Chapter 54: Day 53

I rebelled. I said goodbye to my mom Christina, who had time to drop me off and I waved like everything was normal.

Even though the first day I rebelled I felt a tightness in my chest. When I told Kyle about the tightness in my chest, he stared at me and my chest before saying, "It must be heartburn instead of guilt, Renata. Don't overthink it."

In turn, I gave him his birthday card for his 53rd birthday.

"Your daughter is going to be 18. She's only been arrested once, has never been pregnant despite her colorful dating history, and has been accepted to a good community college. Personally, you could be prouder but you don't want to push your luck." Kyle smirked as he closed his Birthday card. "I'm super proud of my daughter."

"Oh, how so?"

"Because Persephone and Harley are both true to themselves. They don't listen to everything I, their father, have to say and that means they're individuals." Kyle's smug smile made me frown.

"Or they're monkeys game for anarchy," I replied. "Do you want them to start a revolution or something?"

Kyle raised his brow as he pointedly told me, "The generations worth talking about started revolutions."

"Oh, not necessarily. I think there's much to be thankful for Generation X."

"In regards to hot soap opera stars and the creation of early pop and metal rock I couldn't agree more. However, Generation X is better known for reaping what their parents Baby Boomers, have sown." Kyle happily sighed as he finished making his point and just stared at me. "I'm glad you came back by the way, grasshopper."

"You have an answer for everything don't you?" I asked him. "And an unlimited box of nicknames... I'll think up a good one for you."

"Oh Renata, I thought you never would," said Kyle as he placed a hand delicately on his heart and genuinely smiled, making my heart jump.

Kyle smirked as he sees how I decorated the card for his fifty-fourth birthday. "Dice and I guess a green felt poker table? You're drawings always don't amaze me, Renata."

"Read the card, killjoy," I replied with a smirk.

"Killjoy, hmm...how long did it take for you to come up with that one?" I whacked Kyle's shoulder hard. It still didn't stop him from adding, "That long, huh?"

I crossed my arms across my chest, and narrowed my eyes at him. "Somebody's a mood."

"You sure the mood isn't you, hon?" he asked me as he pulled out a candy bar from his side drawer. "Here, have it. The nurses keep on getting the rest of us patients treats and trinkets and well...at the rate they're giving them to me I won't be able to finish them all before I kick the bucket."

I grab the candy bar and put it in my backpack. "I didn't know auditions for Al Capone is taking place."

"Flattering; well if I'm Al Capone then you're the Queen of the Crime Underworld."

"What makes you think I can be?"

"Seriously, Renata?" Kyle placed a hand to his chest as if he's been stabbed. "I'm not surprised your lovely smile alone can render a man mortally wounded."

Laughing, I sit down on the edge of the bed. "You're my lover, of course you'd say that."

Kyle shook his head as he said, "You'll see that I'm right, Renata. Now, onto the next order of business." He flips his birthday card open. "With both kids out of the house, you and your wife take a well deserved vacation to Las Vegas where you win big on the slot machines."

I lean towards him with both of my hands clasped. "Well?"

"Well, I like that we won big on the slot machines. However, I know I'm going to spend my cut on you, Renata." I whack his shoulder with the back of my hand.

"And if I'm not agreed?" I asked him.

"Too bad. The lingerie is non-refundable."

"You're terrible!" I replied trying to sound outraged but feeling like I've failed miserably. I'm just thankful Kyle had the decency to look partially guilty about his words.
