worry, i'm sure you'll see him very soon. Ru Lan said.
Come here, she said to Ru Lan and enveloped her in a big hug. She was older that Ru Lan with two years and when Ru Lan was brought into the family, she was the only other person she talked to, apart from her God forsaken Ex of course. So Ru Lan's birth mother made her Ru Lan's shadow. Ru Lan brought her from the North to help her manage DBK so she could focus on her profession as a doctor.
Alright! That's enough. Don't tap too much from my swag. Ru Lan said with a laugh.
Sure... sure... the young miss Kelton has spoken, everyone else must obey. I'll get this to the scanning machine and make a copy. She said and waved the book in the air.
BTW I need that before next week Wednesday Fi... Ru lan said to her.
Sure thing boss. I'll make my move now. Said Fiona and she left the office leaving Ru Lan to her work. She didn't forget to bring a bowl of assorted chocolates for the little sweet tooth glutton. That was the routine for whenever she was in the office.
Fiona was in such a good mood today. She felt like celebrating. Thank you for giving her a chance to be happy she said and placed both of her palms together in front of her in a prayer pose.
